i will listen to it tonight before i go to bed, i think. i remember it feeling very grey, almost cold.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

but yeah, villalobos was my major oversight of '03, in much the same way that 2 many DJs was my major oversight of '02.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:43 (twenty years ago) link

I should clarify though: I sort of say I don't trust such statements because I myself often find it difficult to decide whether I love microhouse-y mixes (esp. of the Perlon kind) for ages after I get them - this happened to me with Taka Taka too. The discreteness of the music allows it to teeter between brilliance and boredom and for a long time it feels like it could go either way.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:47 (twenty years ago) link

i know what you mean: a lot of time i feel like my opinions on minimal dance is not to be trusted because i am so resolutely picky and random about it...i'm not really sure i even like the idea of minimal techno/house at base. sometimes.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:54 (twenty years ago) link

Because it can hold too closely to certain constraints?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:14 (twenty years ago) link

mmm...because a. i'm a vulgarities guy at heart, i think, b. the pure muchness of what's out there coupled with the changing-sameness of the product [dj fodder or not...and kind of a moot point with mixes and comps and single artist lps] does add fuel to my feeling that there's just too much undistinguished music out there these days, and c. it sometimes seems like a lot of work to wade through it all just for that one track with a real good hi-hat sound for eight minutes.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:19 (twenty years ago) link

do you guys like regular techno like from a few years back?
Dave Clark, Jeff Mills, 69, ect...

to me the micro thing made the house thing interesting rather than reverse. I like the cold sound of techno that is somehow warmed by the occassional forays into emotion that micohouse does. Although at times some of the perlon stuff almost seems like dj tools (which i am not fond of) rather than proper techno

hector (hector), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 05:22 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah "DJ Tools" is a good shorthand term for what I was saying before about the Perlon tracks I don't click with. It's interesting how Perlon and Playhouse have a similar overall sonic approach but Perlon is so tracky (Nicolai excepted) and Playhouse so songful.

Lately almost all of the "micro"-house I've clicked with has been of the rougher and tougher variety - see the second half of that Sami Koivikko mix or this excellent mix (the first one) which intersperses microhouse with marvellous steroid electro and techno.

seventeen years pass...

am I alone in almost always liking Nicolai's stuff more than anything else on Perlon

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Thursday, 22 July 2021 01:19 (two years ago) link

it seemed to me that perlon had some kind of taint to it when i started getting into dance music around 2013 and i've been very ignorant of minimal up until now but wow this stuff is awesome.

That MNML Track

Ricardo Villalobos - Two Kids Set Off
Matt John - Rising Scope

Everything from International Anything is both bonkers and amazing - Echo Of The Year (B-side to Like This Girl) is the best!

When I finished my doctorate a few years ago, one off my gifts to myself was to fill in the gaps of my Perlon collection, including every release from their first ten years (though I’m still missing Morane the beach. That collection is among my most prized possessions - perlon has been such a guiding light for me since I started listened to house. Even if I’m not always excited by their more recent stuff, I’ve always felt something special about Perlon

My favourite release and 20 other favourites, ordered chronologically and spanning the label’s history.

🏆#1 Narcotic Syntax - Calculated Licentious Extravagance

Dimbiman - Good Morning Eyeball
Ricardo Villalobos - Frank Mueller Melodram
Pile - Perlipop

Baby Ford / Zip / Melchior - Windowshopping
Akufen - Quebec Nightclub
Narcotic Syntax - Reptile Sweat Accelerator
Luciano & Mathew Jonson - Alpine Rocket
Superlongevity 2
Ricardo - The Au Harem Archhimede
Stephan Goldmann - Blood (and I normally don’t care for Stephan G)

Melchior Productions Ltd - No Disco Future
Margaret Dygas - Invisible Circles
Ricardo Villalobos - Vasco EP pt 1
Shackleton - Three EPs

1. artists i had no idea released on perlon: soulphiction, stl, shackleton
2. a lot of these are slower than i thought they would be, which is good
3. tbh jaded euro monologues are a no go for me, looking for soul vox and good times
4. i forgot about the end of "lockdown party" lol -_-

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Sunday, 25 July 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link

stl is so prolific, I could use an opx just for him

brimstead, Sunday, 25 July 2021 16:43 (two years ago) link

four months pass...

Notwithstanding his being singled out for playing that dubious saudi arabian festival, the fact there are now audio samples and a release for the ~new melchior productions ltd~ album has me going bananas.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I actually anticipated an album release, but in the world of my niche tastes and formative experiences, release news doesn’t get bigger than this.
