Ha, no way, I've always heard this as "and i quietly count with the gun"

you're possibly right, and i certainly prefer your version as a opening line. i wasn't really sure so checked with some dodgy lyrics website. 'with her gone' does fit in with the whole theme of the woman 'stealing away' etc though. in conclusion, i'm still none the wiser

anyway, what a great goddamn song
