I was obssessed with Another Day in Paradise as a child. I don't know what I thought he sang instead of blisters in the line "she's got blisters on the soles of her feet"; like, maybe "the shiz"...? I asked my mom what that meant, "the shiz on the soles of her feet".
That was probably one of her first heads' up that I was going to turn out a very strange individual.

"Something Happened On the Way to Heaven" s one of the three or four of Phil's solo jamz u really need.

Haven't seen it but I like to imagine the video of Something Happened... being a band performance thing with the musicians being really into it, grinning at each other across the stage and joining in with the "How many times" bit, even if they're not near a microphone. Gets my vote.

yeah, maybe I'm still hearing it through my childhood ears, but it still sounds alright to me. the mood in beginning is rather beautiful - it has a feeling I think Collins was really kind of the best at. could probably do without the strings arrangments further into it though.

I can't quite go for "Something Happened..." because of Collins' pitch.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:01 (eleven years ago) link
I used to love the little melody that played in the breaks in "Another Day In Paradise" and the cover by Euro-dance act Jamtronix too. This was when I was about 9 though.

― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:23 (eleven years ago) link
i am surprised at how many crumby Phil Collins songs I know. There must have been one on every Now! compilation ever released from 1981-1993
― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:33 (eleven years ago) link
Probably be alone in this but I voted for Who Said I Would. Don't like any of these songs AT ALL, but that one at least has some sort of demented energy to it - maniacal gremlin stomp will always beat goofy Phil. Also there is some sort of (fake?) marimba thing going on right at the start that is actually kind of pretty, reminds me a bit of San Jacinto.
― Albert Crampus (NickB), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:37 (eleven years ago) link
I am entirely too familiar with these songs due to my dad being a major Collins stan and his albums being the soundtrack to about 65% of car journeys I made with my family while growing up. I can recall each and every moment of all of these, much to my dismay.
"Two Hearts" is the one be least unhappy to listen to now. Might have to vote for "Another Day in Paradise" though, because it's one of the most cringeworthy I CARE ABOUT IMPORTANT ISSUES!!! songs ever penned. Also the only one to be covered by a Spice Girl, AFAIK.

video for Something Happened on the Way to Heaven is Phil and band at practice space through the eyes of a dog who is just hangin around the premises iirc

I haven't heard the live version of "Who Said I Would." I'm assuming it's the same as the original (which also boasted kalimba) except...live?
Oh, interesting. I didn't know "Groovy Kind of Love" was a cover.

I mean, I knew it was a Clementi rip but I didn't know the pop song itself was written in the 60s.

"Something Happened..." is sort of a rewrite of "No Reply At All," but inferior. Though you take what you can get at this point.

Man, I'm stoked to see this much love for "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven!" I have a very clear memory of having it stuck in my head in the front foyer/entry area of my elementary school, waiting for my ride home at the end of the day - must have been in third grade.
We Can't Dance and ...But Seriously were both heavily discussed in the New Jersey thread; otoh it was much more ridiculously successful that you'd guess by its presence today is a key determinant of New Jersey status.

In '96 Collins was DOA in the American charts. 1999's "You'll Be My Heart" was his last hit.

"Don't Lose My Number" is probably my favorite No Jacket Required single, but Soto bracketed out the first couple records here to make us focus on the more overlooked late-80s, early-90s adult-contemporary stuff, I think.
