Microwave ovens, C/D?

i have a tiny kitchen and a conventional covection oven that is also a microwave oven. i use it on microwave a few times a week at most.

e.g. for heating the milk for my coffee and for heating readymeals because i am often lazy.

With the exception of boiling a cup of water, I can't think of anything that a microwave does significantly better than another appliance.

leftovers or meals that i have cooked in bulk to be reheated on subsequent nights (i live on my own).

n/a, I usually wok my veg so that wouldn't work (and btw, the wok is a very quick way to cook) and I have this weird prejudice that reheating something in a saucepan is less destructive to taste. In anc case, the extra time it takes for something to cook thusly is time I use to get plates and flatware and napkins ready or time to cook something else or valuable time I spend with a glass of wine comtemplating the indifference of the univers.

for expediting baked potatoes: classic. for exploding eggs: classic.

so why did you bother starting this thread?

I love my little microwave, probably because my mom told me when I was young that we were not getting one because we were not going to have our food zapped by a bolt of lightning.

just seems like you're taking an awfully superior tone about something that nobody is going to claim is a necessary or superior tool. some people just like cooking things a little faster without having to use a bunch of pots and pans.

Advantage: microwave for heating things in their serving dishes, like soups and cheese dip. I dirty enough cookware as it is, no need to dirty a saucepan AND a serving bowl for some soup. Also for reheating leftovers. Microwave popcorn. Heating a mug of water for cocoa. Taking a cold stick of butter and making it spreadable very quickly.

I have a special cubby in my home that is microwave-sized so if I had no micro it would probably be full of spices or something.

I don't mean to sound all snooty about this, n/a. Everybody has their own system in the kitchen and I am totally cool with that, I just can't presonally justify the space a microwave takes compared to the time I would actually use it. Others may and will differ and I want to see what they use theirs for.

Attempting to call out Michael White on a challops is about the most challopsy thing you can do, really, and ultimately doomed to failure.

Depends on who cooked the frozen dinner. Bulk cooking meals to reheat in the microwave later = classic. Microwave TV dinner, mostly dud, but sometimes I can't be bothered to do anything else.

When I was in microwave-free land, I used to heat some foods up with a skillet, which meant that not-necessarily-fried foods became fried foods.

Thanksgiving leftovers were particularly tasty thus.

Fried mashed potatoes are actually amazingly tasty.

I will say that reheating leftovers is something I do in microwaves and it certainly is convenient. I wonder if part of my aversion to them stems from cooking for two or more. When I was a kid and just making quick food for myself, I used them all the time.

libcrypt, I cannot help but see that as mostly a good thing.

They're handy for making bread stale for breadcrumbs fairly quickly but beyond that I'm not really a fan, don't have one at home or at work.

I've never done the baked potato thing and I have made semi-scrambled eggs in one before and found it perfectly palatable and they're okay for reheating stuff but I generally find that they don't cook things 'right'.

I have a multi-functional microwave oven. it rocks. but then I have yet to use a proper oven. :-) i love the microwave/oven machine. like for PIZZAS. (I just started making pizzas, it rocks!)
