tx Tim!

in e.g. house, their use was spread out a bit more and the genre was never at any point as dependent on them

this is true of uk garage but not deep/non-mersh house: before 2012 it was just a here and there thing, now almost every other hip dh release has a Brandy or an Aaliyah vocal sample... as i said i don't mind it so far, but i sure as hell won't feel insatied when it's all over soon

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

Getting Me Down did have a weird sense of swing, its nowhere near as dependent on 2-step revivalism or Burial mimicry as a lot of that music was.

Felt new, and I think he's proven that he's not a one trick pony at this point.

what about labels like bnr trax and marble players? doesn't anybody else like that stuff?

Is that little melody running through "Maybe Tonight" (that comes in at around 3:20 on the Instrumental version) an intentional borrowing from Linda Rondstadt's "You're No Good"? I mean, it's not exact, but it kind of jumps out at me.

thanks to everyone who recommended that terrence dixon record, it is something

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 04:49 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I've meant to get around to it for a while. Not really sure to what to make of it so far.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

it's definitely a dense listen, but in the right setting or with the right mindset it is p striking

all i heard was like lush ominous melancholy iirc broadly speaking

agree totally, think this discussion was had at the time about talabot. haven't played it since the week it came out, i'm finding that sound, as i hear more of it, a bit emotionally overbearing at the expense of beats or complexity.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 09:48 (eleven years ago) link

Going back to Tim's point - it's kind of weird because dance sounds are all over the charts and commercial dance has completely eaten pop, R&B and to an extent rap. But garden variety commercial dance is kind of in a pop-that-isn't-that-popular holding pattern at the moment, and yr standard issue Rihanna or Flo Rida bangers fulfil that High Street club function in more or less the same way anyway.

ILM in general seems to acknowledge commercial dance more when the underground and the high street are closer together (as they were broadly between 1999 and 2002), and they've miles apart for the last few years. They're getting a bit closer together now, mind.

It's kinda difficult to judge though because ILM was much smaller and more dilettantish in the time period I'm talking about.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:10 (eleven years ago) link

And of course the dance press in general has mad form for looking the other way when things actually become popular, look at FACT trying really hard to pretend that Katy B's album didn't exist last year.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:11 (eleven years ago) link

was quite shocked to see that Disclosure track had done so well in the charts recently

cock chirea -

Really interesting list thanks, glad to see some d&b here. Those tracks would have completely blown my mind 10 years ago, and it seems like d&b is finally doing now what we hoped it was capable of, back then, although it may be too late for anyone to notice now. No mention of Rockwell's Childhood Memories though? Like a couple of the songs you mention, it does almost seem to break the d&b mold.

The other big trend in d&b this year was veteran artists making the crossover to slower tempos and four to the floor beats. Attempts like Photek's tend to leave me with the feeling that d&b artists tend to burn out young and should probably retire at 25 in general, but then again Boddika and Trevino have managed to impress me, and now I even hear Doc Scott mention that he's been working on some house tracks.

Was this also the year juke was supposed to blow up, or was that last year?

viborg, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm surprised not to see any love for Monolake - Ghosts, it's a good'un. Definitely a winner for the folks on the board mourning the loss of sound design.

not heard his recent stuff but Photek's always done slow stuff well and his house track with Robert Owens from like 12 years ago is a total jam

nashwan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

I really liked the Solaris album, but Photek's recent music is sort of, well, not my thing.

i think i'll have to add terrence dixon's "from the far future" to my list

the late great, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

is there a thread for mixes of the year or is that just going in here

max, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

Favorite mixes of 2012, fuck ?

Tome Cruise (Matt P), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

in here I think, a few people have listed them

I don't think I heard any commercial mixes at all this year, it was more like see a link to something on twitter, listen to it on soundcloud, like it, forget to ever go back to it when I see another link on twitter to something different the next day

heard a bunch of good stuff that way but nothing I listened to over and over ...

xpost oh well there ya go

dmr, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:08 (eleven years ago) link

this might be a lame addition I dunno but I really like a lot of the tracks off debruit's from the horizon

that fred judd electonics without tears reissue is really great if you're interested in history or whatever, it's got like one really good song song on it imo but all the tracks where he's just talking about sound manipulation or w/e are so great

this is technically not 2012 because I guess all or most of the singles were in 2011 or something, but I would also add the shangaan shake comp

sorry for posting all post by post, this'll be my last one for now, heard about this thru ilm, can't believe I forgot it, but the Nhk'koyxen Dance Classics album is easily my fave electronic release this yr

disappointed to see Funky fizzle out this year, but Jackin and the new UKG stuff has taken its place quite nicely. I'm also fascinated by how the new UKG stuff both sounds a lot like and deviates significantly from the older stuff.

sorry for the long list, it was a good year.

seems like inspector norse came out a decade ago idk why

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

it came out in January so yeah it's been out a while, and was around on Youtube earlier than that

Psychemagik - Dancehall Days (Legwarmer Remix) -- Not sure if this is 2012 or 2011

the official version is 2012 I think, they had it on their soundcloud way before that though. (I only heard it this year, it's cool)

I must have missed that Tensnake track everyone's listing (Mainline), have to check that out. I'm a fan.

dmr, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:58 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it was a bit rubbish. His remixes of Lauer and Sugardaddy from this year are excellent though

Number None, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'm surprised anyone listed it.. the reaction in the Tensnake thread seemed pretty negative.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

I liked the Sugardaddy one

dmr, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

putting anything mentioned here and on spotify in max's playlist. up to the anephric project's list, probably do more tonite. missing lots of the jackin tracks.

the "mainline" dub is fucking sublime, the original is too much fetishist nostalgia for me, although it's not bad
