Seems like the stuff being put out under the "Nataly Dawn" name is way, way better than Pomplemousse? I mean it's not exactly my bag, but the songwriting and production are v good. Like the song above (Dance) -- great bass and drum parts, really nice sound, cool chord progression, I think the only thing I don't really like about it is her indie cliche voice.

Dropping the goofiness was a good idea though.

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but 1:25 into it she still hasn't looked at the camera, which is a vast improvement in and of itself.

Singer/songwriter Nataly Dawn, one half of the duo Pomplamoose, releases her solo album How I Knew Her on Nonesuch Records on February 12. Even with two weeks to go before then, the critical praise has begun pouring in from the UK, including BBC Music, and earning four star reviews from Mojo, the Daily Telegraph, and Independent on Sunday.

Mojo gives the album four stars as well. Dawn's "echoey swamp sound," writes Mojo's Phil Sutcliffe, "emcompassing bottle neck guitars and cellos recalls the friendly/eerie seductions of Bobbie Gentry or Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball." Did someone make a recent post involving something like "Pomplamousse teaming up with some other band to create the Voltron of horrible music"? I thought I read a post like that in the last 12 hours, but maybe it was just an ilx dream.

I feel like it would be Amanda Palmer if so. Don't know if I heard that somewhere or it just makes sense.

A guy goes into the woods hunting for a bear. When he is deep in the woods he feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns to see an enormous grizzly towering above him. Before he can fire, the beast rips the rifle out of his hands and proceeds to sodomize him.

Mortified, he retreats to his cabin, arms himself with a double-barreled shotgun, and races back into the woods to find and kill his furry assailant. But once again, the bear sneaks up behind him, pulls the weapon from his hands and has his lusty way with him.

Undeterred, the guy equips himself with a machine gun and treks back into the woods where he is again ambushed, disarmed and defiled by the bear.

Now, apoplectic with moral outrage, he flies to a third world country where he buys a heat-seeking, shoulder-launched, nuclear-tipped rocket from an international arms dealer.
Convinced he finally has the upper hand, he returns to the woods, tracks the bear to his lair and patiently waits to vaporize him. And yes, again, the bear surprises, disarms and sexually assaults him.

But this time, before the guy can run off to acquire more lethal armaments, the bear enfolds him in his massive arms and says, "You don't really come out here to hunt, do ya?"

tv critic I follow on twitter saw ben folds last week and was like "opener nataly dawn was great too!" and I thought uh oh.....it begins.

That Dance is song is less annoying than Pomplamoose I guess, but mentioning her little indie-squeak of a voice in the same sentence as Emmylou Harris is to me just.... no.

LYDEN: Nataly Dawn is taking on some pretty heady topics on the record, including many references to faith and her struggles with it, despite growing up with parents who served as missionaries.

DAWN: My father was a pastor and later on a theology professor, and my mother was always in charge of the music at church. And my parents were very much into a lot of gospel music. My mom was just a huge fan of the great old hymns. And I have to say they're still deeply ingrained in my subconscious. It's very hard for me to write things that don't sound just a little bit like a hymn.

(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)

DAWN: (Singing) Maybe they will because you know what they say when there's a gun to your head, is there nobody praying (unintelligible) because we're all just the same, we're all just the same. La di da.

LYDEN: There are a lot of references to faith on "How I Knew Her." Was that intentional?

DAWN: It was intentional in that it's what I've been thinking a lot about. The album is about relationships, and particularly about relationships with the women in my life who've mattered the most to me. And all of those women have had deep faith as a big part of their identity. And I definitely have ended up struggling with a lot of what I believe and what I was brought up with through the investigation of these relationships with the women who are closest to me in my life.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STILL A BELIEVER")

DAWN: (Singing) Grandma says I'm going to hell 'cause I met a boy and we make rock music. And the trouble is I know she means well. If I'm misbehaving, it's (unintelligible) and she says life is a test...

LYDEN: Your grandmother, I have to ask you about her, here in this song, "Still a Believer," sounds a little strict. Grandma says I'm going to hell because I met a boy and we make rock music and the trouble is I know she means well. She was probably quite accustomed to you singing church music. Maybe this was too difficult to stretch.

DAWN: I think a lot of people in my family have trouble with the fact that I have strayed from my beliefs, and in particular with the fact that I'm not married and I've been living with my boyfriend, you know, who I've been in a relationship with for the past six and a half years. And I think it's quite difficult for them to deal with the fact that I still claim to have some sort of faith, but that it's not really in line with my very strict Christian heritage.

DAWN: (Singing) And I said I'm still a believer...
