Of course he would fuck around

i saw him play last week - his set ended abruptly after a shoving match broke out between him and a security guy after Ty tried shoving him into the mosh pit. it was pretty great.

five months pass...

I still receive digital promos of things from a few PR folks and I weed through them as I can (I will be better about it from now on). While weeding lately I checked out Slaugherhouse and man, was I impressed! I know this guy is prolific and has a ton of projects he lends his sweaty guitar to, and I don't know how deep I will get into his cannon, but this album is so great: fuzz turned all the way up to skronk (sometimes), psych rock done by guys who like metal playing in a garage with egg cartons splattered on the walls and every Pixies record in their album collection.

Found this live clip of my favorite cut from the disc:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6alYZZGa0

My favorite Sonic Youth moments are "Daydream Nation" and "Goo," when they approximate being an actual pop band. This album fits into that same wheelhouse for me.

I finally got TWINS. It's dope. Slaughterhouse is maybe a little bit better but they're close. Twins is probably catchier and Slaughterhouse rocks harder.

Overall MELTED is still consistently my favorite, I'm trying not to turn into a Ty Segall completist since he has so much shit out but I think I need to go back and get that one on vinyl.

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

It's the only one I own.

Trip Maker, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:34 (eleven years ago) link

Melted is the only one I still don't have, need to track that down.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 18 March 2013 17:36 (eleven years ago) link

dmr otm! Twins is probably the best thing he's done since Melted.

so expensive though! Drag City's prices are kind of outrageous nowadays. and no download code. is "Drag City Green Label" supposed to be some premium-quality pressing or something?

(DC not having anything on Spotify does make me buy more of their records overall, I will admit.)

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

best thing he did is srill the collabration with White Fence (hair) imo

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

also, sadly, at this point i don't think he got something new to offer.
maybe it's because of the over excessive releases lately

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

disagree ... it's a lot of records but all three of his 2012 releases hit the spot for me (and all were pretty different from each other)

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

sort of different. all quality tho.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2013 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

How's the singles collection?

the late great, Monday, 18 March 2013 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

the singles collection is great, but if you've only heard stuff from Goodbye Bread on, be prepared for a significantly lower-fi experience. i think you could construct a fantastic 45-minute record our of his three major 2012 releases and it would be an all-time classic.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 18 March 2013 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

i wouldn't go as far as "all time classic", but it will be great.

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

i could kill you if you weren't ready for it!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 18 March 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

ah?

nostormo, Monday, 18 March 2013 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

lol sorry, "all time classic" as far as Ty's catalog goes.

which tracks would you pick? I like him in theory but can never make it very far through one of his records. Finger is the only song of his that ever really stuck in my head. I think White Fence, Oh Sees, Fresh & Onlys are all a lot better but maybe I just haven't found a way into his catalog.

wk, Monday, 18 March 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago) link

just off the top of my head:

from slaughterhouse - the tongue, wave goodbye, tell me what's inside your heart
from hair - i am not a game, time, easy ryder
from twins - would you be my love, thank god for the sinners, love fuzz, you're the doctor

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

the more I think about it Twins is probably the best front to back out of these. it's easier to pick the winners and losers off Slaughterhouse.

dmr, Monday, 18 March 2013 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

and ... i just saw a new one in the store?!

the late great, Monday, 18 March 2013 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I like the Presley songs on Hair. I'll check out those others, thanks.

wk, Monday, 18 March 2013 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

and ... i just saw a new one in the store?!

Pretty sure that's a re-issue of his collab album with Mikal Cronin (which is pre the three everyone's talking about)

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 11:02 (eleven years ago) link

AMAAAAAAZING pink floyd cover on that record

galt you are correct

the late great, Tuesday, 19 March 2013 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

and predictably it rules

two months pass...

So Segall did an all-folk-minimalist-record.

oh well, i'll wait for the Fuzz project.

nostormo, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 22:35 (ten years ago) link

I'm really digging the album. I hear a lot of Neil Young in this, which is obviously always a good thing imo.

scubasteve, Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:41 (ten years ago) link

ha yeah, "all-folk-minimalist-record" sounds like a good move to me.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 August 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

it's ok, but not really challenging i think.

maybe it deserves more spinning to decide though

nostormo, Thursday, 15 August 2013 17:45 (ten years ago) link

yeah, it was pretty nice but gave me a bit of a "I've listened to barrett/bolan and you sir are no barrett/bolan" feeling

wk, Thursday, 15 August 2013 18:32 (ten years ago) link

The best Segall records are his collaborations. (White Fence, Cronin, Epsilons..)

He should stick to that formula imo

nostormo, Friday, 16 August 2013 21:00 (ten years ago) link

one month passes...

Pretty stoked on this Fuzz stuff. Really dig all the singles - none of which are on the LP!

And the King Crimson cover is a lot of fun.

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 25 September 2013 13:16 (ten years ago) link

I saw FUZZ live on Friday night at the Tufnell Park Dome. They totally killed it. Segall is an animal of a drummer and the riffs are just so huge... I love the singles, but live, stripped of the slightly distant reverb, the tunes are just monstrous. I kind of think they could be huge.

Walter Galt, Monday, 30 September 2013 11:51 (ten years ago) link

gah, want the fancy-ass version of the FUZZ lp so dang bad. somebody please send one to me for no reason at all.

also hope to make one of the mass shows in a couple weeks.

IIIrd Datekeeper (contenderizer), Monday, 30 September 2013 15:19 (ten years ago) link

Fuz is his best effort
Along with the Fence collaboration imo.

nostormo, Monday, 30 September 2013 17:36 (ten years ago) link

i'm not feeling the fuzz so much, miss his squally guitars, but its a good record

Holy Shirt! (stevie), Monday, 30 September 2013 18:33 (ten years ago) link

Just now getting to the Fuzz album and it's so good. Some sick guitar on there.

nine months pass...

so the new one is pretty straightforward psychedlic garage. and it's good.

nostormo, Thursday, 31 July 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

arrangements are much better than usual.
he/they learned how to play the instruments.

nostormo, Thursday, 31 July 2014 18:38 (nine years ago) link

need to go find this...

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 31 July 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

it's great. buy it. (when its out).

The beer was cold, but so was the glass, which drives me crazy. (stevie), Thursday, 31 July 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

three weeks pass...

liking a lot of this but the guitar solo passages sort of distract me from everything else. bet it will rip live though!

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 02:44 (nine years ago) link

its his longest album yet, isn't it?

you couldn't even wear a fedora if your lifes depended on it (stevie), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 05:22 (nine years ago) link

yeah, it's 17 songs, and some push four minutes. it's good but i can't decide if it's too long. i think it might be.
