I read this as "helvetica vs anal".

Anal > Helvetica > Arial fwiw.

You have to install the font first.

fiscal liberal (kenan), Friday, 28 November 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Arial had its place before ClearType, because it really does look ok even when pixellated a bit, and Helvetica looks like doo-doo without good sub-pixel rendering. Whether MS used it for that reason or to avoid paying royalties is a matter of debate I suppose, but I wouldn't called Arial a cheap rip-off of Helvetica. Every typeface (I can think of) is based on another, and there's a strong case for Arial being purpose-built and well-thought-out. And let's face it, Microsoft's foundry is good at what they do. Not all their creations hit my sweet spot -- I could really do without Trebuchet MS, for instance -- but some of the new Vista fonts are excellent. Corbel, Segoe, Calibri... gotta give props where they're due.

But I do love Frutiger. I just zipped and sent my collection of it to my girlfriend yesterday, because she was in a font mood.

Watched the docu-film Helvetica last night, really enjoyed it. It's going to drive me mad, though, looking for fonts everywhere.

i only missed one on that quiz by the way - toyota - but i'll admit that mattel was a toss-up as well

if there's a lowercase t or s it's easy

Tracer Hand, Monday, 9 November 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

19/20 i find s and lowercase e the easiest to distinguish

just sayin, Monday, 9 November 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

c as well. arial has the ends all chopped off at jaunty angles.

George Mucus (ledge), Monday, 9 November 2009 14:26 (fourteen years ago) link

14/20 - not so great.

(I think I'm starting to prefer Arial argh! I like the jaunty angles)

Persian Pickle (Masonic Boom), Monday, 9 November 2009 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link

strangely i like the jaunty angles in akzidenz-grotesk but loathe them in arial.. no idea why

there's just something so pleasingly balanced about akzidenz-grotesk, yet also something ever so slightly handmade about it

max, Friday, 3 September 2010 04:12 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah even for a movie about fonts helvetica was pretty fuckin boring

office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 3 September 2010 04:14 (thirteen years ago) link

basically it was like "we interviewed some graphic designers about helvetica" "then we connected the scenes with shots of helvetica in use around a city" "fin"

shorn_blond.avi (dayo), Friday, 3 September 2010 04:15 (thirteen years ago) link

would have been really fascinating with like a 30 minute run time

office (max) (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 3 September 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

when I was in hs I was taking a class at the local city college and while in the library I remember hearing one guy tell another guy that a good way to make your essays hit the page req while staying in 12 pt font was to switch to arial. for some reason that is basically the only thing I think about when I think about arial.

iatee, Friday, 3 September 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't really get font snobbism

iatee, Friday, 3 September 2010 04:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Wow that "death to Helvetica" guy is a moron. Akzidenz isn't modernist because it was created in 1899? Uh...

wk, Friday, 3 September 2010 07:10 (thirteen years ago) link

o-O at that Gill Sans background - I had no idea!

Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 3 September 2010 08:37 (thirteen years ago) link

the extras on the helvetica dvd (same designers talking but not about a font) are more interesting than the movie

caek, Friday, 3 September 2010 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

liked the movie. not so much as a study of the font, but as an examination of the ideas and personalities of a bunch of designers.

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Friday, 3 September 2010 08:54 (thirteen years ago) link

treeship's post prompted me to change my stylesheet to swisshelvetica and now I feel like I'm losing my mind

dip to dup (rob), Thursday, 16 April 2020 19:33 (four years ago) link

just did the same. the text now has helvetica's protestant solidity but the color scheme reminds me of velvet couches from the 70s filled with bedbugs.

treeship., Thursday, 16 April 2020 20:03 (four years ago) link

one way i used to waste time was changing the fonts on my blog over and over. i think i settled on this one called arimo which was the closest i could get to classic helvetty.

treeship., Thursday, 16 April 2020 20:04 (four years ago) link

Gill Sans 'cause I like my typefaces designed by incestuous zoophiliac sexual abusers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Gill#Controversies)

― ledge,Thursday, January 10, 2008 7:19 AM (twelve years ago) bookmarkflaglink

holy shit. my masters capstone included a blog component and that one was in gill sans. do you think that's why i didn't score the A+?

sadly, yes

update: the headings are still arimo on my blog, but i went with PT Sans for the body. this was a font developed by the russian government that for some reason is a default option on wordpress.

The idea that unkerned Arial has come within 1000 km of a Steidl book cover is causing me distress.

This book is not yet published; one can only hope they'll fix it up before it goes to press.
