I'm glad that "Sure Thing" didn't thoroughly rout this (but then since I voted "Quickie" I guess I would say that).

I had no idea that 'Quickie' was so highly rated, that's the one I usually skip on this.

it was a single and some crazy people actually rate it highly but yeah it's no big thing

It's so louche and roguish but at the same time much more warmly intimate than you'd expect for a song of its subject matter, and the chorus ("I don't wanna be loved" he protests, but he totally does) gives it this melancholy underpinning that plays at odds with all the rest of that.
Really, it's the Goofus to "Sure Thing"'s Gallant and who fucking likes Gallant anyway?

well when you put that way i do! but yeah "Quickie" is great
― The Doc Morbama (some dude), Monday, 26 November 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link
hope that "Quickie" and "Do You..." set a precedent for him having a weirdly reggae-tinged single on every album
Ha, I like "Sure Thing" too, but it's all kind of like how Superman isn't as interesting as Batman, you feel me?
― these bitches is my sons and i make dad jokes (The Reverend), Monday, 26 November 2012 23:37 (eleven years ago) link
well if it isnt the weeknd / christopher nolan prompt i was looking for
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 00:05 (eleven years ago) link
hahaha Burton's Batman, not Nolan's
― these bitches is my sons and i make dad jokes (The Reverend), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link
(whereas sure, Weeknd is more like Nolan's, except Nolan's trilogy was actually good)

"Quickie" also has a fantastic bridge - the whole "pillage and plunder [...] get rocked by this thunder" thing, really hooky and well-delivered.

more talk about how "girls like you" is the shit
miggy's really a master of knowing when to lay on those great doubletracked vocals, no joke i can't listen to him harmonize "the truth is that i miss it for re-al" without having to rewind and listen again. so perfect
― liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link
yeah i was the one "girls like you" vote
that pharrell-esque bridge is just ethereal
love it

so “Sure Thing” is charting all over the world right now (up from 83 to 14 this week in the UK, for instance, #18 on Spotify Global, #9 on Worldwide Apple, #5 on Shazam Global) - and yes, it’s TikTok-related and it involves sped-up versions.this seems to be the general idea:https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMFovgfur/also Blackpink covered it? I had no idea! (this was in 2017): http://www.youtube.com/_7TMluHVx4Y(guess they will have/want to do it at Coachella now too)

“Sure Thing” reaches a new peak of #30 on the Billboard 100 (it stalled at #36 in 2011). it’s also #4 (!) in the UK, and charting all across the world (#4 in NZ, #8 in Lithuania, and so on). these aren’t “Running Up The Hill” stats, but it’s damn impressive.

funny turn of events. hadn't encountered this outside of your posts itt, so thanks!
have to say that the example tikktok you linked last month is not exactly bowling me over as a performance or piece of meme-ography. not sure there's much mileage in speeding this track up, either. but i may also just be old now.

it's funny this one is coming back bcuz it felt omnipresent to me at the time when i was driving a lot and listening to the radio. happy for him tho

i don't like the sped up version either but yeah good for him
oh good he's working on a new album: https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/music/miguel-sure-thing-viral-tiktok-new-album-grammy-b1059258.html
since it started taking off again i've been hoping he'd take a stab at a mainstream comeback that isn't like an edm trifle (i kinda liked the one w/ diplo but yeah)

Hopefully new album will be out soon. Yep agree with y’all re tik tok “Sure Thing “ ‘s being unimpressive but nice for getting song and hopefully him back. Saw another article that back in 2010 or so “Sure Thing “ almost got given to Usher, but then record exec decided he liked Miguel’s version and signed him .
One other item - Read that his wife filed for divorce last year.

More than 12 years after its release, Miguel hits #1 at Top 40 radio with “Sure Thing.” Released in 2010 as the second single from his debut album, All I Want Is You, the song resurged in 2022 thanks to newfound attention on TikTok. With over 1.2B streams, the track also recently broke record for most weeks in Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop song chart. This is Miguel’s first #1 at Top 40 radio and evidence that his sound is both classic and innovative.
