i get and understand the "Flo Jam" criticism but still feel that it was a better vessel for an Aliyaah sample than most with its creeping nocturnal pitch dark feel

love even more Ramon Tapia & Sandy Huner's "Slick" featuring a screwed "Got to Give It Up" sample though i don't expect anyone to co-sign, chugging workaday tech-house is not exactly big round these parts (not that it gets much respect elsewhere either!)

have to do a bunch of genre lists for my paper and i'm totally out of my depth w/ doing a top 10 dance tracks list -- props to anyone who can point me out to an easy way to sample a lot of stuff quickly (like a spotify playlist or something), otherwise i will prob turn in a list that's all "Gangnam Style" and Skrillex

blawan was late as shit too anyway

eh, there's no way Blawan can claim firsties, but at the time "Getting Me Down" dropped, it still felt like there were many ways to do something like that and make it fresh, but that time has passed. at any rate, it helped that he had a much more distinctive rhythmic approach to support it than these house tracks we're talking about here.

one cool thing about the deep house-assisted finalization of the tasteful r&b canon is that Ashanti got in too it seems

X-post to Some Dude, there's a house/techno bobbins spotify list if that's the kind of thing your looking for.

I liked some Disclosure and Eats Everything. Mostly I just check out things on the UKG interzone bubbler thread. I am not one of you.

I don't think agreement is a requirement to be on someone's jock. It's more about the presumed familiarity, I'd say.

My sense is that, for some people post-dubstep's belated discovery of R&B samples felt fresh, and for some people it was like "duh, took you long enough to work that out, it's been a thing everywhere else forver", and for the people in the first camp, by the beginning of 2012 it was like "enough already for this trick that will forever and always be associated with 2010 in my head" and for people in the second camp it was like "well objecting to this wouldn't be too different to objecting to divas or kickdrums, so..."

Tim F, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 02:05 (eleven years ago) link

I think that post Dubstep mostly came to the RnB sampling by way of rediscovering its roots in 2step.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoeB82x5yrc

Of course if you were listening to 2step the whole time, like you were Tim, this must have been a painfully slow process.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 02:14 (eleven years ago) link

such a gorgeous ear for melody on that album

Yeah, maybe it's just that being very invested in post-dubstep at that time, it seemed like EVERYONE in that genre was using r&b samples like that and it was cool for a while but then reached a breaking point, while in e.g. house, their use was spread out a bit more and the genre was never at any point as dependent on them, which created less of an opportunity for burnout? I still think that "Getting Me Down" had a weird sense of swing that set it apart even from other post-dubstep tho.

tx Tim!

in e.g. house, their use was spread out a bit more and the genre was never at any point as dependent on them

this is true of uk garage but not deep/non-mersh house: before 2012 it was just a here and there thing, now almost every other hip dh release has a Brandy or an Aaliyah vocal sample... as i said i don't mind it so far, but i sure as hell won't feel insatied when it's all over soon

Mind Taker, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 03:01 (eleven years ago) link

Getting Me Down did have a weird sense of swing, its nowhere near as dependent on 2-step revivalism or Burial mimicry as a lot of that music was.

Felt new, and I think he's proven that he's not a one trick pony at this point.

Is that little melody running through "Maybe Tonight" (that comes in at around 3:20 on the Instrumental version) an intentional borrowing from Linda Rondstadt's "You're No Good"? I mean, it's not exact, but it kind of jumps out at me.

all i heard was like lush ominous melancholy iirc broadly speaking

agree totally, think this discussion was had at the time about talabot. haven't played it since the week it came out, i'm finding that sound, as i hear more of it, a bit emotionally overbearing at the expense of beats or complexity.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 09:48 (eleven years ago) link

Going back to Tim's point - it's kind of weird because dance sounds are all over the charts and commercial dance has completely eaten pop, R&B and to an extent rap. But garden variety commercial dance is kind of in a pop-that-isn't-that-popular holding pattern at the moment, and yr standard issue Rihanna or Flo Rida bangers fulfil that High Street club function in more or less the same way anyway.

ILM in general seems to acknowledge commercial dance more when the underground and the high street are closer together (as they were broadly between 1999 and 2002), and they've miles apart for the last few years. They're getting a bit closer together now, mind.

It's kinda difficult to judge though because ILM was much smaller and more dilettantish in the time period I'm talking about.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 10:10 (eleven years ago) link

And of course the dance press in general has mad form for looking the other way when things actually become popular, look at FACT trying really hard to pretend that Katy B's album didn't exist last year.

cock chirea -

Really interesting list thanks, glad to see some d&b here. Those tracks would have completely blown my mind 10 years ago, and it seems like d&b is finally doing now what we hoped it was capable of, back then, although it may be too late for anyone to notice now. No mention of Rockwell's Childhood Memories though? Like a couple of the songs you mention, it does almost seem to break the d&b mold.

The other big trend in d&b this year was veteran artists making the crossover to slower tempos and four to the floor beats. Attempts like Photek's tend to leave me with the feeling that d&b artists tend to burn out young and should probably retire at 25 in general, but then again Boddika and Trevino have managed to impress me, and now I even hear Doc Scott mention that he's been working on some house tracks.

Was this also the year juke was supposed to blow up, or was that last year?

viborg, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 14:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm surprised not to see any love for Monolake - Ghosts, it's a good'un. Definitely a winner for the folks on the board mourning the loss of sound design.

not heard his recent stuff but Photek's always done slow stuff well and his house track with Robert Owens from like 12 years ago is a total jam

I really liked the Solaris album, but Photek's recent music is sort of, well, not my thing.
