hmm. kinda think that's an insight-light take on the situation myself.

Manchild in Beantown (stevie), Thursday, 1 November 2012 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

why, because you happen to be a fan of his? he just said how much he earns and described himself as the best broadcaster in britain. do you have the bbc budget to hand?

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 1 November 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

note the bbc did him the honour of quoting his side of the story in their news report.

do you still work for the bbc, lg?

Manchild in Beantown (stevie), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

not anymore.

well, that's reporting 101, isn't it?

Manchild in Beantown (stevie), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link

i just think it's one word against another, they won't even comment on him saying it's about money. i'm not claiming the beeb is run in some perfect way, but this sort of pile-on is just pretty unfair. and it's a bit unfair of him too, he's been given a good career by the beeb and it's not as if he'll be destitute and jobless now.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

I hate unfair Beeb-drubbing as much as the next guy (who isn't owned by Murdoch) but I'm really quite disappointed by this news, as I think Danny's a great broadcaster, and I'd much rather the corporation spent their money on him than spunking it on another stupid and expensive brand ident ad campaign. I mean, there's nuances here beyond Baker being an anti-BBC egotist really, aren't there?

Manchild in Beantown (stevie), Thursday, 1 November 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

yes, definitely. i can understand laying into the bbc, i mean, self-flagellation is so inherent to being part of it (or having once worked there) like, half the time you feel you are working against the bbc not for it.

all of that said, when someone so public comes out and slates it, using the language he has used, it is instantly interpreted in that "oh bloody bbc bosses" way that kind of fuels the same distaste for the entire organisation.

i don't know why i'm defending them, i will never, ever, not hold bitterness about the way i had to leave one job in bbc. NEVER! it's a calm bitterness now but it's still there.

that said I'm not announcing this to thousands of people.

wouldn't expect any better from a Millwall fan, but surprising that this smug, self-satisfied prick has decided to jump on his own grenade in such a fashion.

holy fuck

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link

he quickly deleted it and said he didn't see the racist connotations because his mind "isn't diseased".

calzino, Wednesday, 8 May 2019 21:34 (four years ago) link

Yeah I’m interpreting it as him being gobsmackingly ignorant or blind towards racism rather than it being intended as a racist insult but even so it’s a fucking shocker of a tweet

Weird he decided to tweet this after the birth of this particular royal baby, makes u think

gyac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:01 (four years ago) link

Will stick my head up here and say I really liked his show and that he tweeted the same photo at the last few royal births, dunno if you all want to flag me or tell me to fuck off or something?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:03 (four years ago) link

If that’s true then that’s a bit different but it’s still incredibly stupid!

gyac, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:09 (four years ago) link

yes i think his emerging line is "i don't really pay any attention to the royals, it's all just a distant circus to me" -- but "i fucked up bcz i wasn't even slightly paying attention" isn't much of a defence for a very highly paid media professional really

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:11 (four years ago) link

that's one of the dangers of being a real-life Colin Hunt with an army of admirers who never tell you to stfu!

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 10:17 (four years ago) link

His "deleting my tweet" was conciliatory and apologetic.

Compare it to his post sacking tweets, hmmmmmmm

god that show made Five Live unlistenable on a Saturday morning, please replace with po-faced journos going on and on about sport. not joking.

his general persona/personality has been even more unpleasant than usual for a long time. this sort of macho, ranting idiocy:

He later attacked the BBC for its handling of the decision, describing the call from 5 Live firing him as “a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity”.

He added on Twitter: “They took a tone that said I actually meant that ridiculous tweet and the BBC must uphold blah blah blah. Literally threw me under the bus. Could hear the suits knees knocking.”

obviously there were his (unintentionally) amusing tweets when england lost to iceland in the euros also - he comes across like a football alex jones.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:13 (four years ago) link

i don't know the business but maybe sometimes the suits are just looking for the first good excuse that comes along

mark s, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:22 (four years ago) link

yeah i think if they weren't facing the pensioner license fee black hole in their funding in the coming years it might have been a different outcome. he's become another victim of austerity :p

they're scared! he's getting too close to the truth!

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:30 (four years ago) link

Heh.

I quite like his radio show but there's a wilful ignorance involved on my part because, particularly on Twitter, he's been building to something like this for ages.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:30 (four years ago) link

if I was at all invested in affirming Danny Baker's racism I would probably compile all the times he claimed to have killed Bob Marley

Terry Major-Ball Will Tell You (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:34 (four years ago) link

yeah I remember that, joking about causing cancer in Bob Marley after a football tackle or something.. what a bizarre dickhead.

calzino, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:38 (four years ago) link

As an aside, I can’t stand the typo/misspelling that gives us GAFFS instead of GAFFES.

Did he tho? His line seems to be "he would have", not "he did" amd no one seems to have dug out these alleged tweets.

Ned Trifle X, Thursday, 9 May 2019 11:58 (four years ago) link

He definitely didn't for the three Will'n'Kate births.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Thursday, 9 May 2019 12:09 (four years ago) link

Charlton forum largely in accord with ILX here tbh, general line is that he wasn't being consciously racist but pretty thick. BBC decision generally regarded as a ridiculous kneejerk and I'd be inclined to agree on principle tbh - if there's no malicious intent, as seems pretty obvious, why sack him? Not that I'm shedding too many tears
