we have an i love film and and i love books and people still talk about movies and books on ilx, a sub board doesn't segregate anything really. politics is an unruly enough subject that people won't abide, i don't think. and what do you do about all the legacy threads that get bumped? i don't want to move them all, fuck that.

I think we have to look at the threads as a short-term stimulus package that can be removed when the ilx economy is stronger

iatee, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

with goole the Paul Ryan who asks for stimulus dough for his district

yeah this is pretty frustrating. imo this is how it should be:

- a single horserace thread that encompasses the daily goings-on of the campaigns and also covers the debates and the chatter surrounding them. because the debates and their fallout are directly related to the horseracey stuff, i don't see why we need separate threads. so, one thread for all the election stuff - after a certain number of posts or obvious milestones, these can be locked and new ones started, with numbers in the title to help keep them straight and links in the first post for continuity.

- a single non-election national politics thread like we've been doing for years. this is actually going fine except there was some confusion when dan started what was supposed to be a new horserace thread but put "politics" in the title. the one aero started is pretty huge/old so maybe lock both and start a new politics thread with a better title

- agree on the "scared of romney winning" being unnecessary. back when obama looked like a lock it was more of a place for people who didn't really keep up with the news to go and vent or whatever but recently there's been a lot of overlap between that and the general election thread. suggest nixing this one

- don't really care about the lol/right-wing threads but appreciate it being kept out of the politics threads, so would continue these as is

otm, I will believe goole when he suggests we delete the right-wing craziness thread but until then he is not a credible ilx conservative xp

iatee, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

it is truly in the spirit of us politics that facing the problem of too many politics threads goole started another thread

Mordy, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

lol @ 'hey these other sub boards have failed at every measure they were attempting, let's do it for us politics'

balls, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

maybe we should agree to roll a general thread weekly like ILNFL

- 8th grade
- gym
- boys vs. balls wiffleball
- playing in the field
- coach turns around toward the boys in the field, rubs the wiffleball on his crotch and says "CHEEEEEEEEZE BALL!!!" whilst making uncomfortably prolonged eye contact with me

sorry, that just came to mind after typing "jeez balls"

again the benefit of multiple threads is you get multiple discussions at once, and it's pretty clear that there is enough demand for political blather at this point for multiple discussions at once to be a good idea. I think organizing the threads makes sense when you have people posting links and bumping old threads, but in general if people are talking about stuff then 'the message board is working', who cares about how neat it looks.

xp to preclusterfuck

iatee, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:17 (eleven years ago) link

sorry btw to everyone I confused because I couldn't remember the word "election"

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

- boys vs. balls wiffleball

that was supposed to be boys vs. girls but whatever, the same spirit prevails

x-post

Can't that thread title be changed or that thread locked?

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

this isn't really a permanent problem it's just that we had a perfect storm of that accident w the rollover of the campaign thread + the increase in political posts because of the election endgame anyway + that anomalous i'm-scared thread which is really part of point 2 i guess

six years pass...

ye killed a good message board ye know that right

godfellaz (darraghmac), Sunday, 9 June 2019 23:22 (four years ago) link

I ween ye nae got that right. the reasons for it are more garbled up than just the politics threads. tis the awful need of reading and writing that's more than the young bloods can stand.
