Tough. I'll say ... "Something Happened On the Way to Heaven." Song is solid. Would have made a good Billy Ocean jam.

Two Hearts is the only one I can imagine listening to for more than three bars or so.

And even that is simply a rehash of his "You Can't Hurry Love" cover.

This is probably going to spur my long-deferred "Stevie Wonder singles post-Musiquarium" poll.

"Two Hearts" is better than "You Can't Hurry Love" though: it's got a couple of cool filigrees.

I refuse to vote in this poll on the principle that all of these tracks are crushingly awful... especially 'Another Day In Paradise'. Yeah, it might be another day in paradise for you, Philip, waking up on your boat to glorious sunshine baking your cueball noggin, pausing briefly from your siesta to compose another heap of dung or to divorce your wife by fax.

Adored Groovy Kind of Love as a kid.

He'd already two superb homeless songs: "Long Long Way to Go" (one of his best album tracks) and Genesis' "Man on the Corner."

voted something happened on the way to heaven - a shame philip bailey didn't sing on this. groovy kind of love gets brought up as an example of 'clearly awful phil collins' (popular gave it a 4) but i like it, there's a sparseness to that kind of phil collins adult contemporary (cf 'no one is to blame') that makes them much more charming or at worst more bearable than concurrent hits by michael bolton, etc.

"Something Happened..." really needs Philip Bailey.

i can remember when both sides of the story came out and relatively flopped and it was apparent that this weird unlikely midas run phil collins had had was over. when sears sponsored the tour it seemed all too fitting.

The Both Sides flop coincided with the dumping of fat white middle-aged men from VH-1 and MTV.

that's a weird case cuz there's such a gap between no jacket required and it, w/ so much in that gap - invisible touch, buster. otoh it was much more ridiculously successful that you'd guess by its presence today, even the hits from it that haven't completely disappeared from radio aren't nearly as persistent as the earlier solo or even genesis hits. at the same time i do on occasion hear 'another day in paradise' or 'something happened' whereas i haven't heard anything from we can't dance in twenty years.

"We Can't Dance" isn't bad. It just so happens that the title track is pretty much the worst thing the band ever did.

...But Seriously was the #2 album of 1990 here and one of the biggest sellers ever in England.

I would hear the title track, Jesus He Knows Me and No Son Of Mine the odd time.

woah i do still hear 'hold on my heart', which is something cuz it wasn't nearly as big a hit as 'no son of mine' or 'i can't dance' or even 'jesus he knows me', it might have something to do w/ being a much much better song than the other we can't dance hits. seems like 'i can't dance' might've been a tipping point for phil.

actually "Hold On..." was almost as big as "No Son of Mine" (both top fifteen, the former #1 AC) and much bigger than "Jesus" (which peaked in the top thirty).

and it's true: even at the time I heard "Hold On My Heart" a lot more than "I Can't Dance" (the only top ten).

and as far as he fell from his 80s heights (as did bruce and prince and even mj eventually - only madonna really managed to maintain hot 100 relevance into this century) he still kept having adult contemporary hits for a while longer and up to the end had chart topping albums in the uk.

In terms of commercial Phil-led Genesis We Can't Dance could be a New Jersey.

I was obssessed with Another Day in Paradise as a child. I don't know what I thought he sang instead of blisters in the line "she's got blisters on the soles of her feet"; like, maybe "the shiz"...? I asked my mom what that meant, "the shiz on the soles of her feet".

That was probably one of her first heads' up that I was going to turn out a very strange individual.

"Something Happened On the Way to Heaven" s one of the three or four of Phil's solo jamz u really need.

Haven't seen it but I like to imagine the video of Something Happened... being a band performance thing with the musicians being really into it, grinning at each other across the stage and joining in with the "How many times" bit, even if they're not near a microphone. Gets my vote.

yeah, maybe I'm still hearing it through my childhood ears, but it still sounds alright to me. the mood in beginning is rather beautiful - it has a feeling I think Collins was really kind of the best at. could probably do without the strings arrangments further into it though.

I can't quite go for "Something Happened..." because of Collins' pitch.

I was confused because "Who Said I Would?" was a NJR album track; I didn't realize that a live version was later released as a single

We've talked about it before, but man, if you include all his assists and non album tracks, from "Against All Odds" to Frida to Philip Bailey to Robert Plant, Howard Jones' lovely "No One is To Blame," John Martyn (!), "Do They Know It's Christmas" ...

Plus he had his solo career, Geness, and Brand X (for a bit).

Wow, never realized the "No One Is To Blame" connection before, I saw balls bring it up earlier but thought he was just making a sonic comparison. I love that track.

My favorite Phil story:

Apparently Phil played congas on "Art of Dying" on a session for All Things Must Pass, but there were no congas in the final mix and he wasn't credited on the album. Years later, when he heard that George was remastering ATMP, he mentioned this to a mutual friend. A few days later, a tape showed up in the mail with a note from George saying "is this you"? Phil played the tape and heard a version of "Art of Dying" with absolutely horrible congas, at the end of which he could hear George saying to Phil Spector "let's try it again without the conga player." Phil was mortified. A few days later, George called and asked if he got the tape. Phil started to say George didn't have to embarrass him like that, but George laughingly interrupted and said that it wasn't really Phil's congas, that he had Ray Cooper play really bad congas on purpose and sent it to Phil as a joke, and that Phil's congas were fine. Phil was finally credited on the ATMP reissue.

He really jolted that song to life; the original is limp as fuck.

Phil played a bunch of drums on "Another Green World,' actually, and a bit of "Before and After Science." Oh, and Peter Gabriel's third album.

Oh, forgot he was playing on all those Clapton albums in the '80s, too. Busy guy.
