however I do applaud SA's devotion to turning those incomprehensible "Bart the General" Simpsons videos into a legit meme that basically nobody understood (if there was even anything to understand!)
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link
this wasn't exactly a big one but "Sonic in Search for Love" is legitimately one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the internet so there's that
I think they did "All Your Base" and "hopkin green frog", can't remember any other ones off the top of my head
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah I think that's what bugs me so much about some of these sites, its all people trying so damn hard to create the next huge meme, not understanding that the best ones just sort of happen.

the smash mouth eat the eggs thing was pretty classic
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
What I mean is like, on some of these site you can almost heard the guys behind them thinking, "right this meme is going to be HUGE" and not, "lol this is funny".
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link
i've only heard of all your base, and the genius part of all your base belongs to original translator, not whatever joker added breakbeats to it.is "sonic" a similar thing?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link
When somebody tries too hard to go viral you end up with stuff like those bizarre Quizno's commercials or Snakes on a Plane. I don't know how many huge viral videos out there were made with the specific intent of going viral (maybe "Chocolate Rain"??)
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link
chocolate rain seemed pretty sincere to me
― ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link
I'm thinking more about image macros though, not really videos. Just like dudes that slap up caption after caption after caption in the hopes that something sticks.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link
uh those bizarre quiznos commercials were a blatant attempt to license stuff from a video site that had already gone viral, although mostly for other videos on the site (rathergood)
― ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link
is "sonic" a similar thing?
I'm not sure to what extent this still exists but basically it was some poor guy who wrote this 200 page fanfic about Sonic that was absolutely insane in all the worst ways, like 3rd-grade level writing, but half of it was made up of these bizarre sex scenes, and some of the SA guys did dramatic readings and even made animated videos of some of these excerpts which probably made me laugh harder than anything else on the internet. I have to see if it's still up somewhere.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link
ohhh... i think i've seen the crazy christian sonic comic. is that the same one?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:13 (eleven years ago) link
i'd like to support remix culture but so many of these examples is like "the james brown riff is more important than someone's shitty rapping over it and shitting on it."
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:14 (eleven years ago) link
i mean if nothing else SA discovered horse_ebooks

horse_ebooks is pretty cool but did their discovery of it go beyond noticing horse_ebooks was cool?I think even gawker or whomever put in some footwork to track down who the author was.
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:35 (eleven years ago) link
"One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon."this seems much more an interesting angle on SA than these memes that seem more like "SA noticed something funny and decided to make more fun of it"

dunno hacker news - how would you place it relative to slashdot
― barthes simpson, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link
hacker news is a community of self-proclaimed entrepreneurs and startup culture stereotypes talking about technology whereas slashdot is mostly inhabited by the basement-dweller stereotype

anyway either you get the internet in which case u understand SA as a terrible place of great power and importance or u dont and u complain that they didnt do enough with horse_ebooks
― max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 22:06 (eleven years ago) link
if their entire contribution to horse_ebooks was noticing it, then i'm pretty sure boingboing would have got around to it eventually.

4 points to defend my reddit usage:
1. http://www.reddit.com/r/rainbowbar/ 2. interesting sub boards appeared over the years so now i check it pretty much every day. i use it like it has been said upthread , i selected a bunch of sub boards about stuff i am interested in and use it like a news aggregator. so... now i can waste even more time consuming choice informational tidbits about indie gaming, futurist stuff, useless talents, streaming good documentaries, skeptics lols and of course there are also the boards highly moderated for quality control about philosophy, history, social justice etc etc.
3. there is a sub board for my peeps! the québécois. there is only 3000 people subscribed to it but i think that is so cool, it's the first time that i am part of a french speaking online community. we talk about items in the news, politics, pop culture, just ordinary stuff that we have in common and it does good 2 me.

My housemates an SA goon and the way he talks about it, he might as well be talking about ILX, srsly they have the same discussions and everything, it is weird.
One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon.
And he told me about this the other day, this was pretty woah. Appatrntly the last thing the guy posted (or tweeted, IM not sure which) was "oh shit I gotta get out of here they're shooting at us" or something? I mean fuck.

waaaaaaaaaaay upthread but i saw someone mentioned tumblr and its social justice radicals, and that shit is seriously the most insufferable thing. a good friend of mine recently got way into that and has slowly gone off the deep end, with lots of incoherent rambling about "feefees" and how wise some dude named riley is. that site breeds some real nuts
― fadanuf4erybody, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 00:04 (eleven years ago) link
SA however is great except for when it sucks
some dude's name isn't riley fyi

I am shocked, **SHOCKED**, to discover that, as part of "everybody on ilx," I have been complaining about reddit. In my sleep, no doubt. It's either that, or I must have become a nobody without my noticing.
Perplexing, indeed.

All I know about reddit is from the Southern Poverty Law Center:
Reddit: Mens RightsA “subreddit” of the user-generated news site Reddit, this forum describes itself as a “place for people who feel that men are currently being disadvantaged by society.” While it presents itself as a home for men seeking equality, it is notable for the anger it shows toward any program designed to help women. It also trafficks in various conspiracy theories. “Kloo2yoo,” identified as a site moderator, writes that there is “undeniable proof” of an international feminist conspiracy involving the United Nations, the Obama Administration and others, aimed at demonizing men.
OTOH my brother is a huge reddit fan/poster and he says it's easy to avoid that stuff,,,he says to the face of his 'my feminist soapbox' sister (me)

frankly i'm kinda amazed that there's so much respect for SA in this thread; in a few years, it'll probably swap places with reddit and whatever horror evolves from reddit in the "man this was bad but not THIS BAD" sweepstakes
that said SA has definitely produced some funny stuff, but i personally wouldn't put it over 4ch

Nah SA is pretty self-regulating these days, they instaban anyone who steps out of line re racism/abuse, or done to death memes. I admire that tbh.
