Voted Workin' - 'It Never Entered My Mind' is so beautiful, and I love the cover pic of Miles and steamroller!

generally think of these as one big album, so i'm not sure what to vote for...maybe "steamin'"? the long "surrey" is perfect. these albums are so great.

the red garland records from this period are awesome too.

What about the first album by this quintet, which predates these sessions by about a year? Lots of killer stuff on that disc, too.

A key factor to Miles' minimalism was his aversion to the letter g

It's the g's he doesn't say.

Workin' is definitely the one I listen to the most, plus it's how I found out about Ahmad Jamal.

anyhoo! listened to workin' last night and ward fowler otm -- "it never entered my mind" is pretty remarkable, such a perfect rendering of that tune (though the one miles did a few years earlier w/ horace silver is amazing too). it's funny, before i heard these records I had an entirely different idea of what they would sound like -- i think because of miles' badass personality, i thought they'd be these raw, bluesy workouts (probably more along the lines of art blakey/jazz messengers). but they're actually super-focused on melody, delicacy and just plain prettiness.

Relaxin' for me: "I'll play it for you and tell you what it is later."

I love how on the mid-60s quintet records he says "Let's hear some of that, Teo!" before the band even stops playing.

I like digging out Garland's Groovy sometimes (also w/ Chambers) which is another ace album.

didn't even notice this, just posted about Workin' on the "bands you keep trying to get into" thread. It's impossible to choose between all these...
