this album is definitely a heavy reference point for Let it Come Down

I was never really too keen on the 'jam sessions' part of this record, and 'I Dig Love' is never going to be one of my favourite ever George Harrison compositions. I like how he gives you the option between two different versions of 'Isn't It A Pity' (the former, BIG and bombastic - the second, stripped down and more 'cosy'), though.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 29 October 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

funny, i listened to this w/my two year old and the two songs she wanted me to repeat were "what is life" and "my sweet lord"...kids know the hits!

seasonal hugs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 29 October 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

this is such a nice album, even though it can be cheesy (my sweet lord, i dig love). my pick is "beware of darkness".

fennel cartwright, Monday, 29 October 2012 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

:( at people being down on "I Dig Love" - I always really liked it and in fact used it as the opener "title track" to my one-disc mix of this ages and ages ago!

01 - I Dig Love
02 - The Art of Dying
03 - My Sweet Lord
04 - Apple Scruffs
05 - Beware of Darkness
06 - What Is Life
07 - Hear Me Lord
08 - It's Johnny's Birthday
09 - I'd Have You Anytime
10 - Wah Wah
11 - Let It Down
12 - Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll)
13 - Awaiting On You All
14 - All Things Must Pass

err....shit, pasted over something there. That's a one-CD mix of this that I made back in 1998 or 1999, probably one of the first CDs I ever burned. It must have been my preferred listening experience for a while, because looking over it, I can't bring to mind any of the songs I left out (aside from "Isn't It A Pity"). Submitted for your consideration!

What is Life

Also, a write in for "You" since it was recorded during these sessions, but not release until 1975.

For some reason, my vinyl copy of this has only the last two discs, although it does have, damningly, the sleeve for the first disc. The result is that for the first time in at least fifteen years I am sitting through the entire "Apple Jam." Not that I expect it to help with this poll, since I've already voted for "Awaiting On You All," but hey, maybe there is some hidden gem in here (besides "It's Johnny's Birthday")....

Mark G, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 10:03 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, this is pretty much the album Let It Come Down wants to be. Especially something like Isn't It A Pity or Hear Me Lord.

Love I Dig Love, and Isn't It A Pity, but I had a sudden change of heart and went for What Is Life because it is just so much fun. Love the strings that come in at the end.

Solid results! "Beware of Darkness" is definitely a sleeper on this - love the final push where the arrangement thickens out a little on "it can hit you - It can hu-u-urt you" etc.

Glad Isn't It A Pity did well

'Out Of The Blue' getting a vote, 'I Dig Love' and 'Hear Me Lord' getting none!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Thursday, 1 November 2012 01:39 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, hang on, what? "Out of the Blue" is, from what I can remember, the dullest part of the whole jam session. Weird.

only 1 vote for Let it Down? Despite the song inventing Spiritualized? I'm surprised at the top song too - it's great in the context of the album, but never struck me as standing out in particular. I thought Awaiting on You All would walk this, tbh.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Thursday, 1 November 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

Spiritualized pretty much turned to shit once they got into "Let It Down", imo.

"Early takes" has some lovely solo acoustic ATMP songs. Not amazing or anything, but nice.

the single biggest problem with this poll is that every track on discs 1 and 2 is excellent. i couldn't narrow it down past six tracks and just went with 'wah wah'.

05. What Is Life 14
13. Awaiting On You All * 7
03. Wah-Wah 6
02. My Sweet Lord 4
12. Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) 3
08. Let It Down 1

were the six tracks fwiw

Hi dere..

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2012 11:49 (eleven years ago) link

Think of it as being the "Rev9" of this album...

Mark G, Friday, 2 November 2012 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

Anyone else hear similarities between 'Beware of Darkness' and McCartney's 'No More Lonely Nights'?

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 2 November 2012 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

I've always thought Wah-Wah is, probably intentionally ironically, the most McCartney-esque song on here. it's got that oom-pah music-hall rhythm Macca is so fond of, including a pounding "banan-finger" piano part and characteristically fluid bassline

Force Boxman (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 November 2012 17:59 (eleven years ago) link

I love that, at the Concert For George, Paul had to play a bunch of ATMP songs that either he'd rejected for the Beatles, or were digs at him for rejecting those songs.

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 2 November 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

I wonder if Paul really DID buy George his wah-wah? And then refuse to let him use it at all during the "Get Back" sessions...

It's documented somewhere that he, in particular, rejected a bunch of those songs? And that some others are digs at him? Missed it if so.

Paul singing ATMP was one of the best parts of that concert.

timellison, Friday, 2 November 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

In an interview with Crawdaddy magazine, Harrison explained: "That was the song, when I left from the Let It Be movie, there's a scene where Paul and I are having an argument, and we're trying to cover it up. Then the next scene I'm not there and Yoko's just screaming, doing her screeching number. Well, that's where I'd left, and I went home to write 'Wah-Wah.' It had given me a wah-wah, like I had such a headache with that whole argument. It was such a headache."

Force Boxman (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 2 November 2012 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I remember that story. Not about to weigh in on who was the villain in their argument or something. McCartney has been dumped on to a ridiculous degree over the years.

timellison, Friday, 2 November 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

He has, but also, if you watch Let It Be, the thought of being in a band with Paul McCartney takes on a shitty new meaning.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 2 November 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

Don't remember it that way, but I haven't seen it in decades. And anyone can have a bad day, etc.

Do remember that people seemed to view Paul's perspective on those sessions more favorably when this book came out.

It doesn't get any better than the funky ass intro to 'Art of Dying'!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 12 April 2018 16:45 (six years ago) link

I don't think I've told this story before: when I was a teenager my cousin and I made several short movies with my dad's 8mm camera and editor. One was called "The Art of Dying," and the soundtrack (on cassette!) was segments of Harrison's Electronic Sound. The plot was mostly a ripoff of the TV series "Kung Fu," with my cousin and I in our karate uniforms. After fighting his "deadly" german shepherd we died in a field. The End.
