You are pretty recognizable! I'd probably be in shock if it was a random St3vie sighting

Not close to the same thing, but part of my job is formatting print publications into a web format so they look nice when you read them online.

I put together this slideshow about some family who was running a marathon. They struck me because the husband was Asian and the wife was white, which meant her name was some ungodly combination like Tammy Lou Wu or something. Their three kids were cute.

Hours later, I'm picking up my kids at daycare. The elevator doors open and out - steps - the Wu Family. (Enter: the Wu Clan, I'll save you the time.)

It was just really weird to recognize someone who wasn't famous.

And then there was the time that I flew to Denver, stood outside of homo II's house for three hours, and then flew back, but I've never told anyone about that.

xxp - Well, it's that, yeah, but it's also that she came up to you with a pic and said, "Is this you?!" That's just bizarro behavior tbh. Would have been a lot less weird if she'd just asked if you were on ILX, I think.

yeah i mean how did you react? did she just skulk off immediately?

In my very early days of ilx, I was reading an old thread at work and the last post was by fritz wollner. A moment later I served a customer and when he gave me his credit card to pay, I saw his name was fritz wollner. I doubt it was actually the same guy but it was still super weird.

My irl bff confessed to me a couple months ago that he's a lurker (HI K-MAC!) even though I suspected it for a long time. Occasionally he would just know things that I knew I hadn't told him or he'd bring up something I'd just talked about on ILX and was too much of a coincidence. I can't remember the actual example but somehow I caught him one day and he had to finally admit it.

This morning he drove me to work and as I was getting out of the car he said, "Hey, are you getting a haircut tonight?" and I was like "Wait, what? How did you know that?" The look of shame on his face as he muttered "Uh, ILX" was pretty priceless.

ive seen ilxors a couple of times at shows and always felt incredibly embarrassed by even the idea of going up to someone and telling them i know them from the internet

f (Lamp), Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

we were overdue for a new consonant-mac.

estela, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

tbh I saw that guy commenting on ENBB's facebook page in a way that seemed to be versed with our style of conversation and assumed he was an ilxor I didn't know

mh, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

lol I would totally go up to someone I knew from the internet. I mean maybe not if I were a luker but if I thought I saw one of you guys somewhere there's no way I wouldn't say hi.

bill paxman (darraghmac), Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link

speaking of lurkers and forgetting about them: the other week i was talking to my sister about the young people and their constant living online and how when they age into adults it's going to be into a world where all the embarrassing shit they do as kids that gets recorded forever on the internet maybe won't seem like such a big deal because it's going to be that way for everyone.

and i said, seeing as how i am looking for a new job outside of "arts journalism," where you can pretty much be a perverted d-bag lunatic drug addict and still get work if you can write and have connections, sometimes (usually) even if you can't write, i said something like, you know, i've said some pretty fucked up/weird/potentially controversial things in reviews/pieces/essays/articles over the years, it'd be pretty easy for some potential employer to google me and see something that rubs him/her the wrong way, politically or socially or whatever, and say that's that.

then she said something to the effect of "i'd probably be more worried about all the crazy bullshit you've posted to ilx over the years."

my heart kinda dropped through my stomach for multiple reasons at that moment.

one of these days enbb will realise her irl friend "k-mac" is none other than roberto spiralli wearing an elaborate disguise.

but did you at one point attend a mountain goats show at sonar, this is killing me

slam dunk, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

yeah strongo i've posted stuff to ilx i wouldnt necessarily want my closest to read, but it'd be easy for them to be doing so right now i guess..

actual answer to earlier question: i have 'turned on' several ppl to ilx accidentally ("what do you keep looking at?") and i know they lurk still and if i can do it so can thousands of others

slam dunk, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

what about the deep lurkers who don't even know they're lurking

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

anyway, yes dude, i believe i was at a mountain goats show at sonar in late 2007, after i moved but before i moved back.

What up, K-Mac. How was life at F0rdham?

pplains, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

K-Mac and Omar Little were friends at FU and almost lived together but then Omar Little transferred schools. I know this because OL recognized him from FU and one day msg'd me and said, "So, uh, I think I know your friend." True story.

ILX and real life weird collision shit. The other one of that I've had is that I briefly lived with a girl when I first moved here to Boston who, as it turns out, JJJusten dated irl in MN.
