this is good, but it seems sort of...slight? some cool production and obviously there's nothing like his voice, but it's not the cinematic experience AIWIY was; there's no centerpiece like "teach me" that just leaves you reeling

yeah the double-tracking of his vocals on "how many drinks" is really nicely done, makes it sound like the song is floating away from you as you're listening to it; it's almost flirtatious

how many drinks turns amazing when he drops back into his lower register towards the end

i def heard the qualms re "pussy is mine" but it's a pretty bravely fragile, even subversive track. how often does a male r&b singer say "you make me cum"?? it's plays nice with how bombastic "use me" is

He's made a ridiculous percentage of my favorite songs of the past couple years, but he hasn't quite mastered the album format.

Really? This feels totally coherent and of-a-piece to me, possibly because the sound is so coherent even when the songwriting goes to loads of different places.

I really like this by the way, haven't paid much attention to Miguel before now but I'm glad I got to hear all these songs for the first time at once. It's so self-assured, like you get the feeling a lesser talent would either have hedged their bets and thrown in a couple of rote house bangers OR just gone totally over-the-top with the psychedelia and produced some kind of garish Solange-does-Flaming-Lips mess.

Will admit I feared the worst on hearing the outro to Don't Look Back but he never lets the aesthetic or the instrumentation overwhelm either the voice or the songwriting, both of which are by and large impeccable.

This album is truly amazing. Love it.

He was pretty good live last night at the Howard Theatre in DC. Sold-out show, lots of enthusiastic women. He was backed by a guitarist, keyboardist who also played bass, another keyboardist and a drummer. Did a fair amount of Prince-inspired dance moves with the mic. His seduction effor with a woman upfront on the "P is Mine" did not go over too well, but his friendly and humble chatter later did, as did the brief tribute to Los Angeles rap and his hits and more. Played for about an hour and 10 minutes.

I guess expectations are so low for live r'n'b shows that people didn't thing he would do one. Yes, it was a work/school night but it was not that late. Oh, Bobby Valentino opened last night. He was ok. I think you're trying too hard when you pull your shirt off after only the second song.

i think encores are less expected outside of the rock show context, at least for people that don't go to a lot of concerts in general.

It's pretty amusing that 'Pussy Is Mine' is bookended with this sort of fake sheepishness and shunted at the end of the album. If this were a Terius album it would be wonderfully and unashamedly blown up into a 10mins vainglorious album centrepiece and split into 'Pussy Is Mine (Parts 1 and 2)'.

yeah it's weird i was at the weekend last night and he didn't come back for an encore, but the crowd waited around for one, but actually didn't cheer/chant for one? very odd...

outside this thread i'm not sure there are any more gay rumors about miguel than there are about pretty much every popular R&B singer

apparently Kaleidoscope Dream and a lot of other albums dropped early on vinyl this week to make the Grammys deadline

i noticed a few months ago that he was selling the vinyl on his website and that it shipped a week early but i thought it was just some general incentive to get ppl to spring for the vinyl

I wld buy a copy on vinyl

"Use Me" and "Don't look Back" both sounded great live Wednesday night. Not overblown or overwrought.

ftr there are some gems on that 33-song compilation rev posted upthread. "magazines" in particular, some others i can't remember. many of these are probably early cuts and he's still looking for his voice (figuratively, but literally sometimes - i'm almost posotive ne-yo is actually singing "hand it over"), but the quality is surprisingly good overall

a bunch of these are songs for other artists i had no idea he wrote

i think he was nominated for a grammy for a song he did with musiq... also he wrote some joints on 'raymond vs raymond' (including "mars vs. venus" !!)
