Is there any just punishmenton God's Earth for flatmates who leave their alarm clock beeping all evening while they're out and their room is locked?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 11:45 (sixteen years ago) Permalink

A couple of weeks after I moved into my last flat my friend and I decided to have girlie night in, a bottle of wine, chocolate cake all-men-are-bastards type evening. About midnight all hell broke loose next door, banging, screaming, loads strange thumping noises - it then moved out into the close, there were crashing noises and shouting then suddenly dead quiet. We went to the front door in our night-shirts, put on the chain and peeked out to be confronted with a close covered in broken crockery and burning newspapers and the burred from next door advancing towards us at high speed shouting obscenities. Not the kind of welcome you need in your first flat you've ever lived alone in!
She got worse over the years, threatening physical violence against me for closing my front door too loudly (I think she just couldn't find anything else to complain about) emptying rubbish on my doorstep and pouring beer through my letter box. Weirdo freak, I held out for 5 years, her sort don't scare me, but I'm glad I'm gone and I'll never live in a close again!

my neighbour has been playing INCREDIBLY LOUD music from around 3 am to 5 am every wednesday and thursday morning for the past few weeks now. it's exacerbated by the fact that he only owns an elton john LP and Phyllis Nelson's "Move Closer" single.

It's midnight, and suddenly I hear the muffled but unmistakable sound of the bassline to EMF's "Unbelievable" playing above my head. I hate you, upstairs neighbor! I hate the fact that you apparently don't have a job and never go to bed! How the fuck do you manage to get up and have your kids jumping on my ceiling at five o'clock every morning when I can still hear your TV blaring at one o'clock at night?! I hate your shitty taste in trance music and your fucking TV! I hate the fact that the "reasonable" compromise that we seem to have settled on after five months of cohabitation still leaves me wanting to go upstairs and throw your subwoofer and TV out your window and onto your fucking pickup truck with the fucking car alarm that it took you three months to figure out how to stop from going off every hour, morning, noon, and night! Gah, fuck! I hate the fact that my lease isn't up for another three months! I'm never living under another person's floor again!

Oh, of course he sleeps. I forgot that I can hear him snoring if I stay up long enough. Damn this ceiling!

Our neighbours kept me up 'til 6 AM last night playing the bloody awful Kaiser Chiefs and other random guitar crap as they came down off what must have been a big night o' pills.

I knocked on the door at 3:30 AM and politely asked them to turn it down, which they did...slightly. I know they were smashed and your volume judgement tends goes out the window, but that's not much comfort when you're tossing and turning at 5 AM. We've always tried to be super quiet if we come back late from a club, and that's always at weekends and not on a work night. (we're all 9-5 Mon-Fri types)

So - I just loved facing my last day of work on two hours of sleep. Not all of us have finished for the chrismas break...

But hey, they didn't get a lie in. My boyfriend buzzed their intercom on the way out to work, and I played a nice selection of party hip hop (Edan, Mos Def) before I left. I heard signs of life as I was leaving, ha!

hearing your neighbours peeing - classic/dud? I can't decide, there's a sense of comfort to it but there is also a sense of TMI.

also how do i tell my other neighbor that his girlfriend is way too loud when they are having sex because it wakes me up at night. it's not like, normal sex noises (which i really don't care about) it's high pitched and loud and unnecessary, just for effect or something. aughchhh

lil yawne (harbl), Monday, 13 October 2008 10:36 (ten years ago) Permalink

i used to be able to hear my stinky old neighbour pissing and it truly repulsed me more than anything else about inhabiting a block of flats, even more than his unbearably loud sex noises with equally noisy lady-friends. And that's saying something. He's moved out now though (yay) and i can't hear anything my new neighbour does.

so a small group of kids has taken to throwing parties randomly in the house next to me. it's currently in the final stages of being renovated so, i'm assuming they're just sneaking in around midnight or so, setting up and cranking their music until 4am.

the first time was a friday night and i didn't get too bent out of shape about it.
they were at it again last night starting from about 1am and i was none too impressed. when i called the cops they mentioned there'd already been a bunch of complaints, yet no cops ever bothered showing up.

i managed to pass out on my couch (where it's quieter) around 3:30-45 or so. but i'm trying to formulate a game plan for what to do next time this happens.

each time there's been a car parked out front that belongs to someone in there - i assume whoever brings the system. i'm thinking something in between leaving a note and smashing in the windows might get the point across they are not welcome!

xpost... can't sleep with those things in. besides - the walls were literally shaking at one point last night!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:19 (nine years ago) Permalink

Why dont you find out who owns/is renovating the building and tell them shitty little squatter techno brats are partying in their house every night? Cops might be complacent but there's nothin more righteous than a yuppie property owner with paranoia about land values.

Trayce, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:37 (nine years ago) Permalink

it's happened twice in the last two weeks - so it's not like i can guarantee they'll be there doing their thing on any given day. and i'm assuming the workers must have figured out what's happening - or that something is happening.

i think maybe if they do it on a weekend again and i'm sitting around doing sfa i might just join them (the music was actually REM and Bloc Party and that sort of thing - no techno!), and possibly slash dude's tires on my way in.

I have a good relationship with my neighbours. I don't complain about his scary aggressive demented screaming which may involve domestic violence, and he doesn't complain about us playing techno at any time of day/night as loud as we want.

The neighbour above I've got to know and he has my number so I said if it's ever too loud just text me. He plays music quite loudly in the mornings which could be annoying but it doesn't really bother me.

we live next door to frat bros, they love to rage on the verandah which is next to our bedroom window until 3:30 in the morning on weekends

they are loud, esp. when they are trying to impress their ladyfriends

at first we thought it was kind of hot in a crass, porn sort of way, but now it's just annoying

but we can't complain about noise because we have a studio in our basement and we're always making music/weird sounds at odd hours ourselves

and

then

i cant have too much more of this to put up with, right?

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:25 (eight years ago) Permalink

landlord will have to reduce rent by prob 25% to keep him there, if i reckon right.

cpurse, if i reckon right about the neighbour in question, he supplements the dole by dealing out of the house so prob can afford to pay the extra himself. gah.

i can deal with hium through work, but that would be slow and messy tbh.

At best losing your noisy neighbour is going to be a bit drawn out. At worst it's going to be the trigger that starts off a whole new level of crazy.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Sunday, 24 October 2010 23:31 (eight years ago) Permalink

The moment when the noise nuisance neighbor leaves certainly is a happy one. I remember when we were walking up the street and saw the "to let" sign outside the house next door like it was yesterday. We were so fucking happy.

there is a particularly violent in-law, who when he visits my neighbours they manage to keep him outside the house. But the loud chatter always continues into the early hours - no matter how cold the outdoor conditions are. And they seem powerless to ban him, because he keeps returning and he is abysmal. I'm not a curtain twitching type, but my bedroom window is almost adjacent with their back door because of the hill our house was built on, and this show never seems to end:(

calzino, Monday, 12 February 2018 01:30 (nine months ago) Permalink

My neighbors aren't noisy but they leave a black and white pit mix outside 24/7 that can be. She's also started breaking out from the lack of attention into my backyard or into the front yards and tearing up my trash.

Talking to them has been pointless and it seemingly never happens when I can call animal control, so I've started just throwing the trash in their yard.

moved again since, note taken thus far tonight:

night sun 29th July

door being slammed in what can only be described as intentionally violent manner such that sound carried loudly through to other apartments loudly enough to prevent any chance of sleep.

repeated at intervals of c.5 mins from approx 23.50 through 01.00

i can only surmise intentional and vexatious due to frequency, the regular intervals between and the violence of the slamming (you could literally hear the run-up on each occasion).

unsure whether they were seeking to aggravate or provoke an adjacent neighbour, ourselves or genuinely undergoing a traumatic personal event (no noise of conversation or of any other kind throughout period save for the doors, no signs of others in apt, etc)
