do people dislike "celebration" because of its constant prescence at weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc.? besides "she's so fresh" makes up for that immediately!

I also don't recall anyone saying completely dismissing Public Enemy -- maybe their stuff after 1991, but not their entire oeuvre. Though I could be wrong.

the Beatles? I've only met one person in my life who claimed to completely hate the Beatles, but I suspected it was some kind of silly, reactionary thing...

I just saw Kool and the Gang over the summer in Baltimore. The crowd was mostly black and old enough to remember when those songs came out. This really added to the experience, as I would have hated to watch the show with anyone who though that liking Kool and the Gang was a way of being ironic.

Can I add... The Spinners, Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, Chaka Khan?

in that recent White Stripes MOJO article Jack White says something to the effect that "anyone who says they don't like the Beatles doesn't really like music." Which strikes me as kinda true, but on the other hand maybe this should just go under the "irritating things musicians say" thread...

I don't like the Beatles. The Pixies only strike me as okay, pretty good - I don't love them. I do like them much better than the Stone Roses, though. Has anyone shot down the Beach Boys yet? Mark is joking with the Clash, but I think Pulp and James Brown are still going. A few more worth trying: Little Richard, Al Green, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Shangri-Las, T. Rex.

I don't like Pulp, but I can get behind James Brown and the Beach Boys (although I'm skeptical that there isn't at least one Beach Boys hata out there, because I personally know a great many). Not gonna touch why you don't like the Beatles...

there have been a lot of threads regarding the beatles, and in general, it seems a lot of people can't come to terms with the idea that liking the beatles is something everybody HAS to do. I know that for me, personally, John Lennon's deification has affected my ability to listen to his solo work. But I am a pop loser, so I like McCartney more anyways.

I've never much liked any of their songs. I own loads of cover versions of their stuff by lots of my favourite singers, and they are invariably the worst moments on albums by Aretha, Al Green, Otis and others. Ordinary performers. By far the most overrated act ever. Imposed loads of bad paradigms, and led to a stupid respectability for pop.

C'mon, the Beach Boys are hugely sad. Any band that counts Mike Love in its ranks and records tepid shit like "Kokomo" renders themselves utterly ridiculous. Consider them shot down.

That's why I said take issue with his peak work, not with the "entirety of his career" or whatever. The crap can negate his merit, but not the merit of stuff like Talking Book, etc.

Anyway, now I guess I'll just throw my weight behind T. Rex and James Brown, since the Beatles and the Boys seem like dubious contenders.

Some not mentioned. In chronological order Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Prima, Elvis presley, Kinks, Skatalites, New Vaudeville Band, Slade, Motorhead, Chic, Human League, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Saint Etienne.....There's no great unifying band or artist after 1991.

If we go by Alex's "if someone has released crap they're shot down", I'd say Iggy Pop would be the first one to go. I dig "Search & Destroy" as much as the next guy, but what about that 80's catalogue? Brrrr....

I'm willing to bet I'm the only person on ILM who can't stand ABBA, and even I like a few songs.

Everyone loves *some* Kraftwerk for sure.

The closest I can get is I like Afrika Bambaata songs that sample 'em.

C'mon, I have to admit that even Killing Joke has released utter garbage (ladies & gentlemen, I give you OUTSIDE THE GATE), but let's remember the question: "Is there a single band/artist that EVERYONE can admit to liking?"

Personally speaking, no matter how great some of Stevie Wonder's stuff may be, I absolutely *LOATHE* some of his later work to the extent that I cannot bear to listen to *ANY* Stevie Wonder, and thus I cannot admit to liking him.

I do like the Pixies, the Clash, New Order, the Beatles, Kraftwerk, and Buzzcocks.

Daniel's spot-on about some of Ig's 80's work (let alone some of his 90's work)....some of which is irrefutably sub-par, but in the same way WL defends Stevie Wonder, I'll stand by Iggy. But, I suppose I can understand why some might not think he's exactly the messiah.

Has anyone mentioned the Rolling Stones as yet?

Like you and Stevie Wonder, I honestly can't listen to the Stones anymore - even the stuff I used to love - without feeling sorta dirty and used. They're just such fucking trendhoppers and unrepentant whores.

Honestly, the only way this discussion could ever be relevant, would be if it were limited to popular music, and preferrably stuff that 'everyone' listens to. Not that hard to find something that no-one would object to simply on the account of never having heard it. "Who doesn't like Monk & Canatella?"
