Okay, a formal announcement was just made so I can say that I will be on the organizing committee for the LA conference. :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link

agree w/ rev while also excited for this -- NYC this year was my first time, and towards the end of the weekend i'd heard murmurs that it was just going to be back in Seattle next year, which i probably wouldn't be able to manage, but at least this way i'd have a good chance of being able to go to NYC or maybe Cleveland.

two weeks pass...

Okay! The LA crew has just issued its CFP and general details:

right on, already thinking of proposal ideas.

I've skipped that step and I'm jumping right to bracing myself for rejection.

Bound by Habitrails (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 02:58 (eleven years ago) link

Are there going to be more papers this time around? I really want to present at one of these sometime. Hoping that being a PhD student at UCLA rather than a Master's student in Canada might help too. Though I'm sure actually having an interesting topic wouldn't hurt either, right?

three weeks pass...

i've been invited to take part in the "critical karaoke" segment of EMP LA! i get to play a song that's relevant to my topic and present over it, very quickly. :-)

i'll be talking about "baby boomers and the urban problem" -- with the mamas and the papas' "twelve-thirty (young girls are coming to the canyon)" as the centerpiece.

les yper-fem (get bent), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 22:16 (eleven years ago) link

this seems like as opportune a time to ask as any: does anyone have any idea what is going on with new york?

katherine, Thursday, 17 January 2013 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

some people are gonna talk about stuff? at nyu. i think. but no call for papers.

scott seward, Thursday, 17 January 2013 04:03 (eleven years ago) link

and also that sounds cool, jbr! watch out for ned's hard-hitting questions. he's relentless.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 17 January 2013 05:00 (eleven years ago) link

ah, awesome! i missed the deadline for LA, so i think i'll submit something to seattle -

geeta, Thursday, 17 January 2013 05:04 (eleven years ago) link

Indeed, go for it!

As I know what the full lineup for the conference in LA -- given I helped choose it and all -- it's a firecracker. Wish you could all be here! I will be the social media face of the conference via Tumblr and Twitter -- more on that soon!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2013 07:04 (eleven years ago) link

New Orleans paper submission issue is in the link posted November 27, 2012. It says in part:

Please send abstracts of individual papers, with 50-word bios, to Joel Dinerstein (jdinerst AT tulane.edu) or Karen Celestan (kcelestan AT tulane.edu) or GulfSouth AT Tulane.edu. Deadline for proposals is February 13, 2013. Panel proposals (90 minutes) or special types of panels (roundtable, performance) should include overview, individual papers or presentations, and bios. We welcome unorthodox proposals aimed explicitly at a general interest audience. Registration is free for presenters and the public.

So nothing from NYU re the NYC one?

curmudgeon, Thursday, 17 January 2013 15:56 (eleven years ago) link

My understanding is there was no CFP for New York, but presentations will be made.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago) link

hmmmmmm

curmudgeon, Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago) link

Wait. So the NYC one isn't a normal pop con? Is it more restrained than the others? Is it better to go to one of the other ones?

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

You should of course come to LA why because special.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

I decided to email Eric Weisbard of the EMP Pop Conference about NYC 2013 and here's what he said, in part:

This is New York’s theme: “After the Deluge,” The New York City installment of the 2013 EMP Pop Conference will be held at New York University April 18th-19th, 2013, sponsored by the Department of Performance Studies and the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. The two-day event will feature a set of discussions and events curated by a distinguished program committee of scholars and journalists. Our postdiluvian title is meant to be open-ended. It will invite reflection on music and the city and region before, during, and after Superstorm Sandy. It will draw focus to the much smaller scale of this year’s event, after the IASPM/EMP

extravaganza of 2012. And lastly, it will invite consideration of how we handle — as critics and consumers — the excesses and scarcities of music in our present moment. There will be no open call for papers but please get in touch with the conference organizer Tavia Nyong’o at

tavia.nyongo AT nyu.edu if you are interested in participating or attending.

curmudgeon, Friday, 18 January 2013 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

Kind of a more limiting theme although they note they want it open-ended

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 February 2013 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

Cleveland presentations (like NY) were by invitation only

http://rockhall.com/education/inside-the-classroom/university-program/emp-cle-2013/

broad themes posted:

As the world generates new modes of listening and sharing music, how do we map traditional and/or forge new organizational structures on consumption and appreciation?

· We will consider the value of list-making, curating and canon-making within a musical space that can be molded by each individual listener and evaluate the role of tastemakers in these new dynamics.

· Topics will include pedagogy; club booking and live series; institutional canon-making, such as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and EMP; and list-making.

specific schedule will be out soon

I'm excited. Fellow DCers with a New Orleans dj on go-go; New Orleans bounce music; Sothern experimental music. I gotta get moving on my presentation.

goddamnit I hate that I have to do this but does anywhere know where I can get a ticket to the NYC conference, it is apparently sold out

katherine, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 20:36 (eleven years ago) link

Just lure the AP fans, lemminglike, away with claims of being able to buy her beer later.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, waiting list only on that link for NYC. They should be streaming all the EMP conferences online or at least recording all of these every year (it always seems to be discussed but does not seem to happen). Not sure what the costs or tech issues would be.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 20:49 (eleven years ago) link

kind of feel like there could have been a warning, you know, "BY THE WAY THIS IS LIKELY TO ACTUALLY SELL OUT"

New Orleans one now says space is limited, register early

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 9 April 2013 23:37 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i think this is an unforeseen side effect of having just one panel at a time

maura, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 01:25 (eleven years ago) link

Not a side effect of having AP speak? New Orleans is doing one panel at a time on Friday, but having 2 at a time on Saturday, unlike NY.

I think Seattle is just doing one day--Saturday.

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't even realize there was limited availability. The Seattle ones I've just been able to walk in an hour or two before the opening and register.

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

nyc one is only two days, thursday and friday, one panel at a time. AP tickets are a separate thing.

maura, Wednesday, 10 April 2013 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

fuck it. buying one pass, katherinestasaph at gmail.

katherine, Friday, 12 April 2013 05:21 (eleven years ago) link

(unfortunately I can't afford to pay much for it because you know the entire reason I need a pass is I'm a music writer, but apparently this is my only option at this point)

katherine, Friday, 12 April 2013 05:22 (eleven years ago) link

Good luck.

curmudgeon, Friday, 12 April 2013 14:22 (eleven years ago) link

Ned, New Orleans is not streaming the EMP from there online. I was told :

they are just taping (for archival purposes) a few of the panels.

EXHAUSTED. But another great EMP weekend this time in miniature.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 April 2013 02:44 (ten years ago) link

EMP New Orleans panels and such were great and it was cool meeting folks on panels. I was happy with my presentation. Will tell more when I get back home. Unfortunately there was some sort of mixup or something with registration, as they announced in advance that it was "sold out", but it ended up with lots of empty seats for morning and afternoon panels (few of the registrants came). In addition to EMP, gf & I joined in a 2nd line led by Hot 8, saw John Boutte at DBA, Kermit Ruffins at his restaurant and more.

curmudgeon, Monday, 22 April 2013 06:09 (ten years ago) link

Its a shame the New Orleans panels were not streamed and few of them were taped--there were some fascinating ones. Hudson Marquez talking about getting beat up by the New Orleans police circa 1969 when he was trying to find Professor Longhair who had disappeared from the music scene, and how Quint Davis, the founder of Jazzfest tried to take credit later for "discovering" 'Fess. Alison F#nsterstock's presentation The Sissy Strut: Gay, tran-g, and cross-dressing black male entertainers in New Orleans from Patsy Vidalia to Big Freedia had various wow moments. The Bounce movie that can't get distributed because of copyright issues provided great insight into that scene.

curmudgeon, Monday, 22 April 2013 14:46 (ten years ago) link

That does sound very great and what a shame so few were recorded -- the various posts on Twitter made those sessions sound wonderful.

Speaking for myself the panel I moderated featuring our own Jeff T was definitely a highlight, as were the one-two roundtable Saturday sessions on Kendrick Lamar and krump.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 22 April 2013 14:52 (ten years ago) link

so bummed that i had so much other traveling and stuff happening this month that there was no way i could make it to any of these. next year!

some dude, Monday, 22 April 2013 15:00 (ten years ago) link

Met or heard lots of interesting folks-- Memphis professor Charles Hughes who is writing a book about race relations in the 1960s to 80s soul scene; a jazz and blues author who did a great presentation on Italian and Sicilian music and its relationship to blues and jazz (Louis Armstrong listening to Caruso; that John Tutoro movie Passione) and Holly George-Warren on Muscle Shoals studio, the 60s soul of Fame Records, and soul singer Arthur Alexander(covered by the Beatles, Rolling Stones & Dylan; and John Lennon especially loved his vocals and listened to him a lot she said). Of course you can't hear everything at these events--I missed an avante-jazz one, and a New Orleans bounce, bass and Second-line panel was opposite mine.

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 23 April 2013 15:05 (ten years ago) link

Voice contributor hypothesizes about reasons for EMP regional status this year and its future, without mentioning EMP founder Weisbard's statements that EMP will be in Seattle next year, and the regional focus had to do with Weisbard's busy academic schedule this year. There's also some discussion of this year's NYC panels

http://www.cartwheelart.com/2012/12/28/ike-turner-killed-jfk-a-conversation-with-hudson-marquez/

One of the highlights of EMP New Orleans was listening to author Jason Berry interview Hudson Marquez about his finding Professor Longhair in New Orleans in 1969 or so. Marquez told awesome stories about going to the Dew Drop Inn when he was 13 and seeing r'n'b greats, ranted about Jazz & Heritage Fest founder Quint Davis stealing credit for finding 'Fess and about the NOPD, and much more. Just found this link about this guy who also created the cadillac ranch. His comments about Springsteen on the link are pretty funny too.
