>can anyone explain the line from Mr Burns in the Laddy the wonderdog
>episode where he meets Laddy and gravely says "Smithers, I believe
>this dog was in Skull n' Bones"

Skull 'n' Bones is a s00per seKrut society at Yale. They have some sort of s00per seKrut handshake. When Burns shook Laddy's hand, the dog must have performed it.

George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush were both members.

thanks fletrejet that makes perfect sense now, Burns is a Yale man after all

My personal favorite was the one where Bart gets a Big Brother and then to spite Bart, Homer gets a little brother ("I'm not the only one who can abuse a non-profit program!").

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh come now, if it hasn't got Sideshow Bob in it, then it can't be the best one. "Cape Fear" kills me every time. The Gilbert and Sullivan, Bob's attempt to reply to Bart menacingly, the scene with the rakes...oh God, the rakes. Although the episode where Krustee is forced to relocate his TV studio to a trailer somewhere in the desert is classic for the Stingy & Battery Show: "They light! and bite! and light and...[groan of dejection]"

>i havent seen that episode on TV for a long time - why not?

I don't know if you are in the UK or US, but in the US there is a certain system to the syndication of episodes which results in long periods of time where they show only recent (= the last 3-4 seasons') episodes over and over and over. Therefore you hardly ever see older episodes in syndication. I just download episodes from kazaa now to get my Simpson's fix.

fletrejet, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

its pretty random on Sky One in the UK...and the BBC now for that matter. I think the 'softball' episode was shown about ten times last year on either channel but other episodes from that glorious season dont get much of a look-in...havent seen 'Mother Simpson' for ages (but thats good cos i was a bit sick of it)

fletrejet - every time i download an episode from KaZaa i notice bits missing and/or cut out - beware!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

the scene with the rakes...oh God, the rakes.
I loved this episode, but I never NEVER did understand the rakes. Is it an allusion to something else? I always just considered it a way to fill up another 10 seconds.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

it just an example of taking a comedy convention to its logical extreme.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

the big brother one is my earliest recollection of getting a sexual double entendre: "we had some good times, bart; remember the swings?
"i was faking it - higher, dad, higher, wheee! wheee!"

but come on people, homie the clown has the line: "they are airholes - they make the car go faster"

dave k, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 19:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

>fletrejet - every time i download an episode from KaZaa i notice bits missing and/or cut out - beware!

Sadly, in the US the syndicated episodes have bits cut out of them to allow more time for commercials. Most of files on kazaa were capped from US syndication episodes. These cuts can be very stupid sometimes, i.e. leaving in the setup for a joke but cutting out the punchline.

>I loved this episode, but I never NEVER did understand the rakes. Is >it an allusion to something else? I always just considered it a way to fill up another 10 seconds.

The rake scene was always controversial. It wasn't a refernce to anything, the point being that Bob is such a loser, he has to put up with slapstick comedy not only in his role on TV, but in real life as well. Back in the days of alt.tv.simpsons, "rake scene" was a term for a pointless time-filling bit that was likely to be cut in syndication.

Lisa and Bart singing "Theme from Shaft" at the sushi restaurant - a rare moment where sis and bruv are on the same level without it being nasty. Lisa's finest moment? Utterly classic.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes the point of the rakes is that he not only steps on a rake, but is walking amidst a number of rakes which could easily be circumnavigated, making awkward turns to step on each one and then making the key Sideshow Bob disgruntlement-sound ("oooh" doesn't do it justice). The role of the scene within the episode is that it increases the absurd number of physical indignities that Bob has to suffer en route to his revenge.

"Homie the Clown" did have its laffs, but to be considered best Simpsons evah it *has* to have more heart, and in this ep Homer was terribly jerkassed. I can think of 20 better eps, and now I will list them in more or less random order:

You only move twice (CLASSIC if only for the sugar/cream scene, plus Hank Scorpion = best one off character evah)
Selma's Choice (Surly = best one off character evah)
Krusty gets Kancelled (Oh no! Bette Midler!)
Thirty minutes over Tokyo (Wink: "In America, you reward knowledge. In Japan, we punish ignorance." Homer: "Ignor-what?"; Wink: "You will now have to answer one question about Japan." Homer: "Is the answer Japan?" Wink: "Actually, it is.")
And Maggie Makes Three (very moving, AND funny)
Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment
Colonel Homer (Lurlene: "You're as smart as you are handsome!" Homer [angrily]: "Hey! Oh wait, you meant that as a compliment")
Marge vs. the Monorail
Whacking Day (look for Larry White's cameo!)
Duffless (Homer gives up drinking?!?)
Rosebud (yes, the Bobo one)
Cape Feare (Yes, the rake scene, which *was* simply to fill time)
Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadassss Song (one of the few sensitive Bart eps)
Lost Our Lisa (Lisa tries to go to museum by herself)
Trilogy of Error (the Lola Rennt parody, mit Linguo!)
The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace (Homer outdoes Edison)
They Saved Lisa's Brain (with MENSA/Stephen Hawking)
The Front
Lisa The Greek
The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular (my cousin Matt Groening in BOOTLEGGER SHOCKA)
Lisa's Substitute (really, is there any doubt that this ep is the best?)

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

And I purposely left out the Treehouse of Horrors.

Oh hell, here are even more that are better than "Homie the Clown":

Mom and Pop Art (Picasso in his crank period!)
Who Shot Mr. Burns? Part One
Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy
Sideshow Bob Roberts ("He's even better!" "I like the human touch.")
Marge in Chains
Boy-Scoutz N the Hood
The Last Temptation of Homer (Zutroy!)
$pringfield (Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)
Homer's Barbershop Quartet (Homer hands bellhop an awards statuette. Bellhop: "Gee, thanks! Oh wait, it's a Grammy..." [tosses it over balcolny] voice: "Hey, don't throw your trash down here!")
This Little Wiggy
Marge gets a job (Tibor!)
Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes? ("It's drinking the water!" Plus, Homer sperm!)
Brother from the same planet ("Story. Gory. Allegory. Montessori.")
Homer's Triple Bypass
Mr. Plow ("Do you come with the car?")
Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie
A streetcar named Marge
Kamp Krusty
Last exit to Springfield
Dog of Death
Radio Bart (I nearly cried when I first saw this)
Like Father, Like Clown
Bart the Murderer (Bart: "Did you kill my principle?" Fat Tony: "Uh, Chinese guy with a mustache?")
Burns Verkaufen der Kraftwerk ("Advantage: Burns!" and the Land of Chocolate!)
Homer Alone
Three Men and a Comic Book ("Hot enough for ya?")
Bart's Inner Child (Decadent!)
Homer at Bat
Lisa's Wedding
Lemon of Troy ("For it was haunted. Now, drink your turnip juice.")
Bart Sells his Soul (Metaphysics!)
The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons (Manjula is HOTT)
King of the Hill ("Hey, Deng Xiao Ping died.")
The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson
Eight Misbehavin' ("Please, call me Larry.")
Pygmoelian ("Duffman, sez A LOT of things. OH YEAH.")
Hello Gutter, Hello Fadder
Bart to the Future
Behind the Laughter
A Tale of Two Springfields ("Oh yeah? Bart, c'mere a minute!")
HOMR
Skinner's Sense of Snow ("I grow weary of your suggestive dancing. Bring the ranch dressing hose!")
Tales from the Public Domain ("I bagged a little girl! I'm the greatest Scotsman in history!" plus Trojan War and Hamlet!)

Last Tapdance in Springfield ("You are now carrying my child.")
Lisa's Sax
Lisa's Pony
Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington
Lisa the Beauty Queen

"'The Simpsons' must have heart to be good" is the most irritating party line EVER.

But when the mood is nihilistic, the show is simply cruel.

funny thing about the rakes is that when I watched Cape Fear I kept looking for a rake scene, which I assumed they were parodying (say DeNiro/Mitchum steps on one and doesn't flinc). To the best of my recollection, there wasn't one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think "Homie the Clown" is a lot better than most of those episodes (the Thomas Edison one? come on), but "Radio Bart" is indeed a contender.

"Yeah, that Timmy is a real hero!"
"How do you mean, Dad?"
"Well, he fell down a well, and...can't...get out."
"How's that make him a hero?"
"Well it's more than YOU did!"

That's because, thank god, it gets cut during syndication. You've seen it once, that's enough.

The thing about the rampant cynicism in later Simpsons is that while the jokes evoke laughter at first, they don't hold up upon repeated viewings, an important factor considering its syndication. The worst is when the jokes get old as they're being told. After the humor's worn off, all you have left is the maliciousness for the sake of being malicious. A viewer will close him/herself off to avoid identifying closely with the victim and perpetrator. You have the exact opposite when there's warmth in the telling.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Leee is otm. I think that's why I can't really enjoy the Simpsons like I used to. The one where Homer ran the daycare was the worst, because it made him look like he really didn't give a damn about his kids. In the past no matter what stupid or horrible thing Homer did you knew he cared about his family.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Put my vote with Leee and Nicole too. Dysfuctional isn't the same as heartless. Roseanne fell the wayside much the same way too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 02:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

Mmm. Looking back on the first season it's interesting to see not only how straightforward the show was (was there *anything* like the first-real-episode bit where Bart and Homer played catch for about a full minute to the backing of sappy music and some gentle chat ever again in the show?), but how, well, slow. It's a show that seems to have sped up and disengaged at the same time. In that sense it's reflective of its media surroundings, I suppose.

I can't agree with the cruel Simpsons = inferior Simpsons claim and think that even in the past couple of years there've been episodes with great stretches in 'em. (The one where Moe winds up going back to school, for example, generally sucked, but the first five minutes or so where Bart was digging a hole in the back yard and wouldn't explain himself to anyone was mind-bogglingly funny.) Krustee is agreed by one and all, is he not, to be about the funniest thing on two animated legs...yet has there ever been a more degraded character? The Kamp Krustee episode roolz from beginning to end, and is almost gleefully misanthropic.

Apropos of nothing I feel compelled to quote a song that hasn't heretofore been mentioned:

Some folks'll never eat a skunk,
but then again some folk'll...
like Cletus,
the Slack-Jawed Yokel!
