yeah, from what i've heard so far i'm excited about this album

this is ridiculously good

beautiful but ominous at the same time, there's this sense of dread that's at odds with the gorgeous vocals, and it creates this really cool tension

I'm noticing much less ducking/sidechain compression on the two youtube clips I've seen/heard.

don't like the part where he says his music since passed me by has zero outside influences (yeah right), just seconds ago he was going on about how the modern love guys gave him stuff that he then copied.

the artwork has the same problem.

wow this album is kind of mindblowing. i don't care what he's saying about influences (you could make all sorts of claims about what's going on here) as long as he keeps making tunes at this level of quality he gets a free pass imo

Passed Me By/We Stay Together/Luxury Problems is a remarkable hot streak. I agree, he can talk as much nonsense as he wants!

This is good, but way uneven IMO. Some of the tracks are jaw-droppingly cool, and some fall totally flat. The vocals don't always work; in fact, I think they usually don't. They feel shoehorned in. (They're also of a style/vibe I don't really like.)

I wish the vocals always worked as well as they do on "Leaving"

But that creamy/oh-so-soft/drenched-in-reverb female vocal thing is still not my bag

this is rather wonderful. and i was thoroughly bored by his previous two albums. the vocals provide such a great contrast to the music.

I've seen several folks praising that contrast between the vocals and the music... My question is, why would you *want* something to contrast beats that deep/dark and gritty? For me, they just distract from the kind of inarticulable graininess of the underlying tracks; they feel too much like signposts, too eager to signify.

Because the vocals provide contrast, making the graininess noticeable even after several tracks, creating a gestalt whole that is more than the sum?

I can imagine that happening for sure (the gestalt whole that exceeds the sum), but I don't think this record achieves it... But I do also think I need to give it a little more time/effort.

because that was what his previous albums were and i found them immensely dull

I wasn't in the right frame of mind for this record last week; listening again, I'm liking it a lot more.

I knew you would see the light. This is is one of them albums that gives you more every time you come back to it.

Faith In Strangers is brilliant, feels like a midpoint of Luxury Problems and Passed Me By but with more shades of grey.

little overrated at this point, i think

hesitated on checking it out but enjoying the new one quite a bit. think I'm getting more of a whiff of goth from some of these songs than I've had before (bass playing on the title track especially). agree that it might not be as striking and as alien as previous stuff - feels like it engages with more mundane human experiences maybe? that's not necessarily a weakness from my pov though.

That's what pulled me in after hearing that song, only to realise that qwas not particularly representative.

It's a fine EP, but it continues the trend of being nowhere near as good as Luxury Problems.

Was kind of meh on this earlier, relistening to this now as I am relistening to 2019 albums while trying to make my end of year list and really enjoying this now.

It is really great, kinda relaxing played low. One of the best of the year I reckon.

yeah it's easily my fav of his in years... just has a solid tone and vibe about it and is consistent from top to bottom

It's a good one, but definitely feels a bit front loaded. Take the first half and the closing track and you have a stunning EP though. Curious to hear the material he abandoned before this.
