at my funeral my life's work, a screed entitled Disputatio pro declaratione virtutis Loadedis, will be read by mourners as a copy of the master tape is backed over by a monster truck

all these famouses are already on t-shirts and have identities that are reducible to a t-shirt. they're walking t-shirts themselves. the semiotics of a walking t-shirt wearing a t-shirt are going to be different than those of a civilian wearing the same shirt.

like i could subsume my identity in a smiths shirt but durst can't recede in the same way. he can only scramble the durst signal, redirect it, attempt counterpoint or amplification, or point to something interior but he can't lose himself in the smiths signal.

not sayin these ppl can't wear a band shirt for the same reasons as anybody else but ilx and authorial intent etc..

slugbuggy, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 09:17 (eleven years ago) link

What yr sayin' is, it's quite possible that a famous wearing a tshirt could in itself become a t-shirt with meaning, but a famous could not wear that shirt because π

Mark G, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 09:23 (eleven years ago) link

you mean like durst wearing a shirt that has a pic of duff wearing a motorhead shirt? only if that was an officially merchandised duff shirt, and the duff/ motorhead conflict collapsed into a singularity. otherwise it's just a dickhead wearing some shirt.

slugbuggy, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 10:07 (eleven years ago) link

here's someone wondering, seemingly in earnest, why Chris Brown didn't save money by making his own punk rock jacket: http://www.aux.tv/2012/11/chris-brown-finally-kills-punk-rock-with-patched-up-leather-jacket-featuring-exploited-municipal-waste-and-cro-mags-patches/

"A site like Interpunk sells band patches for about $3-4 a piece"

never realised that the look of 'DOOM' from the game Doom was p. much directly inspired from the look of 'DOOM' from the band Doom

The guitar/vocalist dude from JEFF The Brotherhood likes his metal bands too, or at least metal band shirts...

This one hurts my head. Not the Christina Black Flag tee but, um, a Skrewdriver shirt for her kid? Really? Maybe this is a shop (he asks hopefully)?

This thread would be a lot more fun if it it was less "LOL FAMOUS PERSON DOESN'T KNOW AS MUCH ABOUT BAND AS ME BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO BUSY BEING FAMOUS" and was more "Hey, isn't this neat?"

so this here is ke$ha and i think it's all kinds of neat:

Also, the kid's Big Bad Wolf shirt is awesome.

how's life, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 08:47 (ten years ago) link

The interesting thing about this is that ideally while people should wear tshirts of other musicians if they sound nothing like them, when it comes to places the opposite is true and they should only wear a tshirt of a place they have actually been to

cog, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 09:17 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah, no way would that little guy have met the height requirements for the Big Bad Wolf.

how's life, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 10:59 (ten years ago) link

although funnily enough he would have met the white requirements for Skrewdriver.

Did you catch the Ke$ha/Residents controversy from like a month ago?

the awesome thing about that story is that the residents, who have never ever ever appropriated another artists' image, nope, not them, are now concerned in an apparently lawyerly way about someone appropriating theirs.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 17:51 (ten years ago) link

yeah because there is no difference between the Residents and THE BEATLES

definitely the most offensive thing about this story and the total wasteman in it is that he made me spend five minutes trying to verify if he's wearing a Sir Lord Baltimore shirt in the pic (he isn't)

Word from Lorde's publicist (who I'm friendly with) is that she's actually a Cramps fan. As such, I look forward to her inevitable cover of "Goo Goo Muck."

I've long had a hunch that Poison Idea would follow after the Ramones then Motorhead then Black Flag T-shirt photo opportunities were depleted.
