So whichever GNR thread has been revived most recently becomes receptacle for all things GNR? Whatevs. I can work with that. Though I just assumed that cheeky thread title meant it was about Axl specifically, or "Welcome" specifically.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:24 (eleven years ago) link
Alright, no biggie. But since you posted a vid of Axl desperately attempting to sing his way through "Welcome..", I thought it would interest you that this particular video has been discussed in that partiular thread for a few days now.
― Mule, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:32 (eleven years ago) link
Good to know! What else is being discussed in other threads, while we're here?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:33 (eleven years ago) link
Well, forget it then. Didn't mean to start anything, though it seems I did..
― Mule, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link
I'm just joshing with you.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link
Ok, we're good.
― Mule, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:37 (eleven years ago) link
I, for one, am ashamed and disappointed in myself for participating in this revive. I'll be taking a brief respite for reflection and to spend time with my family. With Christ's help, I hope that I can avoid any further grievous lapses in judgment.
― Gary Mayonnaise (Old Lunch), Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I'm going to pray on it, too.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:38 (eleven years ago) link
people on this site get up in arms about trivial shit a lot, i've noticed
― Poliopolice, Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:41 (eleven years ago) link
no one got up in arms though? was just a friendly 'hey join the discussion here'

I mean today, in this instance.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 25 October 2012 17:44 (eleven years ago) link
Just another disgusting instance of Axlsplaining imo.
― Gary Mayonnaise (Old Lunch), Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:06 (eleven years ago) link
Just Axl being an Axlhole.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 25 October 2012 18:19 (eleven years ago) link
Been listening to Appetite a bit lately. Nonbelievers, I think if you're willing to listen with new ears, you'll find a phenomenal album of surprising complexity and quality. I think there's only one song that doesn't completely kick ass ("anything goes"). The riffs are unstoppable.
― Poliopolice, Sunday, 28 October 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link
I really don't think appetite would rate any higher in people's unbiased minds than say a motley crue record. (I personally like Mr. Brownstone better than Dr. Feelgood, but this is all stripper music, basically)
― Philip Nunez, Sunday, 28 October 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link
I don't want to see strippers dance to "Mr. Brownstone".
― EZ Snappin, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link
would you rather see axl dance to it?
― Philip Nunez, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link
neither, thanx.
― EZ Snappin, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link
so maybe I like stripper music
;_;

As a huge fan of stripper music I can tell you in my unbiased stripper music mind that Motley Crue doesn't have an album with more than 3 or 4 good songs on it and Appetite has 10.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 17:31 (eleven years ago) link
3 or 4 solid stripper tracks sounds right for appetite. welcome to the jungle, paradise city, mr. brownstone. rocket queen kind of overstays its welcome and sweet child o' mine's lyrics appear to be about pubes, so those two are kind of iffy for the 4th.
― Philip Nunez, Sunday, 28 October 2012 17:43 (eleven years ago) link
You overstay your welcome. BAH. Hello? Night train? It's So Easy? My Michelle?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 28 October 2012 17:47 (eleven years ago) link
Sweet Child is a strip club classic wtf bro
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link
the song is about young axl hiding in some lady's pubes and waiting for heavy periods to pass.welcome to the jungle, indeed.

This conversation makes me wish that I'd let that stripper music poll of mine get off the ground.

Motley Crue is terrible. Some of the worst and worst sounding albums of their ilk from the '80s.
― Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:13 (eleven years ago) link

Motley Crue first album is awesome imo

VG, it was going to be this
"If only more strippers voted." - the Hard Rock and Hair Metal tracks poll nominations thread (Closes September 3rd)
It was a great idea, I thought! But I there's been too much of that type of polling going on these days as far as I'm concerned.
― how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link
Add it to the bottom of WMC's list! By then it'll be midyear next year and it'll give me another poll to look forward to!

the song i feel least happy about on my '80s rock ballot is "Sweet Child O' Mine" while I believe Axl was having a genuine, tender moment, I just can't get over the knowledge that Slash couldn't have given less of a fuck.
Appetite is still a solid album
― da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link
Slash is lying about not liking Sweet Child imo
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:55 (eleven years ago) link
yeah initially i thought "well i can enjoy it FOR slash knocking off such a solid hook even while rolling his eyes at steven adler" but recently the tale has harshed my buzz
― da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link
i used to hear stories about Slash hating "Sweet Child" or coming up with the riff as a joke but then in his memoir and interviews have never seen him expressing any negative opinions of the song so i've started to wonder if it was an urban legend (xpost)
― the man with 2 BRAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINZ! (some dude), Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link
ah i see that story is on the wiki page, i guess it's more confirmed than i'd thought? also lol:
On an interview on Eddie Trunk's New York radio show in May 2006, Axl Rose stated that his original concept for the video focused on the theme of drug trafficking. According to Rose, the video was to depict an Asian woman carrying a baby into a foreign land, only to discover at the end that the child was dead and filled with heroin. This concept was rejected by Geffen Records.
― the man with 2 BRAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINZ! (some dude), Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link
wikipedia credits the "slash made the riff as a joke, then Axl went 'aw that would go well with my love poem" bit to Duff in an '88 hit parader article, though links to some foreign "meanings behind songs" site. xpost
― da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
xp: Reminds me of how the original cover of Appetite was supposed to be a picture of the Challenger explosion.
― how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link
xpost: slash talks about it in his autobiography. called it "circus music" or something.

he wildly contradicts himself about it
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link
the impression i got was that slash didn't like it at the time because it was kind of corny, but over time, he's grown to enjoy it.
― Poliopolice, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link
riff is corny, izzy lifts it to glory anyway, solos rule
