Mum emailed me some old Christmas photos for a project I'm doing, when I saw this one I teared up.

Taken at Christmas, circa 1980
Grandma, my baby sister, and my two cousins, and me in the front in the red dress.

my Grandma died in 1990, I loved her so much. I haven't seen my two cousins since I left Australia, we were really close back then.

bottom left: 84ish beardy dad, my sister and me with the giant beanbag snake Mum made for us for Christmas. Dad wrestled us in that thing ALL the time. so fun.
bottom right: 1980ish me and my new doll Suzy, handmade by my crafty mum. As you can tell by my face, Suzy was AWESOME.

This might be my favorite thread on ILX. At least one of them!

I am pictured in both of these shots with women who are not my mother and other kids who are not my siblings (I don't have any idea who any of them are tbh, the women or the children. I only recognize myself.)

everyone is adorable itt -- honestly i love looking at other people's childhood photos almost as much as i like (immodestly) looking at my own. so much information in one tiny glimpse! i am a sentimental fool, now you know.

passion it person (La Lechera), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:35 (eleven years ago) link

Me too. It's one of my favorite things to do. Ever. I could look at pictures like this for hours.

go to party leather (ENBB), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

I need to track down and scan some real lil' mh photos. I know there are a few existing from my family's original set of furniture -- gold shag carpet and orange couch.

mayor mcpotle (mh), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link

LL - I'm digging the woman in the first pic with smoked lenses...she appears to have a dimple and the kind of overbite that makes me love its owner no questions asked.

passion it person (La Lechera), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link

That's the living room of my grandparents farmhouse; if I remember correctly the tv was in that corner.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 30 November 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

I have no idea what fabric that is, but it was a tiny suit that one of my cousins had in the 60s. I was the 13th of 15 cousins, so I got all the boys clothes that survived long enough to be handed down.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 30 November 2012 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

What was it with putting toddlers in tiny suits in the 70's? I remember that when I was 2 or 3 (1976-77) I had a suit (beige IIRC, possibly corduroy).

Paul McCartney, the Gary Barlow of The Beatles (snoball), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

I had a little mint green suit when I was about the same age. I'm certain that photos exist, but I don't have any to share atm.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 30 November 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

i remember boys in my kindergarten class wearing little suits on picture day

passion it person (La Lechera), Friday, 30 November 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

somewhere there's a photo of me as a toddler wearing a floral print waistcoat. dunno if that's an 80s equivalent to the 70s suit or if my mum was just mental.

Shane Richie Junior (Merdeyeux), Friday, 30 November 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Christmas 1974, I would have just turned 2. My sister in the Santa hat, our neighbor (and kindergarten teacher) Peg is the adult.

What strikes me when I look at these old photos is that my face is still exactly the same. Shave that kid's head and give him a beard and voila! It's 38 years later. Only the color of my eyes has changed from blue to green-grey.
