"No Reply At All" may be my favorite thing Phil/Genesis have done so i'm ok with retreads of that

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

kinda weird that the poll cuts off before "Dance Into The Light," which might've been a contender (for my vote but nobody else's).

In '96 Collins was DOA in the American charts. 1999's "You'll Be My Heart" was his last hit.

I haven't heard the live version of "Who Said I Would." I'm assuming it's the same as the original (which also boasted kalimba) except...live?

Actually I don't know the live version, just the No Jacket one. Don't think he's someone who mixes things up that much live though.

I used to sing "Wish You Were Here" over the chorus of "I Wish It Would Rain Down"; if I'd recorded it I could have been a mashup pioneer along with Pet Shop Boys

haha yes I remember noting the resemblances when I first heard WYWH

Yeah, total ripoff of that.

man the Phil Collins and Genesis discography is competitive with Megadeth in the ellipses department:

...And Then There Were Three...
The Best...Genesis
...But Seriously
...Hits
Serious Hits...Live!
Love Songs: A Compilation... Old and New

you know what is a totally underrated Phil Collins song and one that I could have sworn was a single, is "Don't Lose My Number"

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

it was!

xxpost portly, middle-aged Phil, catching his breath having just come up the stairs while thinking of titles for the next album

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

The third single....from...No Jacket Required...

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:05 (eleven years ago) link

"Don't Lose My Number" is probably my favorite No Jacket Required single, but Soto bracketed out the first couple records here to make us focus on the more overlooked late-80s, early-90s adult-contemporary stuff, I think.

Number ... was a total single. With a plot-driven video, iirc.

fucking great song

it's sort of amazing the gigantic schmaltzhole Phil Collins fell into post No Jacket Required

Video was a bored, eye-rolling Phil meeting with various video directors and trying on their wacky proposed video scenarios! Hilarious meta-commentary on this MTV era where the music has to have pictures to go with it! What'll they think of next??

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

we should poll his solo album covers

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

Huh, all sorts of weird stuff in that video. Parodies of the Police and David Lee Roth, the Road Warrior ...

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

It's like Talking Heads Wild Wild Life.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link

would vote for Hello, I Must Be Going! because the title is all vaudevillian levity but his facial expression makes it seem more like a suicide vow (xpost)

NJR has terrific album tracks.

Soto bracketed out the first couple records here to make us focus on the more overlooked late-80s, early-90s adult-contemporary stuff, I think.

yep

Phil/Genesis prob one of the top 10 best singles acts of the '80s, can't believe how many jams Phil turned out

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

omg remember that terrible pseudo-dub remix of "In The Air Tonight"

Soto bracketed out the first couple records here to make us focus on the more overlooked late-80s, early-90s adult-contemporary stuff, I think.

I was confused because "Who Said I Would?" was a NJR album track; I didn't realize that a live version was later released as a single

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:15 (eleven years ago) link

We've talked about it before, but man, if you include all his assists and non album tracks, from "Against All Odds" to Frida to Philip Bailey to Robert Plant, Howard Jones' lovely "No One is To Blame," John Martyn (!), "Do They Know It's Christmas" ...

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Plus he had his solo career, Geness, and Brand X (for a bit).

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, never realized the "No One Is To Blame" connection before, I saw balls bring it up earlier but thought he was just making a sonic comparison. I love that track.

My favorite Phil story:

Apparently Phil played congas on "Art of Dying" on a session for All Things Must Pass, but there were no congas in the final mix and he wasn't credited on the album. Years later, when he heard that George was remastering ATMP, he mentioned this to a mutual friend. A few days later, a tape showed up in the mail with a note from George saying "is this you"? Phil played the tape and heard a version of "Art of Dying" with absolutely horrible congas, at the end of which he could hear George saying to Phil Spector "let's try it again without the conga player." Phil was mortified. A few days later, George called and asked if he got the tape. Phil started to say George didn't have to embarrass him like that, but George laughingly interrupted and said that it wasn't really Phil's congas, that he had Ray Cooper play really bad congas on purpose and sent it to Phil as a joke, and that Phil's congas were fine. Phil was finally credited on the ATMP reissue.

He really jolted that song to life; the original is limp as fuck.

Sing it now, with me:

lol George Harrison was such a bro

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link

It's a pretty song. I'm shocked Glee or something hasn't done it.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha that conga story is great, <3 george harrison

good Phil harmonies too xpost to Josh

Phil played drums on a couple Taking Tiger Mountain tracks iirc (xp to Josh, is that what you're talking about?)

that's the way to choke a jiving spirit (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

Phil played a bunch of drums on "Another Green World,' actually, and a bit of "Before and After Science." Oh, and Peter Gabriel's third album.

Oh, forgot he was playing on all those Clapton albums in the '80s, too. Busy guy.

Soundtrack

Several Phil Collins singles were released from the soundtrack, including "A Groovy Kind of Love" and "Two Hearts", which reached #1 and #6 on the UK Singles Chart, respectively. Both songs were Number One singles in the US.[1] Phil Collins also co-wrote "Loco in Acapulco", performed by The Four Tops for the soundtrack. Two Hearts received an Oscar nomination for Best song in 1988.

Also production/drums on "Foever Man", "She's Waiting"--which could've used a bit of Buster's ellipses: "Forever...Man" and "...She's Waiting..."

Is it wrong to love "It's In The Way That You Use It"? It and "Forever Man" are the only eighties Clapton I can stand.

Clapton not even trying here, as per the '80s. And much of his career. But plenty of Phil, Live Aid MVP:
