Actually that FOTL show is probably going to be just the distraction I need that night

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 24 October 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

this is my thought as well, but my wife seems less convinced

I'M THE ONLY ON (jjjusten), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

she may also be making accurate predictions abt my level of drinking in a tension of election/FOTL/celebration of expected election outcome combo and thinking that she doesn't want to end the night by cramming 185 pounds of dead weight into a passenger seat.

Anybody been to Playing the Building, either in MPLS or elsewhere? Always been a fascinating idea to me, glad to see it's here. Wondering if it's worth 10 bones.

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah me too, haven't really heard

U.S. State Department, Office of Rare Psych (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

It is not, in my opinion worth the 10 dollars to see the exhibit on its own. If you go during one of the performance nights/days maybe, but in my experience the charm wore off in about four minutes.

chr1sb3singer, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

I guess it's 'pay what you want' on Thursdays. Maybe I'll go then. Give like 5 and some change.

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

Or more accurately, 'pay what you can', but seriously, 10 dollars is a fair bit of money for me, SO I CAN SAY THAT

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 19 December 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

My band is playing with these guys tonight. Help me think of something friendly to say to them, because this kind of music leaves me stone cold (although I think they're sorta good at it, I guess?)

"Good show tonight."
"Can I get you a beer?"
"What gear do you play with?"

etc etc etc keep it basic

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 27 December 2012 18:47 (eleven years ago) link

in some shots i swear the singer dude was manny from black books. also a warning sign.

arby's, Thursday, 27 December 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

"Saw you up there."

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Thursday, 27 December 2012 18:53 (eleven years ago) link

"you guys are really tight"

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 27 December 2012 18:55 (eleven years ago) link

They were actually pretty good in an every-song-sounds-like-Pearl-Jam way. Kinda weird to see the Eddie Vedder voice coming from the drummer.
"Hi." "Good show tonight." was the extent of our interaction.

Rocking Disco Santa (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

"Seen your video."

Rocking Disco Santa (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 27 December 2012 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

NOW THAT WAS A GODDAMN SHOW. At the Turf Club last night, the Blind Shake continued their tradition of not failing to not disappoint, and the Birthday Suits caused me to grin with my mouth wide open and my eyes bugging out, a sure indicator of quality. Also found The STNNNG excellent, much improved since my last sighting of 'em in late 2010. TWIN CITIES ROCK MUSIC PERSONNEL: YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT.

New STNNNG album forthcoming, recorded with Albini, vinyl mastered at Abbey Road

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:18 (eleven years ago) link

Well now that should be a thing. My only nitpick is that I feel strongly that they ought to be called The STNNNG, but the singer's taste in footwear more than makes up for this tiny flaw.

*rad hug eomticon* (Control Z), Monday, 7 January 2013 17:33 (eleven years ago) link

Originally was The Stunning, until little known 90s Irish altrock band of the same name protested

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 January 2013 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

Perfect. (And what a trove of STNNNG lore I seem to have found here. You'd almost think that one of them posts on this very board now and then.)

Ha ha yeah I guess chris should tell it

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, January 19th we will be hosting the tenth installment of our "Rock 'n' Roll Breakfast Series." And it's a big one. We will be hosting not one... not two... but three fantastic acts (all of whom are celebrating brand new albums) while you chow down on free pastries and coffee. Please join us for a foot-stompin' good time!

TREEHOUSE ROCK 'N' ROLL BREAKFAST SERIES VOL. 10
Saturday, January 19
10 AM Sharp
Triple Record Release Show featuring CHARLIE PARR, THE BLACK TWIG PICKERS, and NATHAN BOWLES

Charlie Parr
Fans of local and roots music and friends of the store are certainly familiar with Charlie's incredible guitar and banjo finger-picking and raw honesty. He's simply one of the greatest active practitioners operating in the folk-blues realm. His previous album When the Devil Goes Blind was released on our in-house label Nero's Neptune and is probably the single best-selling album in the nearly twelve-year history of our store. He has a brand new album called Barnswallow, which he'll be unveiling with record release shows next weekend at the Cedar Cultural Center and at this very special in-store performance. Getting to see Charlie perform in any setting is a treat, but as an added bonus he'll have some of his friends with him...

The Black Twig Pickers
This unique Appalachian folk ensemble has been making music together for over a decade. In that time, they have recorded collaborations with Charlie Parr and the late, great Jack Rose, and released many albums of their own. Their mix of old-time folk/country/gospel/bluegrass with modern drone and improvisational music (the Pickers' Mike Gangloff founded the legendary drone-folk group Pelt with the aforementioned Rose) has earned them a devoted international following. Their brand new album Rough Carpenters will be released by the prestigious Thrill Jockey label on February 19, but Thrill Jockey has agreed to let us sell copies a full month in advance for this in-store!

Nathan Bowles
Nathan is a member of The Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, & Pigeons. He is a virtuoso banjo player and his debut solo instrumental album A Bottle, A Buckeye has just been released by local label Soft Abuse Records. He'll be doing a solo set to begin the festivities on Saturday morning. Arrive early to check him out!

As always, we will be providing FREE coffee from Caffetto and delicious breakfast treats from local pastry chef Joanna Biessener (Solera, La Belle Vie).

Thanks,
The Treehouse Gang
