everybody on ilx complains about reddit

Yeah I think that's what bugs me so much about some of these sites, its all people trying so damn hard to create the next huge meme, not understanding that the best ones just sort of happen.

What I mean is like, on some of these site you can almost heard the guys behind them thinking, "right this meme is going to be HUGE" and not, "lol this is funny".

i've only heard of all your base, and the genius part of all your base belongs to original translator, not whatever joker added breakbeats to it.
is "sonic" a similar thing?

When somebody tries too hard to go viral you end up with stuff like those bizarre Quizno's commercials or Snakes on a Plane. I don't know how many huge viral videos out there were made with the specific intent of going viral (maybe "Chocolate Rain"??)

I'm thinking more about image macros though, not really videos. Just like dudes that slap up caption after caption after caption in the hopes that something sticks.

uh those bizarre quiznos commercials were a blatant attempt to license stuff from a video site that had already gone viral, although mostly for other videos on the site (rathergood)

is "sonic" a similar thing?

I'm not sure to what extent this still exists but basically it was some poor guy who wrote this 200 page fanfic about Sonic that was absolutely insane in all the worst ways, like 3rd-grade level writing, but half of it was made up of these bizarre sex scenes, and some of the SA guys did dramatic readings and even made animated videos of some of these excerpts which probably made me laugh harder than anything else on the internet. I have to see if it's still up somewhere.

ohhh... i think i've seen the crazy christian sonic comic. is that the same one?

i'd like to support remix culture but so many of these examples is like "the james brown riff is more important than someone's shitty rapping over it and shitting on it."

i mean if nothing else SA discovered horse_ebooks

I think even gawker or whomever put in some footwork to track down who the author was.

this seems much more an interesting angle on SA than these memes that seem more like "SA noticed something funny and decided to make more fun of it"

hacker news is a community of self-proclaimed entrepreneurs and startup culture stereotypes talking about technology whereas slashdot is mostly inhabited by the basement-dweller stereotype

anyway either you get the internet in which case u understand SA as a terrible place of great power and importance or u dont and u complain that they didnt do enough with horse_ebooks

4 points to defend my reddit usage:

2. interesting sub boards appeared over the years so now i check it pretty much every day. i use it like it has been said upthread , i selected a bunch of sub boards about stuff i am interested in and use it like a news aggregator. so... now i can waste even more time consuming choice informational tidbits about indie gaming, futurist stuff, useless talents, streaming good documentaries, skeptics lols and of course there are also the boards highly moderated for quality control about philosophy, history, social justice etc etc.

3. there is a sub board for my peeps! the québécois. there is only 3000 people subscribed to it but i think that is so cool, it's the first time that i am part of a french speaking online community. we talk about items in the news, politics, pop culture, just ordinary stuff that we have in common and it does good 2 me.

My housemates an SA goon and the way he talks about it, he might as well be talking about ILX, srsly they have the same discussions and everything, it is weird.

I am shocked, **SHOCKED**, to discover that, as part of "everybody on ilx," I have been complaining about reddit. In my sleep, no doubt. It's either that, or I must have become a nobody without my noticing.

frankly i'm kinda amazed that there's so much respect for SA in this thread; in a few years, it'll probably swap places with reddit and whatever horror evolves from reddit in the "man this was bad but not THIS BAD" sweepstakes

Nah SA is pretty self-regulating these days, they instaban anyone who steps out of line re racism/abuse, or done to death memes. I admire that tbh.
