Here's that mashup of songs we had to sing in a school play when I was, what? 8 or something. Seems to be a mix of Old Iron, Lily of Laguna and Two Little Boys
Any old iron, any old ironAny any any old ironYou look sweetHow about your feet? She's the only queen Laguna knowsI know she likes me, I know she likes me, I know she likes meShe is the Lily of LagunaAnd then there were two little boys
Think the theme for the play must have been music hall or something

In the 1960s the song was performed by a British blackface group on The Black and White Minstrel Show.[6] Afterwards, political correctness made this genre and the lyrics of the song unacceptable for public broadcasting.[7] The song was transformed in a number of ways: the racial imagery was replaced with lines referencing sailor hats, docks, and lollipops

incredible we'd have sung that song (albeit drastically edited) in the mid 80s.

For a while I was convinced that that "What a life" finished up with the fade out to "Save a prayer for the morning after"
It doesn't.
WOuld have been more interesting if it had though.

ledge's seamless seque is true to the subtle melancholy aspects, which originally were upfront, via lyrics: in Meet Me In St. Louis, Judy Garland is singing it to her little sister, after their father tells them he's moving the whole family to New York. This will be their last Christmas with their friends here. But the studio decreed the lyrics too Debbie Downer for Christmas, and/or too damn obvious. We do get "next year troubles will be far awaaay"--maybe we'll have put all this behind us, but a distance is involved, however it goes. The composer talks about it in Fresh Air's archive.

Of freedom and of pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world
D-d-d-danger, watch behind you There's a stranger out to find you nowWhen they do I'll be right behind you
So glad we've almost made it So sad they had to fade it Everybody wants to rule the world
