my ex rolled with an expired sticker for 3 years, i think you'll be okay for a few days

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

A buddy of mine in college got his car towed and impounded for an expired ticket, so you know... roll the dice I guess.

well, this may not be the best time to test them. the winter parking ban starts at 3 a.m. (i think?) so the cops and tow trucks will be out in force tonight.

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Shiiiiit.

nick, on the way to work i started listening to that recent seven second delay where they rebroadcast a show from '93, it's pretty f'n funny

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I have the same birthday as Bo Jackson, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, Billy Idol and Ben Stiller.

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a good 7 Second Delay where they go back and forth playing 5 second clips from their iPods on random, and have callers vote on which person's song was better.

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Happy birthday Stingy. :)

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks!

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

do you think third eye blind will play semi-charmed life at the obama show? has some questionable lyrics.

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

they fucking better for $500 a ticket

n/a, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

c@n@st@ should cover 'semi-charmed life' before 3EB gets on stage. cockblock

xpost lol

i'd pay $500 to never hear 3rd eye blind again.

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I feel bad for a lot of 90s one hit wonder bands. If they never had a hit, people might think they were a decent local pop band that's cool for sticking it out. Now it's like, Better Than Ezra, wtf, why haven't they given up yet?

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw them at BLOCKBUSTERROCKFEST (1997?)!

KitCat, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

One time I saw this girl do Jumper at karaoke. It was a solid performance. She also complimented me on my performance of Runaway Train. The songs are somewhat similar thematically, I guess.

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

jaymc, that's really exciting about the show, i'm sorry you'll be partying with obama instead of me, though!

also, where is the aragon ballroom on the hierarchy of venues in chicago?

j/v/c-- i know you know this, but you need to do something about your manager. i suffered through a year with a really bad, incompetent manager who was borderline abusive by the end of it, and certainly played fucked up mind games just like the whole "i don't care if everyone else is going out early, i said you can't, so you can't" you describe above. i started writing down each incident with dates, and also writing down other shady behavior by her (she took a LOT of sick days, like at least 1 a week), and eventually got so pissed i was ready to walk out, burst into tears at my other job because of a nasty email from her. went in to the director and said i was either going to have to leave or stop working for her, and you know what? he found me another manager-- one i didn't even know was coming back to the organization, so thought wasn't an option. she was awesome and we even hang out outside work. the end.

colette, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

my goal in my musical career is to be a one-hit wonder. there's something so pure about it. like they have one awesome song. and it was so awesome they could never do better.

n/a, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

i narrowly missed having to see hootie play at the gore/lieberman rally in 2000. (as in, i stood outside the gates until they finished on principle)

colette, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

actually a lot of my favorite pop songs are one-hits. "I Touch Myself," "Groove is in the Heart," "Jesse's Girl," etc. (don't be pedantic and point out some #32 follow-up "hit" these bands had).

n/a, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:04 (sixteen years ago) link

aragon is a huge ballroom, holds probably 2,500? i saw the pixies there and psoi open for wilco (left after psoi because it was roughly 98 degrees outside and SO MUCH WORSE inside).

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

i've only seen pixies at aragon. i guess it's pretty good for a larger venue? i got claustrophobic but shit was sold out obviously.

n/a, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

my exi rolled with an expired sticker for 3 years

pls tell 3rd eye blind guy that he had mad acting skillz in that one lifetime movie with the "girl" from "just one of the guys."

he played a ne'er-do-well boyfriend who gets his just desserts!

La Lechera, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Didn't just about everyone on this thread go to one of those Pixies shows? I am pretty sure we lined up that way once before. I went, too.

dan m, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

is aragon the one by the green mill?

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:07 (sixteen years ago) link

why would i have gone to see the pixies? :)

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

i went

La Lechera, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

back to class bye bye

La Lechera, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

huh. the random dude i ran into from high school at the caribou/battles concert is apparently a big deal then, they've got 3 dates there and one of them t0rt0ise is opening for them. which seems a little weird to me!

colette, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

what band is he in?

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

oh nevermind, i see. :> one night, they were playing at the aragon and we were playing at the green mill, and i had a hilarious conversation with a drugged-up hippy girl who had wandered in afterwards. she was going on about their 20 min guitar solos and how they just, like, make it up, maaan!

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

(that's crazy that t0rt01se is opening!)

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Never been to the Aragon. I think it's probably the biggest non-arena venue in Chicago. Q101 does their annual festival there. Bands like the White Stripes, the Strokes, and the Flaming Lips are typical, along with a lot of huge Spanish-language bands.

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait, Colette, you know someone in U|\/|p|-|rey's McG33??

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't you mean Umphr3y's McG33?

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I saw Pixies at Lollapalooza that year, that was enough for me. I've only seen a few shows at the Riv (Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Belle and Sebastian, Kraftwerk), but there have seriously been no shows that I've wanted to see at the Aragon, and from what I understand, it's a pretty terrible place to see a show, anyway (bad acoustics, etc.). I don't really like big shows.

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

them and tortoise is kind of a weird pairing, but i guess tortoise DO like to jam.

stingy, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

xp Yeah, guess I should've googleproofed that.

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:19 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean, i've never heard of this band, have you, jordan? and three nights at the aragon? and t0rt01se opening for them? he probably thought he was going to really impress me when he told me what his band was, i just assumed it was some college band that decided to move to chicago.

xpost-- yeah, please googleproof, i really don't want him to stumble on this. i've edited my above post just in case. i went to high school with the bassist. do you know my last name? he's sta i'm ste, which in a school as small as mine meant lockers next to each other and sitting next to each other in every class for 4 years. he recognized me at that show and i looked at him and thought "i have no idea who that is" which is weird because he looked pretty much exactly the same as high school.

xxp-- we saw the pixies at alexandra palace in london-- a venue that's so big they put a carnival INSIDE. i was so bored that we left early. and got lost on the way home, so spent several hours on random busses.

colette, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

but i guess tortoise DO like to jam.

They do? I don't think Tortoise would describe themselves as a jam band, but jam-band kids seem to like them quite a bit. When I saw them at the Abbey a few years ago, there was some be-dreaded hacky-sack dude bopping around in the middle of the room. And they play Bonnaroo pretty much every year, too.

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:20 (sixteen years ago) link

actually a lot of my favorite pop songs are one-hits. "I Touch Myself," "Groove is in the Heart," "Jesse's Girl," etc. (don't be pedantic and point out some #32 follow-up "hit" these bands had).

rick springfield had 4 other top 10 hits and a slew of other top 20's. he also put out a record of bubblegum pop in '74 or so for a kids show that is one of my favorite records of all time.

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:21 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i've heard of them, they are a college jam band staple. they seem to be playing all the time everywhere (never actually heard them, btw).

xpost, jaymc otm, t0rtoise is not noodly at all, but i can see why they get that crossover crowd

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

actually, only 3 were top 20, but a slew of top 25!

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean, i've never heard of this band, have you, jordan? and three nights at the aragon?

That's the thing about jam bands. If you're not into the scene, there's no reason for you to ever hear about them at all, and then suddenly String Cheese Incident or O.A.R. is selling out three straight shows at the House of Blues or whatever.

jaymc, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:23 (sixteen years ago) link

my pixies experience, in hindsight was the worst night of my life. didn't know it 'til months later though. i've never felt so stupid in my life.

chicago kevin, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

yup, because it's not like they're on the radio or anything. it's insidious.

Jordan, Friday, 30 November 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

looks like ilx is shutting down IMINENTLY
