Earworm mashups: the thread for having multiple songs stuck in your head

MarkoP, Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link

Whoops. Let me try that again

MarkoP, Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos

And everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed...

Here's that mashup of songs we had to sing in a school play when I was, what? 8 or something. Seems to be a mix of Old Iron, Lily of Laguna and Two Little Boys

Any old iron, any old iron
Any any any old iron
You look sweet
How about your feet?
She's the only queen Laguna knows
I know she likes me, I know she likes me, I know she likes me
She is the Lily of Laguna
And then there were two little boys

Think the theme for the play must have been music hall or something

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_of_Laguna

In the 1960s the song was performed by a British blackface group on The Black and White Minstrel Show.[6] Afterwards, political correctness made this genre and the lyrics of the song unacceptable for public broadcasting.[7] The song was transformed in a number of ways: the racial imagery was replaced with lines referencing sailor hats, docks, and lollipops

incredible we'd have sung that song (albeit drastically edited) in the mid 80s.

For a while I was convinced that that "What a life" finished up with the fade out to "Save a prayer for the morning after"

It doesn't.

WOuld have been more interesting if it had though.

The way that you hold me
Whenever you hold me
There's some kind of magic inside you
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are

it's a wonderful night for a moondance
with the stars up above in your eyes
a fantabulous night to make romance
'neath the splendour of october skies

and all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
and all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush

spiderman, spiderman, friendly neighbourhood spiderman......

And I'm floating in the most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
Blackbird fly
Blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
Everytime we say goodbye, I wonder why a little

Stuck in my head in '78:

My love is strong enough
To last when things are rough
It's magic
You say that I waste my time
But I can't get you off my mind
You should be dancing, yeah
Dancing, yeah

ledge's seamless seque is true to the subtle melancholy aspects, which originally were upfront, via lyrics: in Meet Me In St. Louis, Judy Garland is singing it to her little sister, after their father tells them he's moving the whole family to New York. This will be their last Christmas with their friends here. But the studio decreed the lyrics too Debbie Downer for Christmas, and/or too damn obvious. We do get "next year troubles will be far awaaay"--maybe we'll have put all this behind us, but a distance is involved, however it goes. The composer talks about it in Fresh Air's archive.

Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

D-d-d-danger, watch behind you
There's a stranger out to find you now
When they do I'll be right behind you

So glad we've almost made it
So sad they had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world
