But am I the only person who thinks it's amazing that Norman Cook was in The Housemartins (and Beats International; and The Mighty Dub Katz; and...) before he was Fatboy Slim? Even when "The Rockafeller Skank" hit, no one seemed to think it was a big deal.

I apologize for the brief answer before, but you have to consider Pop music in 2008 is too far away from what pop music was in the 60's. I just don't see Harpsichordes working on pop nowadays, perhaps in some sort of ironic hip-hop summer hit but I really don't see it working as a common tool in the studio.

But whatever the soundtrack, both songs possess a sexual subterfuge exemplified by a line in the 1996 movie Independence Day: “This could be our last night on Earth. You don’t want to die a virgin, do you?”

Do you know I heard a rap song that sampled the first guitar part of "This Charming Man" on this airplane I was on today...it was in someone's headphones. It tortured me to hear the first part of Marr's guitar line over and over and over against my will and without being able to hear the SECOND part and then some asshole rapped over it. Disgusting. What a way to sample a song and ruin the whole fucking thing.

nothing more enlightening than describing a music message board on the internet as "slightly fascist"
actually in my personal experience the younger folks I know are by and large not that into new music (which I find rather perplexing). A general survey of anecdotal evidence:- a woman in her early 20s who, when we sat down to play some songs together, all she knew/wanted to play was Ani DiFranco and Bonnie Raitt. (Annie DiFranco was old and lame 15 years ago when *I* was in college!)- another woman in her early 20s who's predominatly interested in old-timey bluegrass stuff, the Carter Family, etc.- my 18 yo cousin who told me all new music sucks (particularly the Dave Matthews Band, which is what all his fellow college students are into) and spent most of his time while we were visiting ripping old funk/soul and 70s rock stuff off of my hard drive

I was reminded of how much I love her songwriting recently when I discovered that Fearless, Love Story and Change (that Olympic Song) have all been released so far off the new album. Fearless is by far my favourite, esp. in because of its lyrical specificity, which is always one of the strongest things about Taylor's work. (hands through your hair, absent-mindedly making me want you, dancing in the parking lot, in a storm in her best dress, fearless) Love Story throws in some fairy-tale Romeo/Juliet stuff but is also quite good.
I'm worried that she might fall into the trap of hewing too closely to a formula that admittedly works really FUCKING well. I don't see her fucking it up, though. In my Taylor binge this week, I downloaded the two post-album EPs which are uneven, but Christmases When You Were Mine and I Heart ? are both delightful and point in interesting directions for her (achingly gorgeous christmas songs and bluesy organ-drenched mandolin pop?).
No matter how the rest of the album is, Fearless's breezy anthemic whatever will be gracing my headphones on repeat for a while.
