I've done web dev stuff since 1995 and never even considered the possibility that it could be 'jiff' until I heard someone say it this way maybe three years ago. It's preposterous and wrong no matter what anybody says.

I've only come round to saying hard G in the last 5 years or so. Since I first came across them on Compuserve I pronounced it soft G, and since I never heard said it loud or heard it said by anyone else, I just always assumed it was so and said soft G, convinced I was right. But there's no point swimming against the tide of truth.

I honestly don't care how the inventor wants it to be pronounced. The language will shake out its own pronunciation in the long run, and that will be with a hard "g".
