hi l.a. folks, can i bother you for a couple recs for my v. quick trip to your city comprising tomorrow and saturday?

interested in excellent mexican places, and any places that are fun and low-key for wine or cocktails. staying in studio city. also any interesting events or things happening during daytime. thanking u!

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

the best mexican in studio city is loteria. for cocktails you might wanna check out bow and truss in north hollywood -- they're a spanish restaurant with an interesting beverage program.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

i had a couple of nice cocktails at this good asian fusion spot called (lol) take a bao, on ventura blvd. great draft beers too. not too pricey iirc. haven't been but i've heard good to great things about black market liquor bar, also on ventura blvd. both are just east of laurel canyon.

mexican: there's a location of loteria grill in studio city. very good. i haven't been in ten years but i thought mexicali was ok. for old school, check out casa vega in sherman oaks. been there since the '50s, good times can be had there (if not "great" food.)

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

get bent otm re: bow and truss too!

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:40 (eleven years ago) link

bow and truss must've opened recently (e.g. after i left noho), huh?

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

cad will you have a car? or be near metro/bus?

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

bow & truss is pretty recent, yeah. past year or so.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:48 (eleven years ago) link

bow and truss has the chillest patio in town imo. i ended up there after a short stop at that pool hall/beer bar a couple doors down (the brickyard, i think? sucks.)

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

if you're in studio city, find a good sushi spot. some of the best sushi in town can be found around there.

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

for sushi, i like katsu-ya (the original location on ventura), kiwami, and ahi (a little further down towards coldwater canyon).

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

check out ramen jinya also.

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:52 (eleven years ago) link

wow b&t looks real nice, def gonna have to go there sometime

seconding katsu-ya

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

b&t fap?

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:54 (eleven years ago) link

wow thanks you guys.

i am renting a car but with barely 2 days i don't want to go nuts driving around.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

(basically it was super cheap to rent one with my lol corporate discount and it meant i didn't have to inconvenience friends who would otherwise pick me up)

call all destroyer, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:55 (eleven years ago) link

happy to help. i've lived in studio city and north hollywood for the past 3-ish years.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:56 (eleven years ago) link

fried smelt @ B&T was the one thing to avoid, or at least it was the time i went.

omar little, Thursday, 11 October 2012 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

there's a coupla tiki places in noho too if yr so inclined, prolly not that low-key on weekends tho

anyone been to the supposedly haunted bar in sherman oaks?

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Friday, 12 October 2012 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

which haunted bar? don't think so. most of my bar-hopping has been over the hill.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Friday, 12 October 2012 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

Thirding Katsu-ya. Also check out Coley's Jamaican on Magnolia - http://www.coleyscuisine.com

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 October 2012 00:48 (eleven years ago) link

sriracha bishop (get bent), Friday, 12 October 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

re: that bar - the chimneysweep lounge on woodman

The Chimneysweep in Sherman Oaks, which was opened in 1960, isn't themed, but like the Firefox, it has gold-veined mirrors and lots of wood paneling. It also has ghosts, says bartender Millie Bunch, who has been serving up sweetness and double whiskeys to an adoring crowd for 20 years.

"They sit in the corner," Bunch told the Enabler over an amply poured glass of Glenlivet. "They have uniforms on. I don't know what war they were in, but they want to be here."

these wilburys taste like wilburys (donna rouge), Friday, 12 October 2012 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

so thanks again everyone, katsu-ya totally ruled.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 13 October 2012 04:59 (eleven years ago) link

sriracha bishop (get bent), Saturday, 13 October 2012 05:06 (eleven years ago) link

Best coffee in Glendale is at the newly opened C+ (and it's 24hours too!): http://www.yelp.com/biz/c-plus-glendale

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 15 October 2012 00:33 (eleven years ago) link

i ended up grabbing a pretty decent and surprisingly inexpensive caprese panini at deluca's in the americana. there's a korean snack bar there too; maybe i'll try it out next time.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Monday, 15 October 2012 00:41 (eleven years ago) link

there's a korean snack bar there too;

Ahn-Joo. It's good, but they charge about a buck or two more than you feel like they should be charging. Price of convenience.

Holy crap, LA people – Enslaved, Earthless, Astra, Scott Kelly, AND White Hills November 10 at the Roxy for FREE. Viking metal, two different styles of epic psych rock, epic space prog, and a dude from Neurosis doing solo acoustic stuff. Going to be an AMAZING show. http://www.scionav.com/event/463/Enslaved,-White-Hills,-Scott-Kelly,-Earthless,-Astra# …

From Mount Analog's (Highland Park) mailing list:

Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby in-store!!!

This Sunday October 21 from 4-6pm come to Mount Analog for a free Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby in-store performance! Free drinks, fun, and a DJ set by Jimi Hey. YES!

nickn, Thursday, 18 October 2012 07:59 (eleven years ago) link

For those of us scared away by psych metal...

nickn, Thursday, 18 October 2012 08:00 (eleven years ago) link

It's not psych metal! It's psych rock! Heavy psych, but the only remotely scary band on that lineup is Enslaved, and they are pretty proggy.

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Stoners. Or something.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

The site listed them all as metal! Not really scared, just probably not my thing.

nickn, Friday, 19 October 2012 02:04 (eleven years ago) link

Huh. So it does. If you can't trust a music website run by a car company, what can you trust?

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Friday, 19 October 2012 02:20 (eleven years ago) link

I know, right?!!!

nickn, Friday, 19 October 2012 02:43 (eleven years ago) link

we're going to the faust thing at calarts after all -- i will keep an open mind about the calarts orchestra playing sunnO))), even though it's pretty lol.

On related ice cream truck news, I heard Koolhaus is opening a bricks and mortar store in Pasadena.
