"Labrador" is a good song in fact.

never knew Wurster was in The Right Profile, I saw that band.

the smallest brag: scharpling made a video for a song from the new ben gibbard album. in the very last shot of the video, you can see, prominently displayed, an album that i played on

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90ocplIH7I4

the video is kind of a rip of the video for "sugarcube" by yo la tengo though

not as much as the Ted Leo video Scharpling did (and that was hilairs so)

I could be way off here, but I've always been under the impression that Tom had some degree of creative input on the "Sugarcube" video (friends with the band, shades of the 'rock school' script he was working on w/Wurster before School Of Rock became a thing, stylistically very Scharplingandwursteresque).

Apparently it was announced within the last quarter of an hour that the final Best Show will be on December 13.

yeah he's announced it was ending a few times over the years but almost always it was apparent it was a joke. this seems for real judging from evan funk davies tweets.

lots of famous-ish people connected with the show are tweeting about it being the end, seems somewhat legit. disappointing if true.

I'm excited that a Newbridge TV project finally happened, but I kinda hope it's a one-off. It was definitely one for the fans.

Thereby Creating Humor (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 4 November 2014 17:02 (nine years ago) link

I programmed the DVR to start recording five minutes early and when I watched it this morning I wasn't initially sure whether it was actually starting early, since the show was preceded by a commercial for something called Dump Dinners and starring a woman who'd appeared on Tim & Eric but it's apparently actually a thing.

S&W appearing on the March 13 episode of The Simpsons.

Star Wars ate shiitake (latebloomer), Saturday, 5 March 2016 17:17 (eight years ago) link

is this gonna be scripted in a way where the average viewer is supposed to know who they hell they are, because that seems... not realistic?

drive me to a girly rave (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 5 March 2016 17:40 (eight years ago) link

I was at the Durham show too. The Superchunk finale was fantastic, as was Roy referring to Tom as "The Creature From the Black Fred Perry Shirt".

I have to sheepishly admit that, despite living here for 2.5 years now, the only local reference I caught was Shooters II.

JRN, Saturday, 5 March 2016 18:26 (eight years ago) link

xpost Tim and Eric voiced random foodies for their unsurprisingly mediocre episode, so I imagine S&W will likewise be voicing random characters that won't presuppose foreknowledge of their work or inspire the uninitiated to look into them further. Despite my deep cynicism towards late-period Simpsons, I'm super excited for the dudes. I really want them to get paying gigs that play to their talents!

Telephone Meatballs (Old Lunch), Saturday, 5 March 2016 18:49 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, I learned just after posting the news that S&W are not playing themselves (though their characters are made up to look like them). I'll watch cause I'm a fan (of S&W, not of late-period Simpsons), and because there is no way that it could be worse than the episode that Werner Herzog did (right...?).

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Saturday, 5 March 2016 20:23 (eight years ago) link

Their nametags read "Barry" and "Paul" in the promo image, and Barry is drawn to look like Wurster, not Dworkin. This was probably a good reason to assume they weren't playing themselves.

oh hey, nobody mentioned on this thread that the Best Show is back, and since someone asked Tom "Do you miss it?" recently and it spiralled him into a bit of a depression (although he remains funny), anybody who hasn't already needs to go to thebestshow.net.

Three Word Username, Sunday, 6 March 2016 10:13 (eight years ago) link

As far as latter day Simpsons that I have seen go, that was pretty painless. I'm hoping that the bit that they did at the end wasn't written by them, though--it sounded sorta S&W-esque, but without being funny.

I was supposed to call in today, after bringing Dudio another smoked meat sandwich, but I was not home.

(they called me out on the last 30m of power hoping i'd bring another one to him at the montreal sketch fest!)

yellow despackling power (Will M.), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

I thought the Tompressions were pretty delightful, although few of them really did impressions in the sense of trying to do the voice - it was mostly just copying his phrasing. I was really glad that Tom got enjoyment out of them and didn't get bummed out or mad.

Tom and Julie Klausner were on Hollywood Handbook this week and it was pretty nuts. At the end, Hayes Davenport does a short impression of Tom that works better as a true impression voice-wise than most of the callers.

"WAAAA!! I DON'T WANT TO DO THE SHOW!!!"

Three Word Username, Friday, 20 May 2016 08:07 (seven years ago) link

That was one of the funniest episodes in a while. The Tompressions were great but that last call with the high school kid was amazing, especially the conclusion.

It's frustrating when a stand-out episode is so self-referential because you can't really recommend it to someone as a "start here" episode.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 20 May 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

I don't even know how that's done in a general sense. I've reeled in a couple of people with selected Wurster calls but I've never convinced a single person to listen to an entire episode.

Corn Elephant, Jr. (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 May 2016 17:38 (seven years ago) link

is there a GOMPilation out there? because if so that'd be a great place to start

yellow despackling power (Will M.), Friday, 20 May 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

There are some good "best of" bits on youtube that have gone up in the last six months or so -- I've gotten some friends with long attention spans to give the show a try after hearing those, and they've stuck with it.

Hearing Tom crack up barely audibly, off-mic with his head probably under the desk, during the imitations is so much more fun to listen to than loud obnoxious on-mic hamming some LA podcasters are into.

Three Word Username, Friday, 20 May 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

Oh man, those moments when one or both of them is clearly struggling to maintain their composure are some of my favorite ever.

Corn Elephant, Jr. (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 May 2016 18:11 (seven years ago) link

Particularly when Jon is all "hello?" when he knows Tom is engaged in an off-mic laughing fit.

Corn Elephant, Jr. (Old Lunch), Friday, 20 May 2016 18:12 (seven years ago) link

I don't really try to get people to listen to it other than being enthusiastic about it in front of my friends. It took me a few episodes to get into the rhythm of the show myself and I only kept with it because a friend whose taste I respect was obsessed with the show. But I respect that it's not for everyone - it's a long show, the pace is slower than a lot of other modern entertainment, and Tom might be grating to some listeners.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 20 May 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link

The people who didn't give their names ("WAAH" and the Squarespace guy) were the best impressions. Very fun show.

I started listening to the show via Best Show Gems maybe 5/6 years ago, and then later moved on to the full show, which is a completely different beast. I have to say the first half hour of the show is still a slog to get through. I usually just skip to the first call. I can imagine people downloading/listening to the show to check it out but then turning it off before it even gets going.

While still hilarious, I'm finding a lot of Wurster's older 'awful people' characters less funny because what we might've once called exaggerated caricatures are now just Trump supporters.
