everybody on ilx complains about reddit

I started a thread like this a week ago, but no one commented on it. Oh well.

With the spare time I've had to myself since I made that thread and my wife left me, I have this new way of organizing snacks.

I've tried to dig into reddit a couple times (halfheartedly) since my job involves internet & social media but the way comments are threaded I find it super confusing and non-user-friendly

I do (this is really me talking now) browse the pics section for stuff like the border image below or some goofy national georgraphic shit.

But I'm not registered and I avoid the comments. The people who post there and like 89% of the boards are pure (something)awful.

I know a couple somethingawful members, they are actually pretty reasonable these days

yeah SA these days is mostly just a bunch of jaded nerds, they relinquished the whole meme generation/funny photoshop aspect of the site to reddit years ago

and the funniest people on SA have all moved their acts to twitter anyway

it all kind of depends which forum you're on. some of them are full of really helpful and geeky people (such as the music board), who don't mind writing 3,000 words on Muse or whatever if you ask them "what's the best album"? other forums are full of people who try way, way too hard to imitate old front page articles, "wouldn't it be funny if I talked about something mundane but used a lot of fucking profanity!?"

One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon. Pretty influential in their community for the game EVE online. My friend seems to mostly go to that forum and the car one.

Not sure what forum my other friend frequented on there, but she was on SA for a really long time.

speaking of SA today's article is a bit of wonderfully hamfisted self-parody

I hardly post there anymore and didn't really miss it, between the powertripping mods and the dudes who ruin FYAD it's kind of a big nerd ego exercise (like most message boards, really)

yeah i've been on there since high school but the past few years i've only used the games forums pretty much

its still a much better forum than reddit though!

as a bored-at-work programmer I am guilty of reading Hacker News despite harbouring violent thoughts about all the "entrepreneurs" who are going to change the world with their crappy iphone app startups, like, any day now, bro, I've totally read all the free ebooks on how to be the next Zuckerberg

still even the weekly threads about women in tech (inevitable comments: 99% "women don't like computers and aren't very good at them but that's their own choice so they should shut up whining") don't usually make me quite as angry as the Reddit "I am a serial rapist, AMA about my totally awesome life and lack of remorse" thread I fell over this week

(I am not linking this because it was depressing and maddening and I'd guess triggering, but I'm sure you can find it if you really want to hate everyone)

PS I just wrote a youtube comment in a language I am not fluent in, which I'm sure will be grammatically incorrect and make someone go "wtf with these illiterate morans all over youtube" in 3... 2... 1

SA sucks but its produced some of the funniest ppl and greatest memes on the internet so its kind of a wash

nothing's worse than an unfunny dude desperately trying to create the next big meme

however I do applaud SA's devotion to turning those incomprehensible "Bart the General" Simpsons videos into a legit meme that basically nobody understood (if there was even anything to understand!)

Yeah I think that's what bugs me so much about some of these sites, its all people trying so damn hard to create the next huge meme, not understanding that the best ones just sort of happen.

What I mean is like, on some of these site you can almost heard the guys behind them thinking, "right this meme is going to be HUGE" and not, "lol this is funny".

When somebody tries too hard to go viral you end up with stuff like those bizarre Quizno's commercials or Snakes on a Plane. I don't know how many huge viral videos out there were made with the specific intent of going viral (maybe "Chocolate Rain"??)

I'm thinking more about image macros though, not really videos. Just like dudes that slap up caption after caption after caption in the hopes that something sticks.

uh those bizarre quiznos commercials were a blatant attempt to license stuff from a video site that had already gone viral, although mostly for other videos on the site (rathergood)

I'm not sure to what extent this still exists but basically it was some poor guy who wrote this 200 page fanfic about Sonic that was absolutely insane in all the worst ways, like 3rd-grade level writing, but half of it was made up of these bizarre sex scenes, and some of the SA guys did dramatic readings and even made animated videos of some of these excerpts which probably made me laugh harder than anything else on the internet. I have to see if it's still up somewhere.

ohhh... i think i've seen the crazy christian sonic comic. is that the same one?

i'd like to support remix culture but so many of these examples is like "the james brown riff is more important than someone's shitty rapping over it and shitting on it."

i mean if nothing else SA discovered horse_ebooks

I think even gawker or whomever put in some footwork to track down who the author was.

hacker news is a community of self-proclaimed entrepreneurs and startup culture stereotypes talking about technology whereas slashdot is mostly inhabited by the basement-dweller stereotype

phiz on SA isnt that different from ilm, they even talk about whiney constantly

anyway either you get the internet in which case u understand SA as a terrible place of great power and importance or u dont and u complain that they didnt do enough with horse_ebooks

if their entire contribution to horse_ebooks was noticing it, then i'm pretty sure boingboing would have got around to it eventually.
