anyone here heard any gentleman?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:16 (nineteen years ago) link

yes.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

ok

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

i heard one song, played very loud in that basement shop on berwick street (daddy kool?). i liked it well enough. months later, i was in munich and saw loads of gentleman records for sale. my german friend saw me looking at them and went spastic: "what are you doing with those? you're not buying that, are you? he's a fraud! he talks about africa! etc etc". she totally shamed me, and i left empty-handed. that's the sad story of me and gentleman.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:23 (nineteen years ago) link

poor thing! i'm not keen, myself, but he's not bad and certainly better than snow. still i didn't understand people going nutso for the dr ring-ding stuff, either... found that odd.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:27 (nineteen years ago) link

actually i feel worse for you being in daddy kool in the 1st place. was the really rude guy working there when you visited?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Are germans the most "purist" dancehall fans these days?

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:34 (nineteen years ago) link

do you really hate the fat truckers?

No, not personally, lauren. I should not have spoken so brashly and suddenly and I apologize if they are friends. I have obvious Hoxton issues!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I believe there's a trucker hat with that written on it somewhere.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Someone was telling me the other day that Ce'cile just got signed to some big US label - I'm very hazy on the details, but if that's true, I think that she has the potential to outsell M.I.A. by a significant margin. Ce'cile is just so much more pop.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

delicious vinyl

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i need to be less sensitive. re: daddy kool, the really rude guy is the owner isn't he? he's a TOTAL BASTARD ("you want to listen to that before you buy it? absolutely not!"). i've only encountered him twice, though. the other guys who work there have been so, so nice to me, which is why i always pop in when i'm doing a berwick street run.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

his name is keith and he is, honestly, world-famous for being rude. he has insulted/ignored friends of mine from all over the globe. he doesn't work there much.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:54 (nineteen years ago) link

such a jackass. once i had one of the staff whisper, "you should come back when he's not around."

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:56 (nineteen years ago) link

check yer... um... gmail, lauren

it's kind of an unwritten law that reggae shops in london have to hgave at least one unreasonable idiot workong in them, though. i can only think of one exception.

You can get it here, Mohair.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 1 July 2004 16:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Diplo's supposed to be hooking up some beats for Mia... good match

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 1 July 2004 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I thought Galang was good, though not amazing. I love Sunshowers. I don't put it in the same bracket as Ce'Cile etc though. Just enjoyable pop.

boom! i fucked your hard-drive (don), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:03 (nineteen years ago) link

and um.. it sounds a bit more *white* than a lot of dancehall stuff, so probably easier to listen to for the hipster crowd. cf/ Outkast's last album.

Clearly we're not discussing this MIA

"still i didn't understand people going nutso for the dr ring-ding stuff, either... found that odd."

Yeah but how much of that was because people hadn't heard Sizzla's "Obstacles" or the Tanya Stephens track on the same riddim? Although I can't talk 'cos I really enjoy Seeed's own "Music Monks"!

I think what makes "Galang" work is how it fails to be dancehall - both at a musical and vocal level - in a way that is much less obvious and harder to pinpoint than, say, The Bug. If The Bug is the predictable musical result of a mental exercise, "Galang" feels more like a mutation, but an interestingly regressive mutation, like a throwback or recessive gene. None of which makes it better than dancehall (nor would I consider it as good as my top ten dancehall tracks for this year) or more worthy of hype than any particular artist, but I can see how and why it intrigues people. I think the ILM hype preceded the XL hype or knowledge of the Fat Truckers connection, so I don't think that's so much of a defining factor at least on here.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 July 2004 23:44 (nineteen years ago) link

if you don't like Galang you're already dead.

I actually prefer sunshowers now though. (its not called "Sun Shawa" b.t.w., this bugs me).

jed_ (jed), Friday, 2 July 2004 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
so...SUNSHOWERS wasn't a hit then?

piscesboy, Friday, 16 July 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

four weeks pass...
Does Steve Mackey have a co-write on Galang as well as Sunshowers? This may have been answered elsewhere, I was just kind of hoping he DID.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 13 August 2004 16:25 (nineteen years ago) link

The problem with Sunshowers is that it's OK, but always just makes me want to hear the Dr Buzzard original.

you people...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 13 August 2004 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

candour floss (mwah), Sunday, 26 September 2004 06:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Having heard "You're good" and "Chinna girl" (the Richard X produced track), two of the Mia albums tracks, all I can say is that the sound is just a bit too similar to her earlier tracks.

Andreas, Sunday, 26 September 2004 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

between annie, rachel stevens, MIA, and a handful of other things i feel like we're moving into some renewed golden age for modernist girl pop.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:37 (nineteen years ago) link

also i'd probably lapse into petty, indefensible ideological justifications for why MIA and destiny's child operate in separate aesthetic universes.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:38 (nineteen years ago) link

You've already made a good start - and admit it - making petty, indefensible ideological justifications is half the fun. Or am I just being lazy and opting out of doing one myself.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i got an mp3 of it already.

i don't understand how someone could say this song doesn't have roots in dancehall.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Sunday, 26 September 2004 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

"Also I don't see the connection to dancehall at all. - djdee"

Um I think you said it.

overstatement i apologize. But I also said "it seems just as connected as electroclash" and I was more responding to what Stelfox had said about people claiming it to be dancehall.

Alex in SF keeping me on my toes.
