Kind of GTA Spiderman, missions were all far too dull but free-roaming around a semi-realistic New York as Spidey was good fun. - JimD

This game, man. You spend like 1 hour going over and over and over the same bit, trying to do it flawlessly. Your reward? A 30 second montage of your badass driving skills. I think there was just the right difficulty, and the handling on the cars was actually really well balanced meaning you could throw them in controlled skids around corners and know exactly how they would act. - Craig G

Hah, without the cover image I would have totally forgotten that Spiderman 2 was a movie tie-in. It was pretty good, but a lot of the same "a dozen different things to do" issues as Arkham City.

Kind of before its time (not least because I think it actually worked better than kinect seems to now), felt amazingly cutting edge when it came out. Nobody ever quite came up with a game to suit it, but the tech-demo minigame collections were fun enough in themselves, especially that one where you had to punch loads of tiny ninjas. - JimD

I would definitely take GTA III over Vice City - it had literal depth, bridges, cliffs, a dam - VC was too damn flat.
― Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 18:34 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, I considered voting GTA 3 over VC for the same reason. had a blast exploring everything on foot and trying to climb up to weird places and playing it like a metroid game or something. went with VC in the end since everything else was improved in a major way. also, motorcycles!
didn't really consider SA over either since I had gotten a little burned out on the series by that point.
― original bgm, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 18:39 (eleven years ago) link
I definitely agree about the depth issue. But it also helped that III was the first one I played.
― pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 18:54 (eleven years ago) link

SA blew the other two out of the water IMO, so it's really hard to go back to those. Really felt this when I picked up the iOS port of III. VC was really flat, but overall a marked improvement on III.

I think I was one of the votes for OutRun 2006 and I only for the first time played it on anything other than a D-Pad recently (they have it at a bowling alley in Montreal) and it still absolutely holds up. It is at once the most effortless racing game ever -- everything feels floaty, and clean, but not in a control-less way -- and one of the most white-knuckle, as you gun it through the offramps to make it to the next checkpoint at the end of each level. The version I played most was admittedly the PC port but I loved the idea that every level was a different place in America (or, later, when I unlocked the second chunk of levels, I think it was the rest of the world?) and that you just drove so fast that you got from SoCal to San Francisco in 90 seconds. It fit the feel of the game perfectly -- a ten-minute drive across the world in a drifty, noisy Ferrari with a somewhat needy, incredibly encouraging babe in the passenger's seat. OutRun is bliss.
