Daphni - Jiaolong LP (new record from dan snaith/caribou)

CD of this just arrived yesterday, I've heard about half of it already so know what to expect, but looking forward to opening it up.

Is any of it as immedately "!" as his Emeralds or Sinkane remixes?

liked the emeralds remix (maybe less than others tho), haven't heard the sinkane remix, but i'd say my favorite caribou remixes (virgo four and junior boys) are a bit more immediate than this. but again, those opening three tracks are really really really awesome and maybe just as good for different reasons

Bit gutted that Mapfumo didn't make it onto the LP. Probably my favourite from the 12"'s but from what I've read it's pretty much a cover/remix.

it's a 12.5 min long edit of a relatively famous thomas mapfumo track, hard to imagine it was sanctioned or that it's easy to obtain rights for that type of thing

I really enjoyed this, more than I've enjoyed any Caribou output. As Caribou, for someone essentially making melodic electronic music, he isn't actually particularly good at melody*. He's evidently a lot better when just putting out straight bangers.

*Contrast to Four Tet who is amazing at it.

I love Yes, I Know to death (what's the sample from, by the way?) but haven't really got into the new ones yet.

The Niama Makalou remix is A+++ though. The ending is spectacular.

I had the opposite reaction to Matt. I think Caribou's great at melody and layered arrangements. By comparison Daphni's club bangers are one-dimensional - only half the album takes off.

I'm still not really feeling this. It sounds griddy and lifeless compared to the obvious Four Tet (the two of them are starting to merge in my head, except Kieran is hotter but Dan has better shirts.) Which is a shame, because I do generally like lots of Caribou. (Though, that said, I *love* Caribou when I hear one track in the midst of a mix, and I'm all "best thing ever!" but I lag a bit in the midst of whole albums.)

Maybe I should listen to more of the remixes.

I love "griddy". Such a perfect description. With Caribou I can't work out how he does it but here, as someone with zero expertise on music software, I feel like, oh yeah, now he's bringing the snare in - count 16 bars - oh here's the sample. Which is fine and great on the dancefloor, obviously, but the appeal wanes over the course of an album.

I think it might also be that I tend to prefer Daphni's source material better in the original. While with Four Tet, he has a way of taking one forgotten tiny riff of a bigger piece that you wouldn't even notice in the original, and building it up into this sparkly amazing sonic cathedral.

Think, from what I've listened to of Jiaolong thus far, that I'm going to side with DL and WCC here; saying that, I do like the sense of fun and frippery that runs through what I've heard - some of the vocal samples and daft noises are like dance music with a massive smile on its face.

But the Daphni record isn't really aiming for the same think as Four Tet. This feels squarely aimed at the dancefloor in a way that even the trackiest bits of Pink don't. This is a functional record but it's very good at it.

yes, they always get bandied together but i don't think i've ever played a four get record in a dj set while i'd happily play lots of daphni. as daphni, he definitely has a great sense of club dynamics while also doing something a little different to anyone else and finding great sure material few producers would think of utilising.

FWIW I think Four Tet's understanding of club dynamics is very good as well but he seems less interested in exploring that on his own records.

i don't have anything very eloquent to say but i will say i was a bit disappointed by how much of it had been previously released.

The tracks which were already released as singles are quite expensive (30 euros for the 12" w/ Ye Ye, 20 euros for Ne Noya on discogs), and were a little hard to get, so it's nice that they are now also available on the LP.

Watched the Beats Rhymes and Life documentary recently and was surprised to learn the high pitched tone that plays throughout 'Lyrics To Go' was actually a sample Q-Tip took of the vocal climx of Minnie Ripperton's 'Inside My Love'. I didn't realize just how of their production was done by Q-Tip.

As for Four Tet vs Caribou, I wish he would have made the album a little more headphone oriented. Still for the guy who has the attitude to call EDM a barfsplosion, this album as one of the best this year shows he has the abilities to back up that attitude.

Is that even legal?

It's weird because the ground-up enthusiasm for various Daphni remixes has been pretty big. I had no idea he was actually Caribou until relatively recently.

This album is pretty good but "Yes I Know" is a total all-time jam; I heard it on some RA or Beats in Space mix a year ago and have been pretty hardcore in love with it since.

I may have been so carried away on the wave of joy upon hearing Yes I Know for the first time that I slightly overrated the album, although even the more functional, fillery tracks don't feel especially skippable. I do find myself wishing it was all mixed together though.

The records are labelled (a) and (c) where they should be (b) and (d) - a bit weird but made up for by the DL card embedded with wildflower seeds that you can plant after using.

People not following releases on Jiaolong and complaining about missing out on great releases, WAT??

Lex, I'm surprised that you of all people thinks you need a CD in the post to alert him to a new release. PR did send out some CDs but indie labels have to be selective. (I've missed out on good stuff from the same PR in the past)

i didn't mean this album or PR specifically (though i wasn't PRed this either) - i meant the general buzz/conversation around a release that makes me aware that something exists (which most of the time doesn't come from PRs or labels). like what happened for the daphni album actually.

I keep thinking of this as being like Audion but then it occurs to me that I'm only thinking that for biographical reasons.

For me it's Four Tet, but both for biographical and sonic reasons.

not really feeling this, but i like the four tet record a lot though since we're comparing them. that one has nice rough edges but sounds much more composed. i get that this record is supposed to be quick loops and modular synth jams for dj gigs, which is cool but most of it doesn't stick for me.

Of the four "we are going to dance in a club" albums I've bought this year (Orbital, Talabot, Four Tet and this), this feels like the most fun (and also the most functional). Four Tet's is the most cosmic, Orbital's the most pop, and Talabot is a nice middle ground between them all. For me, anyway.

Love the occasionally African and Brazilian vibes that appear through this.

Actually I got the Blondes album as well which is also pretty "we are going to dance in a club" too but it never interested me as much as these. I almost use it as ambient.

Jiaolong also best captures that "last track feels like going home" vibe.

The Four Tet album doesn't feel particularly clubby to me, quite the opposite actually, it really feels like a living room record, although a couple of tracks near the end might work in a club.

Jialong is definitely the most functional of the four though. I still find myself wishing it was mixed together.

Yeah, Pink is feeling less clubby and more living room the more I... Play it in my living room.

i'm not blown away by this but i'm into "light" the most, the hi-hats and flute riff are great

Yeah that one is my second favourite, after Yes I Know.

Really enjoying this. Sometimes I feel like Dan Snaith is my musical avatar, not exactly my "favorite artist" so much as the one that best marries all of the aspects of my musical taste, sense of groove, aesthetic, etc.

His recent Fabriclive mix is entirely his own stuff and is excellent.

Isn't most of that mix meant to be on the new album?

My guess is that it'll sound a lot better mixed together than as discrete album tracks but this is a bit of a truism with dance albums anyway.

Listened to the album now and it's fine, it's good, but fucking hell *every track* bar one is already on the Fabric mix. Except the mix has a load of other good stuff in there in about the same amount of space and is just a much more exciting and varied and dynamic listen. Whereas an extra three or four minutes of 'Face To Face' or 'Hey Drum' add nothing at all really. It's a string of good-to-great club tracks laid out alongside each other.

Hmm, I wanna hear that then. I think the new one works really nicely as a mix, agree the tracks are sort of static but I enjoy the trance-inducing aspect of that.
