jenas vs robinson is a whole nother poll, prob.
― bill paxman (darraghmac), Sunday, 25 November 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link
surprised myself with my vote tbh
Jenas has been fuckin useless for so much of his career but has given some joy, more a shocking waste of talent and triumph of nonparticipation than anything else.Yeah his place in the team was a gap in a pretty smile, but in a way he was the kind of once-every-hundred-touches player that it felt right for us to have. Sandro/parker/fuck it even livermore as anchors are all improvements but i still have to rub my eyes at times when i see any of them goin in for an actual fuckin tackle, 'oh yeah we do that now' kinda thing.
Rafa. Well, he irritates me no end, but i mean the dude cried at that hillsborough tribute and it's not my fuckin club anyway and he's both a+ troll and a+ trollable and he's p fuckin good at his job, tho v prone to perverse self-sabotage. Leading us to
Jol. Clearly a likeable guy. Attack minded. Youth oriented. Showed heart and class for a lot of his time with us. But fuck me his blindspots over jenas, robinson, lee, zokora, name em, cost us and him so so badly it fuckin killed me. Week after week, cunts out there that were built to bottle any challenge, fail any short term goal, dully trample out any hope in the heart of the onlooker that this time, just once, it'll work out, we'll hang on to this lead, we can't let this one slip, fuck me these lads are bottom and we'll go third with a win, last day shits so classically typically fuckin jol team, we nearly had it but the dog ate it i got it off the toilet seat of course we practice set pieces so close but yet so far is close enough. His inability to pick anything like a form xi made the avb/gallas thing look like a gordian knot in comparison. He needed sacking, he wouldn't do his job. I hope he learned from it. I've made peace with him, wish him well. If he ever managed to get himself a defensive coach and learned how to drop a cunt i'd even maybe have him back someday.
So it's got to be robinson. A fat, shit, jittery fraud of a professional athlete, his continued lack of presence in nets for us cost us cl participation for years running, made jol a lame duck, destroyed kaboul mki and held dawson and other developing defenders back for a long time, was the second rotten pillar we tried to build a beautiful tower of youth and strength on (ledder's knee obv) and cost me more precious sanity reserves than i care to fuckin consider week after harrowing week. I know that inability to perform a sporting duty doesn't automatically bestow cuntishness, and imputing morality or otherwise in line with such performance is a flawed and damned enterprise, but to show up and collect thirty grand wages when you know fucking well there's more chance you'll cost than fortify a unit, the whole time barely squeezing into a replica maternity top, year after year of the cunt doing that little hop before he flopped ineffectual and late, always too late, well- if the cunt were a surgeon he'd be up on murder charges the cunt, and nobody'd be sayin 'he done his best'. Fuck him to smithereens.

"Jol out" is a phrase I sometimes wish I could use irl
― Named locally as Tom D (Tom D.), Monday, 26 November 2012 10:37 (eleven years ago) link
Jol is the original and probably the best but it lacks the sheer fury of the Robinson hatred, to the extent that Darragh was still basically okay with Gomes even in his worst doors-falling-off-the-car excesses. The Rafa one is kind of dull attritional crap like the manager. No one in their right mind would vote for Jenas.
Special shout-out to BAE for being in this category and actually turning it round.
Poll needs Rooney, by the way.

pleasure!
those expressing surprise at robinson's ranking need to search the first ever 'jol out' imo.
Clearly sets out that jol's failings were, iirc, the selection of an uncommitted berbatov (lol ok hands up here), a wastrel jenas, keane at right wing and numerous other selection goofs, but the key point, iterated three times (again iirc) was that he was still picking paul robinson. Jol was a secondary target but he stood in the way of the mission, it wasn't really personal but the guy was asked nicely more than once to step aside so we could harpoon mooby dick
― bill paxman (darraghmac), Monday, 26 November 2012 12:59 (eleven years ago) link
i remember repeating to many people that robinson gets beaten by shots from outside the area more than any other keeper in living memory, not an official stat I'd researched but an impression I'd picked up from you. Was always a pleasure watching MOTD and knowing that there would be one such goal at least in a Spurs or Blackburn net.

― Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 November 2012 13:11 (eleven years ago) link
oh, there's an official stat alright. Robinson was the least effective player (not just gk) in the league as measured by opta or one of em based on performance in job-specific tasks in his last full season with us - this is all iirc, but i'm p sure.
He was the worst-performing first-choice gk on that chart for two out of three years (may have covered some blackburn time here).
His shots on target against vs goals conceded ratio one year was, iirc, 57%. Think about that for a while.
― bill paxman (darraghmac), Monday, 26 November 2012 13:12 (eleven years ago) link
final 2011/12 opta stats are fuckin incredible, actually.

% shots saved 51.28 %

i remember him being sort of boosted in that 'leighton baines is arguably one of the best left sided players in the world' way, then around 2006 the commentariat decided he wasn't that great for england
pretty sure these murmurs happened before the backpass in zagreb
but he must have been at least reasonably competent up to say 2005?

― bill paxman (darraghmac), Monday, 26 November 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link
Robinson was outstanding in his first season for Spurs, not quite as great in his second but still competent, from 2006 onwards was when it started to go wrong. I think something just went in his head. Even when he was good for us his shot stopping was always a lot better than his distribution and command of a penalty area.

Drop Heskey, play Rooney alongside Owen. Never, ever allow Gerrard to be injured again. Teach Paul Scholes how to pass or drop him - replace with Jenas. Wait 18 months for Carlo Cudicini to become British, or install Paul Robinson and keep him there. Vassell has never been good enough - Beattie should replace him on the bench.

Last night I called 999 and declared war on Northumbria police before shooting an officer on the West End A69 roundabout in his T5. Sitting there waiting to bully someone. Probably a single mum who couldn't afford her car tax.
Rang again and told them they're gonna pay for what they've done to me and Sam. I went straight but they couldn't let it go.
The public need not fear me but the police should as I won't stop till I'm dead.
On the night 3/7/10 I shot Chris Brown and Samantha Stobbart, after an argument earlier that evening, and here I will make all the facts clear so there is no misunderstanding.
They took it all from me, kids, freedom, house, then Sam and Chanel. Where could I go from there? Obviously I have issues but I was pushed. I never beat my kids. I could simply admit to anything now cos it doesn't matter.
I'm a killer and a maniac but I ain't no coward.
I was terrified of losing Sam, as I knew I'd lose the plot and that, and not wanted to do so stopped me from ever beating her and anyone saying otherwise can go on a lie detector. Now I've realised Sam is really hurt I am gutted. I never meant that.
Moat then threatens to target hospital staff if they fail to save his ex-girlfriend.
Those doctors better save her or I'll hit that hospital. I still love her despite everything but my head is a mess right now and I know I'm too far gone to make much sense of it.
I guess I've finally lost it. I'm not on the run, I will keep killing police until I am dead.
They've hunted me for years, now it's my turn.
I am very sorry about Sam and wish I hadn't shot at her. Just make sure she stays alive.
I never cheated on her, I wish she hadn't on me. She pulled the trigger by doing so just as much as me.

if i may make a case for the ahem defence
trippier has been limited but ok til this season, with a brilliant right foot and a neat line in getting his cross in from most angles and situations
his attacking form has certainly dipped but his defensive performance is only slightly beneath what we're used to (not far off walker at his best, rly)
given there's no better alternative at the club its kind of on poch not to have set out the required baseline rules and i was more than half serious when i suggested that one of our two defensive leaders (more likely one per full back) should be kicking arse on the pitch regarding offside trap and getting caught wrong side of his man (the two likeliest and most damaging sins)
add this to the pretty enormous workload poch puts on his fullbacks (central defensive players get away with murder imo) and outside of the heat of the game i can take a measured view that trippier looks awful in a system that has continued to ensure he gets hammered with his own flaws every week.

this is not an incorrect position, taking into account that the alternatives were walker and trippier
walker was improved by poch removing him from certain *situations*, walker (like most players post first england cap) has never improved in himself tactically or mentally. he is still the likeliest weak link of any team in which he plays.
naughton is well let me say rather that kyle walker-peters is an upgrade
the great unmentioned is aurier, whose capacity for reckless fuckups dwarves auriers, whose positional awareness makes a baresi of trippier, whose inconsistency of delivery in attack makes sissoko look (even more) like xavi
trippier's damage to this team is something poch can contain but not remove, and hes already done it once with a stupider player

― imago, Wednesday, 1 May 2019 11:20 (four years ago) link
theyre both valid angles and i can take both as required
trippier has no inherent limiter on not playing the opposition onside or being the wrong side of his man. nothing and nobody makes him cross the ball as stupidly and poorly as he did last night and many times this season his lazy execution or planning of a pass has cost us or almost cost us. hes a professional footballer and absurdly easy on himself about not cleaning up his own sloppiness. no pass from me for that.
all of these things have been observable from day one this season and no alternative has been realistically available, save for aurier or kwp stepping up (neither has consistently done so so as to be an actual replacement). we have tried each and have played sissoko either there or in an alternate role or in a niche babysitting role at times. we are now playing a young centre half there at times. its safe to say a problem is recognised.
being unwilling to relax the demands on the position in order to perhaps safeguard or refocus on the positional/defensive area of the game seems not to be a valid consideration- blind spot from the manager here imo but the squad is in bits and what can you do. so in knowing the cunt will fuck us again and again, youd allow that a manager might attempt whatever is in his power to ameliorate or mitigate, so poch out an all
