Anger Management and Kutcher-era Two And A Half Men are basically the Beady Eye and Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds of stupid sitcoms

gives me hope for the new season.

so much more repellent than I had even imagined.

My boss loves this show. And hates unions. I assume union-hating middle managers are the show's intended audience.

Stay classy Chevy.

Maybe he had an episode and thought he was back on SNL doing a sketch with Richard Pryor.

That's kinda the only thing that makes any sense, given the facts as presented.

who adds that Chase has grown increasingly unhappy with the dark direction of his character, the bigoted Pierce Hawthorne.

wait, he's grown increasingly unhappy with his character's bigotry?

i don't really hate CC like a lot of folks do (although that story isn't helping) and think his character has been plenty funny/worthwhile throughout the show, but i really don't know why they haven't just written him out of the show unless his contract makes it legally difficult. he's prob the most expensive member of the cast member, his name recognition means nothing for the show's (lack of) ratings, and it would fit fine into the show's arc for the old contentious guy to die or just finally leave the group for good.

my mansplain songz (some dude), Sunday, 21 October 2012 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

Pretty much my thoughts. I would've preferred that he was let go before Harmon was fired, assuming their feud had anything at all to do with Sony's decision.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Sunday, 21 October 2012 01:14 (eleven years ago) link

so I guess Harmon wasn't Chevrolet's only problem

Might be summat to do with overseas sales. Both the UK channels it's been aired on have trailed it as "Comedy legend Chevy Chase goes back to college!" He's pretty much the only cast member who's known outside the USA, possibly excepting Ken Jeong (or, according to the UK adverts, "that guy off The Hangover).

couple at least. have only watched one disc so far

Weird thing is that I found out that Ganz went to my alma mater, and wrote for the campus humor mag that a buncha guys I knew started before she headed off to the Onion

Thanks, good to know re: Harmon. I didn't know if he'd been shitcanned before or after the commentaries were to be recorded.

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 22 October 2012 05:13 (eleven years ago) link

The whole 'he is the only famous one' is bullshit. Almost no-one from American sitcoms are known beforehand and only very recently has it seemed to have changed from 'this is funny so we imported it' to 'you slightly remember this guy from roseanne? well yr parents might! she was in a shitty movie about indie music with someone from superbad; superbad was funny right?! whiney wants to drown her and she sings in elf! watch this!'

Harmon was fired as showrunner but he still works for the show as some sort of producer with a title and a paycheck but no real creative control. I'd like to think that he'll show up on the season 4 commentaries and that they'll be a thing of beauty.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:24 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think that's true? thought he was going to be offered that sort of position but jumped ship completely

I have done bad. I love my pj's. (zachlyon), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:39 (eleven years ago) link

I think the deal was that he had the option of being some sort of active-yet-neutered participant in the show but opted to just sit back and play videogames because he was gonna get paid either way. I think he's still a producer.

false pie promises (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 October 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

it's free money and he doesn't have to (and won't be asked to) do anything. Afaik he took the title and ran

Clay, Monday, 22 October 2012 12:44 (eleven years ago) link

And I don't blame him for deciding against being actively involved. He would've been relegated to a position akin to being a sex consultant to your ex's new boyfriend.

"I think he's still a producer." = "His name is still in the credits."

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link

chevy and jeong were definitely drags on season 3, since they're the biggest names they had to be shoehorned into stuff despite being entirely irrelevant after s2

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

I guess that's the hard part of doing a live-action community building - it's not like simpsons writers have to find something for every harry shearer character to do in every episode. deadwood season 3 had a similar overpopulation problem.

da croupier, Monday, 22 October 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

`yeah cy tolliver had clearly outlived his usage and while the brian cox arc clearly was gonna serve a purpose in season 4 as it is it's just so much agonizing filler (have no problems w/ any aspect of the hearst arc though i know some ppl hate how it resolved). sopranos sorta had this problem also, giving plotlines to tertiary characters and ruining their charm in the process (vito is the nadir of this but part of me is lukewarm w/ bobby bacala's fleshing out as well). mad men has managed to avoid this - weiner is pretty ruthless about jettisoning characters if they've outlived their use or the story demands it (though january jones is still out there, eating bugles). the wire as far as i can tell also managed to avoid this problem while doing the biggest community building of any live action show i can recall.

balls, Monday, 22 October 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

I think the deal was that he had the option of being some sort of active-yet-neutered participant in the show

Neither NBC nor Sony have yet contacted him to tell him that he's not actually showrunner anymore, so that speaks to the level of "options" he has
