I left the movie having laughed a lot, but not having sighed with whimsical recognition as much as I think the main character would have wanted me to. I left with the feeling that I wouldn't want to spend five minutes around this insanely self-involved dude. What a perfectly intolerable "creative" type.

But the movie never tries to deny that Stephan is insufferable. He's bloody creepy, and the love interest Stephanie tells him so (after he breaks into her apartment!), along with a lot of other good advice, like that he needs to develop a thicker skin. The movie indulges in the childishness of its subject, but it does not ever condone it.

I once knew people like Stephan. I don't anymore. I wonder if they're still out there making insane asses of themselves and completely failing to connect to other people.

I'm pretty sure we are all good people trying their best here, it would be easier if we all started with that assumption. There are ways of correcting unlikeable behaviour that doesn't require 'policing' per se.
