that is to say that nothing about mullet dress screams "princess" to me -- it's more like "modest/flashy" (or "flashy/modest" depending on which direction you're walking i guess)

LL is more on my princess vibe. Or ball gowns, because I was brainwashed by Disney.

My mother still has her midnight blue velvet and lace medieval-style Jessica McClintock dress from the ACTUAL '70S Y'ALL, and it's one of the ones in Jesse's poster.

That dress was the definition of a princess to me forever and ever, along with this illustration from a children's book:

If you see a person who looks like that, you know she is a princess.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 19:59 (eleven years ago) link
Oh man, my mom loved to put me in Jessica McClintock stuff when I was kid. I found a pic recently of myself in a pink number with lots of bows and impressively enormous sleeves.

I love this but why does it have to be BLACK? I want it in, like, emerald green or something.http://images.asos.com/inv/media/5/4/0/4/2244045/black/image1xl.jpg(ASOS)
― kinder, Friday, 28 September 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link
Nothing against black but I seem to only wear monochrome when I really want to be wearing amazing colours.
― kinder, Friday, 28 September 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link
Maybe not the right thread but if you're invited to a wedding evening do only i.e. not the whole wedding part, the dress code is still the same right? Just checking I can wheel out the dress I always wear for fancy occasions and it won't be too much...?
― kinder, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link
You're just invited to the reception and not the ceremony, but it's an evening reception? Yes, dress code is the same - unless otherwise specified, something in the realm of cocktail attire.
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link
Cool, thanks
― kinder, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:38 (eleven years ago) link
The evening do thing is a totally foreign concept here. You're either invited to the whole thing or not. I have been to more weddings in the UK though than I have here (weirdly) and ime that would be totally fine. Everyone who has been there all day will still be in their fancy dresses so you'll fit right in. I think it would seem stranger if you came dressed down. Break out the fancy, I say.

x-posts
Not totally foreign - that's what we did!
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link
That's what my mom and stepfather did, too, come to think of it.
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link
Did you have a private ceremony and invite ppl to the dinner etc?
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 19 October 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link
I feel like it's much more common here to be invited to the whole thing soup to nuts. I mean that's the default, right? In the UK it's very common to have a set of family/friends at the ceremony and meal and then invite another set of more casual friends to the drinks and dancing. I've found that most people here have never heard of that kind of thing before.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 19 October 2012 15:52 (eleven years ago) link
I'd never heard of it before being ivited to only an evening do myself. The whole concept seemed really strange at first.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 19 October 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link
I think being invited to the whole event is definitely more common, even if the ceremony and the reception are separated by hours and miles.
We got up at an ungodly early hour and went to the courthouse with about ten people, friends and family, and then had our reception at a bar and invited, I think, about 30 people. My parents got married in a church in front of maybe ten people, friends and family, and then had an insanely huge reception at a local yacht club (not as fancy as it sounds).
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link
Yacht clubs never are.
― purveyor of generations (in orbit), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:09 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah. I think now it's becoming more common to do stuff like that but it's will sort of thought of as unusual especially by older or more traditional people. I remember telling my mom we were going to the drinks/dancing part once and was really confused. But you're not actually invited to the wedding? etc.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 19 October 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link
To be fair, we issued an open invitation to anyone who wanted to accompany us to the court house, but not too many people wanted to get up that early.
― carl agatha, Friday, 19 October 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link
I remember invites to big Mexican-American weddings, when I was a kid and it was the some people were invited to the wedding only, some to the reception after and others to the breakfast at midnight. Baptisms and quinceñeras were the same, several events not everyone was invited to all of them. Might still be that way.
― *tera, Friday, 19 October 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link
breakfast at midnight!!!
AWESOME
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Friday, 19 October 2012 17:35 (eleven years ago) link
It's pretty common to have an evening thing kind of separate from the wedding day bit. But I've never actually been to one, only whole weddings! It's a co-worker's one tomorrow (my boss will be there, lol). We just invited everyone to the whole thing for ours - was too young to really have co-workers tbh and would've felt weird inviting them at that stage in my life; it was family and schoolfriends. Now my friendship group is quite different.

i think the black on black of the collar reduces the cutesy-ness significantly

Awww. I'm just normal! E, I will send the info over FB in case there are any evil lurkers. I think that dress is fucking BOMB. I have a monthly discount code too, hopefully we can make this thing -cheap-!

Glad to help! I am a little burnt out on eShakti, too many purchases lately but I suppose as a result they love me & send me this stuff. Hope it works! It was sent with no context whatsoever, so weird!

Ah, rats. I think maybe the card is tied to your account because it keeps saying not valid or already used. Thanks anyway.

Awww! I would offer to do it myself but I bet it would just deliver to my house :( Sorry to get your hopes up dude! That 10% off should at least work, but that's nowhere near as fun as a free dress. :(
