(The traffic that reddit sends is astounding, btw. We more than doubled our daily average when a link got on reddit, and it wasn't even on the front page, it was buried somewhere with 5 upvotes)

I think there are cooler dudes per capita on metafilter but on average it's about the same as reddit. i'd recommend straightdope over metafilter.

reddit does insane traffic which is why many people have heard of it and talk about it

max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

oh man hacker news, the internet is so awful we should just turn it off

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

there are no good communities on the internet except on ilx and twitter

max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

also tumblr, but not really

max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

i think the way tumblr allows you to like something but doesn't really facilitate shitting on something makes it more positive a force, though facebook has the same dynamic and is super shitty so i dunno what the magic formula is.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:20 (eleven years ago) link

best communities imo are those torrent sites

two weeks ago i was walking across campus w/ a friend and these two fairly fratty looking dudes carrying a heavy wooden palanquin offered us upvotes on reddit to help them carry it

oh god i hate tumblr's discussion style so much

do people have discussions on tumblrs? maybe it keeps things positive by discouraging discussion...

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

tumblr is way fucked up

goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

i had the beginning of an argument from evidence there but fuck it

goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:56 (eleven years ago) link

tumblr is the worst platform ever but i find it fascinating

max, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

between the pro-anas, the nazis and the porn, i think it's safe to say that tumblr is fucked up, is my point

goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

and yes the interface is ?????!?!????!?!????

goole, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

i'd suspect that the tenor of nazi ana porn rhetoric on tumblr is much more light and positive than on reddit.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

but also the otherkin and the social-justice radicals and the hundreds of thousands of anime/k-pop gifs

all three are very into pretty pictures now that i think of it, if that counts as positive

i'm surprised metafilter is still around, i remember reading it like 10 years ago but hadn't heard anything about it since until this thread

it still looks exactly the same too, hah

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

most tumblrs i cant figure out how the hell people comment on them. but there`ll be like 13 thumbs up or hearts or whatever on a post, then like, one person leaving an almost totally content-free comment.

how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

metafilter totally looks ten or twelve years ago. that's another thing about reddit, is that I've gone to the site a couple times and it wasn't visually inviting, so I peaced.

how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:10 (eleven years ago) link

lol u read reddit

buzza, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

yeh cos you can hardly move for gradients and rounded corners here

stet, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link

metafilter still consistently trafficked, I've spotted a few ilxors over there. I think the median age seems older, but there are a lot of known personalities and in-jokes and, yeah, very po-faced these days

reddit's frontpage culture is like a whirlpool of mediocrity sucking in a variety of interests but ends up pandering to a 20 year old white male in college who plays video games, likes cat pictures, and has odd paternalistic or misogynistic views but no self-consciousness about it. I can skim over the front page or two occasionally if I want lots of links but little content, and can go to specific areas that are about topics. Most of the topical areas are total cesspools, but it's a large enough site that some of them get enough traffic to gain popularity.

The image-site mining areas and the people exposing themselves for site cred are kind of the worst

pretty much none of the tumblrs I follow ever have any written content, so I forget that there is this other tumblr where people write stuff.

I started a thread like this a week ago, but no one commented on it. Oh well.

With the spare time I've had to myself since I made that thread and my wife left me, I have this new way of organizing snacks.

I've tried to dig into reddit a couple times (halfheartedly) since my job involves internet & social media but the way comments are threaded I find it super confusing and non-user-friendly

xpost - lol

dmr, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

I do (this is really me talking now) browse the pics section for stuff like the border image below or some goofy national georgraphic shit.

But I'm not registered and I avoid the comments. The people who post there and like 89% of the boards are pure (something)awful.

I know a couple somethingawful members, they are actually pretty reasonable these days

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

yeah SA these days is mostly just a bunch of jaded nerds, they relinquished the whole meme generation/funny photoshop aspect of the site to reddit years ago

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

and the funniest people on SA have all moved their acts to twitter anyway

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:36 (eleven years ago) link

it all kind of depends which forum you're on. some of them are full of really helpful and geeky people (such as the music board), who don't mind writing 3,000 words on Muse or whatever if you ask them "what's the best album"? other forums are full of people who try way, way too hard to imitate old front page articles, "wouldn't it be funny if I talked about something mundane but used a lot of fucking profanity!?"

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:39 (eleven years ago) link

One of the dudes who died in the attack on the US consulate in Libya was a SA goon. Pretty influential in their community for the game EVE online. My friend seems to mostly go to that forum and the car one.

Not sure what forum my other friend frequented on there, but she was on SA for a really long time.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

speaking of SA today's article is a bit of wonderfully hamfisted self-parody

ciderpress, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

(specifically this plan: https://apnews.com/article/google-reddit-ai-partnership-a7f131c7cb4225307134ef21d3c6a708) which IMO just means most people who care will stop using reddit
