Yes, it's true folks. Ivory and I are splitting up. It's really sad. I'm really sad. I think you may have been able to tell in some recent songs. It's going to be a hard road ahead for me, but I know that this is the right decision and that eventually we'll both be happier in the end.

F Gm
I want to have kids
F Am
And I really don't
F Gm C
I wish that she would someday
Dm C
But I really won't F Bb
So we've got to break up
Dm C
It's the only way
Cause I will resent her
And that's not fair
Bb
We still care about each other
C
But this train has stopped
Dm C
We just needed you to know F
That we've got to break up

And breaking up's a mess
So please be there for us
You don't have to choose
Though it'll be awkward, yes
Invite us to your parties
We will work it out
Don't feel weird
We love all of you
After 5 whole years
By each other's side
There are just somethings
No relationship can survive

I wanna have babies
I don't wanna

I wanna have babies
I don't wanna have babies
Couple of babies
I don't want to have any
Couple of babies
no

I mean, how are you going to record and film a video for a jaunty song where you are begging your soon-to-be-ex to procreate with you, and then she has a bari clarinet solo

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Thursday, 6 December 2012 22:29 (eleven years ago) link

baritone clarinet is the most mournful of the reed instruments IMO

This is what happens when parents praise everything their kids do and worry whether their self-esteem is high enough. This guy has written, recorded, and uploaded a half-arsed, cringey, oversharing, bland, amateurish song a day for 1435 days. What happened to always leaving them wanting more? What happened to learning how to play your damn bass clarinet? It's like something a teenage kid would play to themselves on their first guitar in their room in a sulk and then hope nobody overheard.

just having been in whatever middling indie rock bands

i think the worst thing about this "youtube band" phenomenon is that i think it's really important for ppl to perform live shows before they record anything because it's really important to look into that crowd's bored eyes and watch them shuffle off to go smoke and get beers and understand how...bad...your...songs...are

Seems like the stuff being put out under the "Nataly Dawn" name is way, way better than Pomplemousse? I mean it's not exactly my bag, but the songwriting and production are v good. Like the song above (Dance) -- great bass and drum parts, really nice sound, cool chord progression, I think the only thing I don't really like about it is her indie cliche voice.

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Sunday, 20 January 2013 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

Dropping the goofiness was a good idea though.

space phwoar (Hurting 2), Sunday, 20 January 2013 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but 1:25 into it she still hasn't looked at the camera, which is a vast improvement in and of itself.

Singer/songwriter Nataly Dawn, one half of the duo Pomplamoose, releases her solo album How I Knew Her on Nonesuch Records on February 12. Even with two weeks to go before then, the critical praise has begun pouring in from the UK, including BBC Music, and earning four star reviews from Mojo, the Daily Telegraph, and Independent on Sunday.

Nataly Dawn "delivers a seductive and singular solo album," says BBC Music of How I Knew Her. "Overall it’s the sound of a woman brimming with ideas as she seizes her moment," writes BBC reviewer John Aizlewood. "She nods to Mary Margaret O’Hara’s way with oscillation, Kate Havnevik’s knack for painting an enigmatic picture and Regina Spektor’s yen for a winning melody."

Aizlewood recommends repeated listens, recognizing it as an album "to slow-drip its way to adoration. Dawn has the intelligence to sway the cognoscenti, the wide-eyed charm to seduce the masses, and an other-worldliness that ensures that, for all those she embraces, nobody sounds quite like her."

Read the complete review at bbc.co.uk.

The Independent on Sunday and the Daily Telegraph give the album four stars, with the latter calling it "delightful." The Telegraph concludes: "Delicate and playful, Dawn balances childlike wonder with sly wit and subtle emotion, switching from deadpan folky narratives to archaic country rocking with an ease reminiscent of such Americana greats as Natalie Merchant and Kate McGarrigle."

Mojo gives the album four stars as well. Dawn's "echoey swamp sound," writes Mojo's Phil Sutcliffe, "emcompassing bottle neck guitars and cellos recalls the friendly/eerie seductions of Bobbie Gentry or Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball."
