And yeah I cocked my head to the side and went "really? really??" when I realized his growl was literally a g followed by some r's.

i haven't really read this thread but the biggest problem i had w/ this was how bad of an actor the boy was. also w/ the racist taunts it started to become like one of those absurdist snl skits except instead of it being funny it was just really really tiresome. also the ending was >_<

Dag dude. I thought the kid was fine insofar as he was supposed to be terrified or uncomfortable in pretty much every scene he's in. The taunts started to make me laugh about halfway through as it became clearer they were endearing and they got more creative. And what was wrong with the ending?? I mean yeah a little sentimental obviously but satisfying I thought.

This poster http://www.wildaboutmovies.com/images_7/GranTorinoPoster.jpg is the sum total of what I know about the film. So what's it about? Is he protecting his car from being stolen?

Yes.

I've not read any of this thread. Is this film a biopic based on "Il Grande Torino", the nickname given to the Torino football team in the Italian post-war period, usually acknowledged as one of the greatest club level teams in association football history, who all died in the Superga airplane tragedy in 1949? Is Eastwood playing Valentino Mazzola?

SCARF LOL

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 30 January 2009 01:54 (fifteen years ago) link

if you squint at the poster you can see osteoporotic gran torino in her head scarf hunched over the steering wheel, clint plays her taciturn son brian.

estela, Friday, 30 January 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago) link

this was a ridiculous and preposterous picture, and i felt the only "real" character outside of the misanthrope CE plays and the most interesting one was the girl Sue...everything else was just perpetuating a stereotype
but i have to admit i was entertained, it was almost self-parodic at times

one month passes...

some rly bad acting in this movie (basically everyone who isn't eastwood)

this is one of the worst films I can remember seeing.

so many stereotypes, awful acting, really clunky lines, massively convoluted themes with no point to any of them, tacked on violence. so fucking awful.

it was like "denis" with violence and racism. what was the point of the whole thing? this kid just needs a damn good stint of hard work and to call some people jerks and assholes, that'll straighten him out. maybe if racist old men ran this world we'd be in a lot better shape, they call it like they see it!

Local Garda, Monday, 23 March 2009 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

best thing about this film was it had someone shouting "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALT" in it

was it worse than "grumpy old men in space"?

I liked "grumpy old men in space"

Past a Diving Jeter (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

^^ so did my parents, but I suspect part of its appeal to them was "seeing themselves reflected in the characters". I actually haven't seen it. I just like calling it "Grumpy old men in space"

Sounds like I was right to dismiss this as a piece of shit. When all of my racist older relatives went on and on about how great it was, I knew to avoid it like the plague.

I've successfully avoided that one too.

This film is fantastic. It made me cry, as few films do.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

This movie is certainly some kind of object. Given its status as a hit, by Eastwood standards, I'd go so far as to say it might stand aside Network and JFK as examples of "zeitgeist goes batshit."

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

Though neither as batshit nor as zeitgeist as those two, obv.

this movie is awful

clint eastwood is a truly terrible filmmaker

"positive power of racism" theme is kind of a new one tho

s1ocki, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole movie reminded of the truly terrible hilary swank's family stuff in million dollar baby... just such ungenerous, lazy, self-righteous writing.

s1ocki, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I sort of agree and disagree.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i did like the growling!

s1ocki, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:32 (fourteen years ago) link

the way the slutty granddaughter nosing around after the car gets her comeuppance for being a terribly-drawn character in the end is just so gross

s1ocki, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:33 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah this was pretty bad. even the best parts seemed like a cliche we've seen 1000 times before. old guy tutoring boy.. liked the scene with the hairdresser though. lazy ending too. and Eastwood's acting was the low point. (i* hated the growling)

*heh, that looks cool with the bb code. i mean before it appears cursive err.

Ludo, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:34 (fourteen years ago) link

When a director with Eastwood's past makes a back-to-basics move like Gran Torino, he's reduced to first principles: vigilantism and a creeping case of the cutes.

Bud Huxtable (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 8 June 2009 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't quite fathom how anyone thought this anything other than hilarious/terrible. Most people I know who saw it all expected something more serious but all just gave in to it and had to laugh.

And then the few moments of bad things really jar because you're all "that doesnt really have any place in a comedy does it?"

Suedey 2, Monday, 8 June 2009 13:59 (fourteen years ago) link

his plan at the end was pretty dumb too

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:50 (fourteen years ago) link

main problem was the devilish gang bangers who are dead set on having a kid clearly not cut out to be useful in criminal life, in their gang, up to the point of raping a family member to prove the point, somehow. the whole thing turns on this motivation and it's really stupid.
