This game has kept GTA 4 and Halo 3 out of my 360 for the last fortnight. I'm totally rubbish, but it's got a strange combination of 'just one more go' with the challenges and being a great game to just chill out with doing random tricks as you wander around the streets.

Yeah, it's a really nice game to zone out to.

never played this but the demo for the sequel is pretty cool.

I'm playing Skate 2 tonight, I will be sure to give my impressions.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 11 January 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link
I'm downloading the demo right now (it's HUGE). I liked the first game, and it sounds like 2 is a better game, but it also sounds like it's so similar to the first one that I'm not sure there's any point to it, i.e. I'm not sure I want to basically play through that whole game again.
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 11 January 2009 21:17 (fifteen years ago) link
It's pretty likely that I'll play Skate 2 more than any other game in 2009. Skate was such a great game to just zone out to, and if they improved the sandbox (which it seems is the case) and added walking/lip tricks, it will be hard to get me to stop playing.

I really love the concept and vibe of this game but executing the moves was far too hard for me so in the end I just gave up : /

Dude you are a gamer you can totally do it.

― There's a Grady now?? (sunny successor), Sunday, 11 January 2009 23:40 (fifteen years ago) link
Played the demo - confirming my gut instincts - feels (basically) exactly the same as the original. Good game, but I'm not feeling any need to pick up the sequel. It looks a little better, I guess, but not much. There are some weird things about it too - framerate still felt a little hitchy - and while it's cool you can now get off your board, it's weird that you can only walk forward & that when you hit "y" the board magically flies back to you (instead of you walking over to it and picking it up). Moving objects also felt kind of clunky...
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 12 January 2009 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link
the framerate is a solid 60fps now I read?
you walk too slow when you get off the board I thought : /
it's nice you can change cameras this time tho why they omitted that from the demo I don't know
― cozwn, Monday, 12 January 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link
i've played this demo a lot, definitely getting this. Took me a while to get used to the controls and the way the game is in comparison to Tony Hawk's (i.e. you ollie with the right stick, you can't do stupidly mental strings of tricks, 1080 double kickflip backflip nosebone with grind for 50 metres, you have to actually land your grinds yourself etc.) but now I'm really enjoying it, especially the grinds.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 02:30 (fifteen years ago) link
Based on 2 hours of playing the game last night, I honestly think skate 1 is better. There are a lot of glitchy things that make me think the game was rushed to retail. I'm surprised by how poorly they implemented walking and dragging. It looks very nice, and I'm sure I'll play it a fuckload, but I'm a little disappointed.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 04:08 (fifteen years ago) link
The film editor is highly inferior to the one in the first game.
The ability to place a marker when you're trying to accomplish a trick is a great, great thing.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 04:09 (fifteen years ago) link
if this is worse than the last one then I better pick that up as well.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:42 (fifteen years ago) link
you should definitely pick up skate. jim; I think it's pennies these days and it's def a great game

boom, bought. Thank you internet for allowing my unemployed ass to impulse buy.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 23:50 (fifteen years ago) link
now I want to give my copy ANOTHER another go but my littlest bro knocked it
― cozwn, Wednesday, 14 January 2009 00:00 (fifteen years ago) link
so I did go back and give it another go and suddenly everything just clicked: I can see the best lines, I am having fun finding cool spots to session and find the good lines, the tricks now seem possible cos I realise it's best to flick the stick rather than roll it (yeah this was a "no shit" moment for me)
the only bother is that my disc has some massive scratches on it (literally 2mm ring of scratches round the whole circumference -> this must be the drive that's caused it) so sometimes the game hard freezes the 360, or I'll be skating around and fall into massive black holes where the art hasn't loaded in
tempted to pick up skate.2 now for this reason
― cozwn, Sunday, 18 January 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago) link
they really did a great job with the city in this game: there are hardly any spots where it isn't fun to skate, there's always something to trick off or grind on and it all loos pretty different from area to area
― cozwn, Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago) link
also I've uploaded some of my replays but I can't find them on EA's www : ////
― cozwn, Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:04 (fifteen years ago) link
polyphonic, why's the film editor worse in the second one? the editor in the first one is really well implemented, I thought, and very easy to use
also what does this mean: The ability to place a marker when you're trying to accomplish a trick is a great, great thing.

― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Tuesday, January 13, 2009 11:50 PM (5 days ago)
hurry up ffs, play.com!
the marker is a thing you can place at a spot so that you can automatically go back to that spot, in the demo for instance you're up the top of this ramp which gives you sweet air when you get to the bottom and you can keep just going straight back there by pressing LB plus up on the dpad or something.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link
oh, I thought it might've been something difft cos you can do that in skate.1

ah right, i assume that's what he meant, might be wrong.
― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

― Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Sunday, 18 January 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link
You can? I never noticed it. I can't tell you how many times I would fail some trick and then spend an eternity trying to get back in position to try again, very frustrating.
polyphonic, why's the film editor worse in the second one?
To be fair I didn't spend a lot of time with it, but the first one was much more intuitive. I made something cool with it on my first try.

i'm gonna get skate 2, yeah. I'm just trying to do this challenge at the Matrix for Rob Drydek and Big Black where you grind to 360 Flip to FS Crooked. It's annoying me.

see that video you put up cozen, I never thought to do that spot by grinding so did some stupid combination of fliptrick to manual to fliptrick. It took me ages. Doh.

I couldn't seem to 360 flip up high enough to grind that thing.

Yeah, there wasn't a lot going on in that demo, huh? Just downloaded it and gave it a whirl. Seems like much more of the same, which means I'll prolly buy it, but I'll wait til it's £20-£25 I reckon. Love the new damage indicators when you smash yourself and you go all x-ray though. nice touch.
― CraigG, Thursday, 15 April 2010 18:07 (fourteen years ago) link
gotta admit - I can't even drum up enough interest this time around to download and try out the demo for 3. For the most part I really enjoyed the first game, but yearly sequels seem completely pointless here & it just looks pretty much like they want you to buy the same game again. This series is the perfect example of how quickly a fresh, new approach can get completely stale, unfortunately.
― Jeff LeVine, Friday, 16 April 2010 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link
such a great franchise doesn't deserve this treatment, I'd love if they at least took a couple of years between iterations and fully fleshed out their new ideas
― etrian odysseus (cozen), Friday, 16 April 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link
When Skate came out, the thing that was so refreshing about it is that it felt much more like a simulation of skateboarding than the arcade style version of Tony Hawk. But now they add this bailing mini-game that is honestly less realistic than Tony Hawk even. Hey, throw yourself off a building and then dive headfirst into a dumpster for extra points! Turn yourself into a flying squirrel by holding your arms out!
I'm not sure it won't be fun, and hopefully they'll fix the graphics (especially of the characters, who looked terrible), but the demo definitely made me wonder. Think I'll rent this one.

playing the skate3 demo got me back into playing skate2. and i'm into it! still hard as hell tho.
they really don't expect you to have all of those tricks at your fingertips, right? i basically look up what i need to do for a given challenge and then try to execute it. if i just go i end up doing the same things over and over again. and some of the challenges are damn near impossible. i always feel like i'm just half-assing my way through things -- getting my thumb to do the same thing consistently is basically beyond me i think.
but still, i'm really liking it. frustrating but it has me coming back. i'm excited for 3!
