Hard-g "gif" is such a punchable sound.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 18:21 (eleven years ago) link

I pronounce it with the hebrew pronounciation "gghhhhhif"

This is blowing my mind.

It's OK though cause I have a hard time remembering how to say Wi-fi. I've got it down now but once years ago I was on the phone with Hoosteen and said wi-fi like "wiffle" "feast" and he was like, WAHT DID YOU JUST SAY?! So I understand these things are sometimes hard.

Authorial intent is irrelevant, fuck a Compuserve.

Tom Hardy & the Batbreakers (Phil D.), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

According to Steve Wilhite, the creator of the GIF format, the original pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and the employees of CompuServe would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing this brand's television commercials.[4]

You know, one of the demons that rattles around in my brain makes me mispronouce hard g's as soft g's when no one else is around. So I get things like "Hunger James" and "Jerry Jarcia", etc.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:54 (ten years ago) link

I honestly don't care how the inventor wants it to be pronounced. The language will shake out its own pronunciation in the long run, and that will be with a hard "g".
