Please don't destroy me for being so non ITK.

I downloaded some Bunnybrains stuff the other day- possibly illegally -and it's been cracking me up since.

'Art Carlson' is the song. It cracks me up.It's fucking hilarious. The 'singer' sounds Limey? Is this the 'correct' BB?

Maybe Scott on here can elucidate and possibly point me in the right direction of more?

"I suspect that I've come to an end of a way of working with this record," Mr. Bunny told

the late Oriana Fallaci in a 2005 interview published in Corriere della Sera. "Death by

Blowjob is like space travel in the sense of mirrored exploration ("grammes chinois"),

whereas Holiday Massacre '98 is sea travel in the sense of putting oneself into a tea

ceremony and allowing oneself to cover one's ass."

The choice wasn't a difficult one; the Bunnies had long considered covering Gregorio

Allegri's classic 1620's motet Miserere mei, Deus, having always preferred the Roman

School to the obtrusive madrigals of Monteverdi and his dung-eating ilk.

With a title seemingly cannibalized from the antithetical repertoires of Dave Walker and

Haruli Murakami (Walker: "Hello My Big Big Honey!" Love Letters to Bangkok Bar Girls and

Their Revealing Interviews, Murakami: Sputnik Sweetheart), "Hello Sweetheart" would prove

to be an echo of Side Two of the Bunny Magick LP, rendering rumors of dissolution otiose.

"They drank in the darkness and the wind," recalled La Persona. If the alien flash and

indifferent filigree of the Bunnybrains' stage presentation had been a stumbling block

for them in Chemnitz, the group certainly weren't about to alter it.

What Makes You Think You Can Save Yourself (From Yourself) was created over ten days in

March 2008 at a cost of 40,645 South African rand. Frank Farian was again in place as

producer, this time overseeing the entire album. Reflecting on the marathon recording

sessions at Johannesburg's Play Play studio complex, Farian was philosophical: Obviously,

these things happen. It's nothing rare. It happens in every band... Ross was so upset

when we did "Don't Fuck the Tiger," about Mikey's nap treatments, that there was a

tension bewteen Ross and Dan. Worse, Wolfman was telling me this ("Suprematist paintings,

discovered barbarians") and Dan was telling me that ("Cock Displacement wore ordinary

clothes") and I was always in the middle, a drugged potion through sill-like eyes." Joe's

instincts, meanwhile, were exclusively heuristic. He penned "Speeds Freak" whilst

pursiung a pulsing organic rhythm in freer form. Dan's green leaf had stuck to his front

teeth.

The album's executive producer, Lou Pearlman, pointed out, in any case, that Bunny's

relationship with Maya Hayuk - begun on the night after her hunger strike in response to

the artwork of the Squirrel Attack picture disc - had since become "a prison ship,

undressed on a meadow" and was likely to haunt fevers sooner than later. He conceded,

however, that the atmosphere in Northcliff "was so depressing that I flew back to have

Christmas Day in Orlando. But Eg refused to leave and had "Kersfees Dag" all by himself,

playing up the tragedy. I remember we drove to a New Year's party at Sandton - the usual

sort of teen-boys-and-ketamine party of those days - through swarms of locusts and no

conversation."

The critical response to "Pressed for Time" was instantaneous and incandescent. Malcolm

Tent's old chum Gowri Ramnarayanan, writing in Malayala Manorama, was typical: "This is

it, folks: Prima Pratica Time," he began, subsequently comparing the song to Dylan's

"Belle Isle" and Max Ernst's Self-Constructed Small Machine. Another review nominated it

- somewhat prematurely, given that 2009 was not yet out - as the greatest song of the

decade. Across the Indian, Oman's Al Shabiba was more keenly alive to the sepulchral

undertow in even a melody as beautiful as this. "Added to the thick mix is the unique

voice of Jilian Jamie Bunny," wrote V. Rajagopal in Nizwa, "who sounds... [as if she's]

about to sink her teeth into your fingertapes [on] "Pressed for Time." Ken Barnes of

Westport Magazine was more skittish, noting that the track's opening phrase sounds "like

a modern-style followup from Giovanni Nanino & His Libro d'Oro Five (in some strange

sense one of the Bunnybrains' spiritual ancestors)."

By this time, "Tea and Coffee" was shouldering its way up the singles chart - indeed, it

would reach its high point of number two the following Tuesday - so the band's dignity,

its vestige of intoxication, was intact as far as record sales were concerned, a hyphen

of prior and past moments. Rather than facing indifference from the record-buying public,

however, the Bunnybrains found themselves faced instead with the dismissive attitude of a

music press utterly transformed by the emergence of shed, a music press for whom the

phrase "tweaking and geeking" was just as bitterly talsimanic as "the urn of my despair"

had been to the Bunnies' compas antagonists in 1988...

weirdo records blurb..thnxx weirdos,,"
Loose as a goose rock bashouts. The Bunnies never get any "better" or "smarter". They never stop thinking that unshaven men in dresses holding grimy stuffed animals is good comedy. They also never decide that synth-goth or 60s hippie folk is worth a serious re-appraisal. They're surprisingly skilled songwriters, if you're into Electric Eels-type tension. And even after 20 odd years, they can't sell records to save their lives. A high point on this one arrives when a toy xylophone mimics a phone (badly) and the singer takes it as a cue to launch into a cover of 'Chantilly Lace'!"

Some stupid ideas work in the art world. Though he failed to conjure the level of art he desired to, Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space" has remained in the cult cannon precisely because it is so bad that it's good. The Shaggs -- a three-piece featuring three sisters who lacked any notion of how to play their instruments -- created innocent, mildly dim-witted, wildly creative pop tunes.

Then there's Connecticut's own Bunny Brains. Birthed in Danbury, the band is simultaneously the best and worst thing to come out of the nutmeg state -- a fusion of high concept punk rock and the lowest of low sleaze. Imagine the sound of the Butthole Surfers' brown acid punk mating with Hawkwind's hard-edged space rock, Killdozer's stern, weird narratives and Corey from "Life Goes On" and you have a small idea of the band's sound. Bobby Bunny described the band's sound best in the singles collection "Sin Gulls," calling it "mind numbing utter crap and noise."

Bunny Brains' storied history features a one record deal with Matador (then home to Pavement, Liz Phair and Helium), earning a photo spread in a feature on style in the New York Times Magazine and a tour with new age yodeling beard-o Devendra Banhart (wherein Dan Bunny shaved his legs and flicked the dirty cream at the audience). Most of the bands' songs showcase Dan Bunny screaming strange notes while a rotating cast of a rhythm section cranks noisy sludge rock that sounds. Many times swirls of distortion pair with a chaotic "anything goes" exterior and wrap around a bouncy beat for a somewhat catchy Bunny Brains tune. The rest of the time, the band loops ridiculous sections of tapes, records nonsensical ramblings and ridiculous mumblings.

But the signature of the band's existence was (is, depending on who you ask) their live show. The typical Bunny Brains show centered around Dan Bunny, who sometimes threw assorted foodstuffs at the audience, ran around naked and violently attacked audience members. The last Bunny Brains spectacle I witnessed featured general acts of sexual deviancy, fake blood, a stained wedding dress and some skronk rock guitar solos.

Since their heyday, the band dissolved into two factions. Ultrabunny carry the band's torch musically, with original Bunny Brains members Malcolm Tent (owner of Danbury's now defunct Trash American Style record store) and Bobby Bunny. They're the Velvet Revolver that sprouted from the ashes of the Bunny Brains. Meanwhile, Dan Bunny commandeered the Bunny Brains title and the band's spirit, spreading the chaotic atmosphere throughout the underground. Through anarchistic tendencies and gonzo performances, Dan has gained gallery exhibits and performance from elite New York art hounds. Guess stupid is as stupid does

Bunnybrains - What Makes You Think You Can Save Yourself (From Yourself)
Posted by Joe On June - 26 - 2009

Genre: Indie Rock, Noise, Lo-Fi.

I like my albums to contain music. Maybe I’m backwards in my thinking, but it’s the truth. And if they don’t contain music, I want what’s on there to sound good. What Makes is borderline music, borderline “let’s record whatever we want.”

bunnybrains-what-makes-you-think-album-cover

There are very few tracks on the album that are actual “music.” There’s a lot of noise/people playing around, but not a lot of music.

Instrumentally, the album is all over the place. It’s obvious they’re going for some sort of “new age hippie” thing, but I feel like the original hippies had a purpose in mind, and these blokes don’t. Actually I’m pretty sure the group is made up of a bro and a chick. As you can hear from the above track, Bunnybrains thought it acceptable to leave instrumental mistakes in their music. In fact, the album is riddled with them. Mind you, “Love Tree In The Yard” is one of the more structured pieces on the release. Breaking free from conventional time signatures is all well and good, but there has to be some order to the song. There’s a thunderstorm going on right now outside of my house, and I can’t tell if the rumbling is coming from my headphones or the thunder. Did I mention that this album is decently lo-fi?

Vocally, I’ll share the following. Hippies in the 60s had a couple purposes in mind. Love, the war, drugs, and a couple extras here and there. Hippie music tends to talk about those things. In general, hippie music was kind of understandable, even though a lot of it was hidden behind drug metaphors. I can’t understand what the crap Bunnybrains is talking about. 60s hippies could still generally sing in tune. Bunnybrains’ male and female vocalists sound terrible. They’re all over the place. Which leads me to conclude the following: 1) LSD is a lot more potent nowadays, and screws you up so much that it’s impossible to sing close to the right notes, whereas weaker LSD in the 60s allowed for correct tuning, or 2)Bunnybrains’ vocalists can’t sing. Whichever one it is, make the necessary change, ya know? Where’s the good stuff?

Overall, I can’t give this album a good rating in clear conscience. I would be doing a disservice to all of the musicians out there who try to make art, instead of recording unstructured “jams” with a bunch of hollering overtop the instruments. Thus, my rating.

My Rating: 1.9/10

P.S. - I gave it 1.9 because there’s probably a thousand people out of the 6 billion on this earth that would disagree with me. I can’t see it being more than that. Goodnight, and good luck.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN BOY
Limited and numbered to 250 copies on Speedy Wunderground (The label has previously released singles by Steve Mason and Emiliana Torrini, The Archie Bronson Outfit and Toy and Natasha Khan). Scotti Brains is label chief and producer Dan Carey, best friend and fellow producer / recording artist Oli Bayston and Beth Buxton. Taking their name from a shared love of San Franciscan psych band Bunny Brains and Dan's cat Scotti (who coincidentally is prone to close his eyes and 'dance' upon hearing Bunny Brains), Scotti Brains was initially a project born out of early morning recording sessions following parties at Dan's South London studio.
